Joex's Ogre Tribe - Far Over The... Mountain Cold...

So if you'll pardon the awful LoTR reference in the title, we'll begin, shall we?

I just started up an Ogre army, and thought I'd put a gnoblog up for people to see my work.

The theme I'm going for is an icy mountain one, so most of the army will have sculpted fur, and be painted with pale blue skin tones etc. An example of which can be seen in my WIP shots below

I plan to paint to a 2500 point list (though this list is subject to change due to comments in the army list sub forum where this has been posted) but as it stands, this is what I'm working towards:

Welcome to the stronghold Joe, some really nice work there. I particularly like the rust effect you've managed to capture and those bases will contrast beautifully with the tones of the model. I look forward to seeing the finished article and more of your work.

As for your list, it is a fairly standard looking list - but this is by no means a bad thing! My only observation would be that I'd personally place the bsb in the unit with the SM and standard of discipline to keep your Ld bubble. If you're against that I'd consider getting a champ for the bsb unit so he can go in the 2nd rank. Although he looks a tank on paper, you want to keep him out of (direct) combat if you can to keep him around. Especially if he bumps into any particularly nasty enemy characters.

I love the look of those bases, im very curious to see what things look like once you have a couple of models finished, i think as mentioned the contrast will be excellent.

I love the skine tone, the blue is very subtle but works well.

I have to echo the others here and say that you have some interesting and great looking models going on there. Like others the rusty metal looks great, I am really impressed with the blue highlight on the grey skin; it is not something I would have ever tried and yet it does seem to work. The fur collar looks excellent so I am assuming there is some GS skill tucked away there. Finally the ice bases look really sweet, I shall be keeping an eye out for more of your stuff it looks great so far

The metal work was actually very easy, and I'll happily write up a tutorial if there's ever any interest The basing's a little fiddly though But yeah, if you guys ever want a step by step on anything, feel free to ask!

In hobby news, I've finished the Ogre rider! I included the base, and the half finished mournfang, to give you some idea on the colour combinations. The only thing finished about the MF is the fur, I'm about to wash the skin and highlight it now.

I'm interested in the experiment that didn't work. I am assuming you tried to use this cracked earth stuff to make the banner look more like dragon hide?

I ask because I have tried various ways of using this stuff for something other than it's original purpose with mixed results. I did try using it to make flaky rust metal on the side of a tank. It was a bit hit n miss, I am sure this stuff can be used for something other than just Ethiopian mud...

On the painting front; rider looks really good so far, keep up the good work mate.

Yeah, that's what I went for, but it was hard to get an equally thick layer on the folded surface, so I just chipped off as much as I could when it ended up dodgy. I was hoping I'd end up with more scales from it.

The only uses I've seen so far are; The traditional earthy base; for the ice on my bases; used as the basis for a lava base; and probably my favourite, used on half an empire spearman to show him turning to stone in a diorama with that new(ish) dark elf medusa model...

Another update! Finished off the box of MFC - next purchase on the list for me would be the Batallion, and a Firebelly, and that's my 1000 points finished!

Sooooo, here's the MFC unit as it stands, awaiting another box for when I move up to 2500 points






(The thought behind the tattoo, is that due to living in such a cold and icy condition, fire is considered almost a godsend. Both making a firebelly a very revered ogre, as well as almost worshiping fire as the great maw itself. So with that in mind, I painted up some flames within the great maw...)

There is some really nice work going on here. Not only the innovative washing (or the blue undertone) to the skin but the bases are really crisp and look the business.

Then there is the actual ogres and Mournfang themselves. Both beast and rider are really good and have a clean cold feel to them. If these guys don't serve a Gnoblar then I don't know what does! This work is excellent, please keep it up and keep posting them buddy.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't resist today, and have ended up coming home with an Iron Blaster! Totally not planned... But I'd best get building!

These are painted pretty much how I envisioned doing mine when I start. Especially the blue through the skin which is great to see that it works. I may try and think of a different way to tackle mine now however as mine won't be up to this standard

Don't let me put you off you're idea! Everyone paints to different standards (and always views their own work as less worthy than it is), but everyone's armies is theirs, and it's painted how they want, and that on its own makes them awesome!

I could give you a skin tutorial if you'd like?

