So worked on a test model for my Ogre army. I've never really done rusted metal or blood but these new citadel paints make it so easy. I've also not done any skin work before having played Salamanders in 40k. I realise I've missed many a mould line but this was to test ideas than actually use in a game.
I was going to do a blue tinged whiter skin colour but I quite like this way I think.
Starting in October I have to paint 300 points a month (plus an Extra 100 somewhere) for the event at my local GW to have a 1000th army at the end of the year. However I'm kind of tempted to order some other models to work on some stuff not in that list now as painting that was a lot of fun.

So I tried out some grey skin. Very much a wip. Very quick and dirty as the model was originally painted and I just sprayed it and went over it.
So I'm not sure but it's interesting. I think they grey would look good with my plan for iron guts with the copper armour.
Here's a shot of the two together for comparison. Feedback would be appreciated.

Nice work on the splatter, I must say!
If you're looking for a vote, I'd say... Go with a mix of both. You could even have the Ironguts be grayskinned and the Bulls be more human-fleshtoned-ish...? (couldn't think of a good term for that lol). If you keep it to a max of two (or maybe three) different skintones, you can have a good balance of diversity without necessarily losing the unity of the army theme. It could be a way to help the ogres stand out from one another, without the horde looking like a blob of fleshtone and pants-tone that all blurs together.
Granted, I painted all of my ogres' skintones almost completely differently, but that's because my army's theme is more of a "initiation/frat" tribe rather than a familial/clans tribe. So I guess I'm more biased towards diversity

Cheers! Id love to say the splatter was hard work and effort but it's blood for the blood god paint and a stipple brush. It was my first attempt so you really can't go wrong with that stuff.
As far as mixing them goes...I'm undecided but that was the other half's suggestion aswell. Ill maybe have to give mixing them a serious thought.

Updated comparison shot.

Both look really good but if I had to choose I would pick the grey skinned one but that is just my preference and in the end its your choice maybe do both as sazel said that would look cool

Lord Rex24 Sep 2014
I like both as well. I would pick the more caucasian colored one between the two. Thought I don't do it myself I like the idea of diverse ogres as well. It could even be that eah unit is different. I paint my Orc and Goblin units differently because their fluff says a a waaugh is composed of many differerent warbands in a temporary alliance. Same thing could easily be true for an ogre tribe.
Basically though, I think all of your options are good, so just trust your gut - you da tyrant.
aceytrixx25 Sep 2014
Just realised that I haven't done the grey ogres feet in that pic oops...
So that's 1 for flesh 1 for grey and I think everyone for mixing them. I'm finding it hard to decide since I like both but sadly I do know I wouldn't want to do a mix of the two. I'm possibly leaning towards the grey but that's maybe just because I only finished him last night. That said it might be a bit different and make the army stand out.
Any thoughts on the shade of grey?

So this happened today. Ill still need to sort out sabretusks but there's no rush for them. Should be Monday I start getting down to work as I have to go the girlfriends parents this weekend.....
aceytrixx16 Mar 2015
Cheers! Yeah I do feel it was the right way to go. Hopefully I can start updating this again as I'm almost done getting my 40k stuff ready (sadly there's just more events for 40k although that should be changing soon) I can spend some time working on the rest of my Ogres. I far prefer painting them to my necrons that's for sure.
Northvoice16 Mar 2015
I made gray ogres at first. 2 battalion boxes later, characters and basicly every unit avalible for ogres i changed my mind. Starting a gnoblog whenim well under way with repainting.
Ogre record: Win: 15 Loss: 10 Draw: 5 Races played against: Ogre, Dwarves, WoC, Demons, High elves, Skaven, Beastmen, Brittonia, Orcs and Goblins, Empire.

Thanks!
So since work has restarted on these guys as I get them all sprayed up for tomorrow I thought I'd share my current work on progress BSB
So yeah he's basically a hunter but those were the parts I had lying around. I decided I was using the parts from the thundertusk for the banner for a while ago. My idea is that he's planted it in the ground to mark his spot as he fights everyone.
natrapx18 Mar 2015
Looking good! Really like the BSB you have going there. Look forward to seeing it painted.
aceytrixx19 Mar 2015
My concern is ranking him up. Both parts are still blu tac'ed to the base so I'll play around with it tonight and see if I can get it to work in a unit
natrapx19 Mar 2015
Can you swap the human with the meat, might make it easier? Then, assuming you're using it in ironguts, put one with a weapon held above the head behind him, so its as back on the base as possible?
aceytrixx19 Mar 2015
No I've glued that already but it I straighten up the banner itself rather than having it angled helps. Ill figure it out tonight though with my first non triumph and treachery game in round 1 of a local tournament.

Against dwarfs in battle for the pass. Yeah....not so good. What made it into combat did serious damage and had I made any successful charge rolls the turn earlier I think it could have been different. My stonehorn failing two charges in a row really didn't help matters either. Unfortunately the Ironblasters didn't make it past turn two and so did very little and by the time the mournfang made it to combat there was only two of them left. All in all I learned that Ogres really do smash face in combat and that that mission against dwarfs was pretty awful for me. Both guys who work at the store came up and said they felt sorry as that's about the worst matchup I could have got to start off with. Next mission is a modified watchtower so at least there should be more models making it towards the centre for some smashing early on.
natrapx20 Mar 2015
Battle for the pass and dwarves is the worst thing I could think of! Assuming he sat right on the back line with lots of warmachines?
Hope the next games go better!
aceytrixx20 Mar 2015
Yeah that's exactly it! Just had to walk forward into the meat grinder really!
I've had a look at what other armies are being played and it's alot of skaven and dwarfs with some elves it seems. I'm hoping with the centre of the board in the next game being with 500 victory points it'll encourage whoever I'm playing against to move up aswell so I get some action. Also be good to see what mournfang can do since that's been 3 games now I've used them and they never really make it into combat. Ill see how it plays out tomorrow but I may end up replacing a unit with some leadbelchers or something.
Gnoblar_Herder20 Mar 2015
Gun-line battle is a nightmare in this instance, bad luck mate!
On the plus side the hunter looks excellent! Don't worry about ranking him up! Who will he be ranked up with??? only really sabres, so no real problem there! Cant wait to see this guy get some brush-love!
G_H
aceytrixx20 Mar 2015
The reason he will be ranked up is because right now he's my bsb. I may leave him as a hunter and make another model for my bsb and just keep the banner. Was a way of making him stand out from the ironguts he's in really.
aceytrixx21 Mar 2015
So....lost two more. 2nd game against undead if I had rembered to overrun I would have got the 500 extra victory points for being in the centre of the table and that would have given me 100 point victory. Was a fantastic game though managed to deny him 3 magic phases and then popped the Hellheart which killed one model and wounded the other three.
Third game was against skaven with those crazy mini gun rats and they all just tore through my list.
HOWEVER....I won best painted unit for my Ironblaster so I'm happy with that.

Found this picture on my phone. This is how game 3 ended for me
