Scurlocks Squadron

original thread ↗

I got back into Warhammer in in November 2012 with a purchase of the battalion box, since being out of the game for 15 years, progress is slow and it took me until June 2014 to finish the battalion box, I will mainly be battling the Dark Elves, commanded by my brother, so am trying to tailor an army to face them (any suggestions would be appreciated...)

I have finally got around to starting my Gnoblog and have taken pictures of my finished units, next on my list is a Thundertusk, a Iron Blaster and a Giant (because I love the model and think it would be a laugh to use)

Lead Beltchers

Nice work so far Doc, but 2 years to paint a Battalion box? That is some commitment to painting and the signs of a very studious mind!
I am praying it wont take you that long to paint your next run of ogres! Incidentally, what would the next run be?
To use these guys you are going to need some form of lord/ hero. I would suggest Hero as he would be more effective at lower points games and that maybe where you will be pitching in with your ogres. Maybe a Firebelly would suffice?
Also would consider getting an Ironblaster and some Mournfang for the army (maybe Maneaters if you don't fancy Mournfang) and Sabres are a must (and cheap!).

looking forward to seeing some more, though hoping it will be before 2016!  :D

Thanks G_H, the delay is more about the time I have to spend painting rather than the time I actually spend painting,  :P, But I am happy with the results (for a newbie)

I am currently working on a Thundertusk that I got for my birthday (2013...) and then I have a Giant and a Ironblaster waiting to be done (this years birthday present from my bro). I have been fielding a Firebelly and a Sabretusk or 2 (we have loads of old lead models from the 90's which we use as proxies), and plan to get these models once I have finished what I have.

I am building my army more around the models I like rather then what is necessarily good on the battlefield, I love the idea of Skrag the Slaughterer and several Gorgers, but am waiting for them to release the Skrag model in plastic / finecast.

What would you say is better against war machines (Dark Elves Bolt Thrower), a few Sabretusks or a Gorger?

Cheers,

Doc
Finding time for painting is an issue that most people can related to I suspect.

Um, I am fairly sure that Skrag has been available in Finecast for at least 3 years now. It is very unlikely that he will be re-released in plastic once the transition from metal has been made.

I'm am not the worlds best at advising on "what to use to kill X" mainly because I don't really play standard lists as such and tend just to take the stuff I like. If you are asking which would be better to take out this warmachine either a gorger or sabres, then I guess I would say that should you be able to get it there, then the Gorger would be my first choice as I would be using the sabres for something else (corralling troops into a "no where to turn" scenario).
For me though I might be more tempted to either go balls to the wall and charge the Bolt thrower with Mournfang or Maneaters, or just try blowing it off the table with an Ironblaster or some leadies. The advantage to the latter is that, at the end of the day, leadies are still ogres so can still pack a punch when they get up-close and personal with their opponents.

Thanks G

When I asked in store they phoned GW for me and were told the Skrag mold broke when they tried to use it for finecast, and they have no plans to remake it at present, they actually recommended I buy a metal one on Ebay so I guess they won't be making one for some time...

Thanks for your advice, gonna try the gorger as never used one, will still have 2 sabres though, and a Ironblaster for the Hydra :-)

Cheers

Doc
Looks like you can get skrag in finecast

I have never heard this rumour, nor does it make allot of sense.

If GW hold the rights to the Skrag model (which they undoubtedly do) then they could cast a mould from a model and visa versa. It is highly unlikely that they only have one mould. Eventually all moulds wear out and need replacing and I am sure that a company the size of GW have a contingency for this sort of thing.

The idea that a company like GW would admit to "breaking" a mould seem's unlikely as well. I have never heard GW apologize for anything they do and certainly don't seem to announce that they have ever made a mistake.

I am not saying this didn't happen, far from it, but it just seems really odd when you think about it. Anyway, the point is you can just pick up Skrag from any GW store or order it at their on-line store.

G_H
Thanks guys, that is really odd, but that is definitely what they told me, after they couldn't find it on the website on the store computer and phoned "head office", this was about 6 months ago so unless it has been released since then I'm not quite sure what happened.

Never mind, the important thing is the model is available, and I will be getting it once I have painted my Thundertusk, Ironblaster and Giant, so probably next year.... :-)

Cheers guys!

It is definitely available online in fine cast currently, check it out:

I love the Skrag theme but think the model could be a tad better...but that just opens doors for conversions!!!
