Monthly Painting Challenge - September 2014.

Well August is done and dusted... no we are on to the next month. Remember remember the month of September!


Just joining in? The idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or build/convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:

• All Pledges will be frozen after the 10th day of the month. There is no changing of *any* pledge after day 10. Pledges are still accepted after the 10th of the month, but they can not be changed once they are made.
• If you finish your pledge, and you would like to really impress the rest of the Stronghold, you can then go on to add a Bonus pledge. Any additions to your pledge made before the 10th go onto your initial pledge and will not count as a Bonus pledge.
• We need to know The number of Models when you post your pledge. 3, 8, 10, or even 100. Saying "A unit" is not acceptable.
• Extra incentive: I will be awarding to those who complete their pledge. I'll also be awarding an extra to the one pledgee who posts the best photos of their pledge throughout the month!

*Please* post the progression of your work (pictures if at all possible). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the Butchers Cauldron or your Gnoblog.

FAQ
Q: So I can Only do Ogre Kingdoms or GW Minis, for my pledge?
A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like, however this is the Ogre Stronghold, and we are naturally more excited to see Ogre models. If you're working on one of your other Armies or projects, and/or any other Models, please feel free to make a Pledge.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!
A: well.. You have until the 10th day of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There may be small prizes awarded for photographic evidence, but you really only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q: What if I finish my pledge but decide to do more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's not as big of an accomplishment  to make a pledge with 75% of the project painted at the start of the month...  That's not to say that sometimes the last 25% of the project your working on is not more than worth being a pledge of its own..

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?
A. You bet! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

OK, I'm going small again this month as it's back to work and 2 week old baby to deal with! I pledge the following:

1) Base my unit of 9 ironguts
2) Base my bsb and do the freehand banner painting
3) Paint a slaughtermaster

I hereby pledge to paint 12 Skinks, 1 Kroxigor and 1 Skink Chieften BSB (conversion).

I will note that due to the fact I need to decide on a basing scheme these may not (yet) be based.

I didn't finish my last pledge by a longshot. I don't know where the time went. I have 24 ogres that need the last details painted on them. Afterwards, they need to be based and varnished. I also have a few gnoblars that will be used for base decoration. Completing this pledge will make my army ready for the table.

For me this month...
2 Ironguts and a Maneater.
The bonus for me will be War Altar conversion for my Empire.

My tournament is getting closer so gotta pick up pace.

I pledge to assemble and paint 1 Ironblaster as well as a 4 Mournfang Cavalry

Hey everybody,
With Nagash running around and volcanoes blowing up all over the place I figured I better get the boys dressed and start whippin' ass.
Let's get four mournfang DONE using dreadboi's awesome tutorial on the Bellower.

After 4 months of failed challenges I have decided (um, yet again!) to take a different tact.

This month I pledge to do nothing more than finish my BSB. I hate him with a passion (as did most other people on the forum) and he has been living in a sock draw for almost a year...but it is time I did something with him.

I had another go at my skaven test models from last month and it's good enough to get started on full units. So I'm jumping in head first and pledging:

40 Skavenslaves
40 Stormvermin

I might die.

I will try this month to once again finish my gorger.

I will pledge 6 bulls, 6 gnoblar man biters and my gnoblar tyrant, fire belly and butcher

8 Bulls and whatever bonus work I can get done - either converting man-eaters or BSB.

first pledge! woohoo! let's not start too ambitious but feasable.

the plan is to:
- finish painting and basing the hunter
- paint 2 leadbelchers

as a bonus (next in line):
- paint 5 OOP dwarf warriors

Some progress.  Since Ironblasters are fiddly painting it in parts.  Cannon and wheels are finished.  Rest has a lot of base coats and washes etc but nothing exciting.

progress shot of my leadbelchers. I'v been experimenting with ogre skin again. In this shot the skin of the 4 ogres are in different stages. However in the picture it looks very similar. This got me thinking on how much extra effort in painting skin will show in the battlefield....hmmmm.....
Anyway for me it shows when looking the ogres up close so ....more painting!!!......

The 2 leadbelchers on the left are nearing end stage, final highlights on pants and stuff, bases to finalize. The 2 ogres on the right also need their highlights and final rust treatments and bases to finalize. Actuallly these 2 ogres are extra bonas towards my pledge goal this month!

BTW the Hunter is finished. He is drying on his base as we speak. He needs some support while the glue is setting around his pinned foot. Pics will be posted shortly to update you guys on this as well.

Leaces only the OOP dwarfs to paint! Must start quickly on them!

Ogres are looking great Splendor!  Keep it up!

nice going on the IB Zolas! I have one planned (it is glued together) I have the same work breakdown as yours for painting by the looks of it, I'm following your progress in painting closely. Miught make it my pledge for next month!

Looks great. Love all the small detail work you have put in already.

Update on my 8 Bulls. Base coat only with washes, highlights and basing left.

Finished my 2 leadbelchers. snowy bases are done, all details done, quite pleased with these 2. They will fit in nicely with the rest of the unit and brings it to a total of 6 painted belchers. A mighty sight!



My other part of the pledge needs to be fotographed but is also done: The hunter. Will post him later on. Now for those bonus pledge parts, but first something completely different tonight: Mordheim! Of course there is a hired sword Ogre bodyguard in my warband!

Its a busy month but I'll see if I can get a bonus in!

Took some pics of my finished and based Ogre Hunter. What a great model to paint. I had some difficulties with the lion(?) skin on his back though. Just painting it plain yellow made it a bit too bland. The hunter needed to be in earthy colors to my opinion so he can blend into terrain, but also he had to have the "animal" look. I have some sabretusks with yellow skin and black stripes so he had to fit with them. I decided to go for the black stripes on the skin as well, and this breaks it up a bit.

This finishes my pledge and I'm on the bonus painting points

I was wondering how you are going to mask the joints of the red cloths banding the IB together when glueing everything together? Are you painting it/touching it up afterwards and how to prevent gaps there?

Funny thing, one of your first WIP shots made me realise that the IB is based on a door! I just now noticed a hinge and the lock! The model gets better and better and I haven't even started painting it!

Cheers matey!  It will be painting top ups more then likely for the cover up.  If it is really bad maybe some plastic putty and paint over job.  But unlikely I will go that far.  Your quite right it is a door!  Looking at the whole model it really made up of all sorts of "re-purposed" stuff from the old world.  Truly an amazing model.  There's even extra detail behind the wheels which are never seen unless you are not going to bother with the wheels for some reason.

I finished the slave unit last night. I have 40 stormvermin and only four days left so I think it's safe to say I'll be missing my pledge this month.

Still a great jump on the rats! Good looking skaven there....

Alright everyone... 2 days left!!

I managed to complete my pledge for this month 6 ogres and my gnoblar heroes and maneaters(biters) led by my version of greasus picture below:

Sadly a fail for me.  Mostly due to some painters block and my son not wanting to go to bed.  I did get a fair amount done so here's a pic of progress so far.  Just finished the Gnoblar now.  Apologies for the slight blurry pic.

Fail for me (yet again as it goes). On the plus side, I do know where I am going with my BSB now. Nevermind, maybe next month...

Another failure checking in, the slaves are done but these guys are just getting started.

I see a lot of great progress which I don't count as a fail!!
