Transformation of Khadon

I'm thinking of running a beasts slaughtermaster, and I'm looking for input from anyone who has either used transformation of kadon, or had their opponent use it. I've been wondering what to do if I end up with the spell, which is the preferable monster to transform into?

Assuming I cast the spell and turn into a big gribbly of some kind, what model should I use?

I have used it once.  It was awesome.

I had a beasts butcher with it.  I 6 diced transformation and got a great fire dragon out of the deal.  For the model, I just used my carnosaur.  The dragon went stomping all around the field and generally had a good time, before it was dispelled and my butcher got a bolt thrower to the face.

One thing to note: even if you used the bigger cast, it can get dispelled later on the base casting cost of 16.  Still, if they take the time to dispel it, you have caused them to waste a whole magic phase, so it's not a bad thing.

If you get the spell, it depends entirely on who gets it.  If you play like I did with a beasts slaughtermaster and a beasts butcher, if you generate spells for the slaughtermaster first, you can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to get transformation on your butcher.

If you only have the beasts slaughtermaster, I would not suggest taking it.  The problem with transformation is that you lose your caster when you cast the spell.

What theviking said is great advice, read it well. I have only ever taken a beasts SM without backup, so I usually drop transformation for wyssan's instead. If we didn't have the maw tax, I'd double down all day, gimme that mountain chimera to chew threw anything. But, with only the SM I've found transformation to be unreliable. He's geared out to take advantage of Wyssan's/Savage Beast anyway, and that's all you need.

I used to take a lvl 2 beast butcher all the time (love me some wyssan's), and there was one game I got transformation. I had wanted to use it, but at the time when it would've been most effective (right when the unit with the butcher charged into combat), I rolled about a 3 for winds, so it wasn't even worth the try unfortunately.

I would stay away from it on a SM, for reasons given above, but if you do want to go for it, the Chimera is just a murder machine. Use the GW chimera model if you got it (also good for SOM games too), if not, anything relatively as tall on a chariot base will do.

For the models, I use things on the chariot base for the unboosted version, and the BIIIG monster base for the boosted version. Haven't used Beasts with Ogres before, but back when Daemons could take any Lore I loved me some Transformation on a flying Herald. One thing to remember is that the Great Fire Dragon form has a S5 breath weapon, which can be used outside of combat. Elves are not happy campers with that suddenly covering their horde of doom from a side angle.

There are some awesome models being built by companies other than GW. I bought one of those Chimaera's 2 years ago and was awe-struck by its sculpting.

Have you got any models you recommend for the transformation into a Fire Dragon?

However, I feel that the Carmine is a little on the small scale from something that's supposed to be this large...

I had my SM up against the Bloodthirster and he turned into a Mountain Chimera and proceeded to eat him.  Fun times.

When it comes to this spell what base sizes should be used or is it dependant on which monster is used?  I Would love to take beasts just so I can get a dragon and paint that bad boy up!

for the small beasties i have the gw chimera and manticore models and for the big beasties i usually whack on one of my spare stone horns or thunder tusks , but either way anything with chariot base for the small beasties and moster bases for the big beasties , i know one guy who just bought the bases and painted the monster onto it , which looked great it was like having giant cards with different beasts on and he also painted its stat line on there so he didnt have to keep checking as the beasties arent in our army book
