Yes.
Reason: I cannot come up with a justification for saying no. The damage comes from the War Machine, not a character or any other source. Nothing about the Ironcurse says 'shooting attacks by war machines'. This does lead to a kinda weird side effect of getting a ward save when assaulting a war machine?
That's a good question that you bring up, ER... However, lemme type verbatim what the BRB says (pg.505):
Ironcurse Icon: "The character (and any unit he is with) gain a 6+ ward save against war machine weapons."So, since it specifically says weapons, I'd actually say it does
not apply to the Casket of Souls' spell; spells are differentiated from attacks. Now, if the Casket had a normal missile weapon as part of it, that would be blocked, but the Ironcurse Icon doesn't block against spells.
Also, for ER's second point, in close combat, the war machine's weapon isn't in use, as it is the crew itself fighting in the combat, so I don't think the Ironcurse Icon works in CC, either.
The Icon's just a way of catching cannonballs and mortar shells, not for stopping magic spells or melee attacks.