Yeah a skin tutorial would be great actually. I plan to pick up a couple "spare" ogres before the challenge properly starts in October since painting skin isn't something I've really done before.

I'll get one sorted soon then Got no ogres left to paint atm, but I'm part way through building an ironblaster, so I'll use the Ogre on there as the tutorial, shouldn't be too long

Nice Painting! I love the Icy bases! A quick note. The Slaughtermaster you've put in your list in your original post is illegal. Fencers Blades + Talisman of Preservation + Dispell Scroll = 105 points. He only has 100 to spend on magic gear.

Cheers that tutorial would be a great help. Between Oct-Dec I'll have 1000points to do for my GW stores event. This switch to fantasy has re energised my interest in the hobby especially the painting side. If I only have 15 models then I had better do a good job of painting them!

That was my logic, with the low model count!

Not much of an update, but everything's built. Well, to the point I want it to be so far, since I'm painting this in quite a few sub assemblies. And the fur's been sculpted. Just gotta get some paint on them!

These look great! i love the bases, very different and striking. Keep it up!

Here, have a quick icy skin tutorial!


Step 1: Undercoat the model. I use a grey car primer, from poundland, but use whatever's always worked for you!




Step 2: Basecoat the model in Rakarth flesh. It takes me two thin coats over the grey. It'll take more over black, and less over white.




Step 3: Wash the model in a 1:1 mix of Guilliman Blue:water (Or Lahmian medium, which gives a slightly better finish), paying close attention to the dips in the skin. Don't let it pool too much either, except in the deepest areas.



Step 4: Take your Rakarth flesh, and thin it down, as always, and paint it carefully back onto the model, covering everywhere that's not a crack, or dip, in the skin that you want shading.


Step 5: Last step! Well, last few steps... You mix Rakarth Flesh with Ceramite (or Praxiti) White, 1:1, and highlight up, quite liberally. Hit the fingers, moobs, face, and raised sections of muscle. Making sure to leave Rakarth Flesh as the main colour.

Then go 1:2 Rakarth Flesh:White, and move closer to the edges, hitting the knuckles, edges of muscles, above the eyes, along the nose, the lips etc.

Finally do 1:3 Rakarth Flesh:White, and hit the very high points, the tip of the nose, the tips of any very pronounced muscles, also any scars, and nipples.

I forgot to take a picture of each stage, but here's what you get after those few highlights! (after taking the picture, I realised the face looked a bit too bright, so I watered down some Rakarth Flesh and washed it over. I also forgot one of his hands! So I've done that since too.) And don't worry about any glossyness you get. That'll go when you spray a protective coat on. Unfortunately the glazes tend to gloss a little if they build up. If you don't clear coat your models, just use a little lahmian medium, or some matte varnish




Hope this was of some help to people! Of course there's more to do on the flesh (red wash on the lips, around the nipples etc. Plus teeth, eyes, hair, and the shrapnel in the skin. But this is just for the blue skin tone!)

Here's a mini showcase so far then! I know the highlighting on the inside of the strap is messy, but the cannon will be covering it anyway. I also included a close-up of his gut plate paint, since he comes from a fire worshiping tribe (and knowing ogres, he'll think that fire on his gut makes the cannon better or something...);

Thanks mate! Sorry for the late reply, but I've been moving down into my Uni Halls in Kingston, London, which is about 300 miles away So I'm all moved in etc, and about ready to start unpacking all my stuff and getting back to it!

How do you do your bases?

Pretty simple actually.

I'll post up a proper tutorial on the next base I do, but the basics are:

Aggrellan Earth - paint it on thick, and in patches. Let it dry for a couple of hours (to make sure it's done cracking, I do it overnight) and you'll have cracked ice. I then paint the ice Lothern Blue, making sure to get it into the cracks, then paint the ice pieces themselves Fenris grey, highlighting up to white. I then use water effects, as that forms a thick layer over the ice. Making it look more... icy...

The rest of the base has mourn mountain snow applied to it, and then that's washed with a watered down glaze  of guillman blue in a 3:1 water:glaze ratio. The drybrush heavily with white.

Edges are done in Fenris grey.

I completely forgot to step by step the bases But I'll do it next time!


So I've been doing a lot of work this week! Painted and based the whole unit of Ogre Bulls, with a converted Firebelly (with removable fire so I can always use him as a Lore of Beasts butcher if I wanted...)
