Double Stonehorn

original thread ↗

I have a tourny coming up using SCGT comp and im thinking of taking double stonehorn but it dies mean that I have to go without an iron blaster. Is it worth losing out on the ironblaster.
Ogres, cause whats better than livin in the snow and drinking
What points are you working with? Any comp at all? What would the rest of your list look like? Details!
2600 pts SCGT Comp. Slaughtermaster lvl 4 maw BSB, ironguts, gnoblar trappers, 4 mournfang kitties and leadbelchers
Ogres, cause whats better than livin in the snow and drinking
Cool. So what are your power choices and soft choices exactly?

(assuming)
Banner of D, MF, Ironblaster, third kitty = 4 power choices

Stonehorn x2 = 2 soft choices, totally a comp score of 3, which is low but not a terrible score.
Banner of Disc, MF, maybe ironblaster, soft choice, 2 stonehorn 1 with hunter. What im wondering is should a take a firebelly and 2 rare stonehorns or hunter on stone horn and 1 rare with ironblaster?

I suggest a third option:  Butcher tax, Lore of Beasts on the SM, 2x rare Stonehorns.

Beasts does great things for a cav/monster heavy list (lower casting costs, wildform to help chew through armor, curse to potentially thin down enemy hordes/negate steadfast) and it gives you amber spear to act as a less reliable version of the ironblaster.  Note the synergy between curse and trappers (target will fail all DTs on a 1 or 2).

For the butcher, maybe go dispel scroll + terror mask.  Having 3 units that cause terror should be fun.

On the other hand, bubbleguts makes stonehorn pretty durable.

I think thundertusks are better but stonehorn have their place. Personally I would go the whole hog and go for three stonehorn and lots of mournfang and go for shock and awe!

Some Lore of Death to wreck characters and leadership might be a good choice there too...

EDIT: Actually, just realised it's a comp tourney, and Death is a big no-no there!
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I'll be playing this tourney as well...The ironblaster isn't always necessary in our metagame, that sadi with these comp restriction I'd expect to face a few more monsteres than normal.
If you can fit it in I'd look at running an ironblaster.
Stick the Hunter on the Stonehorn would be my call, primarily for the extra soft choice. The comp pack is rewarding softer armies somewhat.

3 horn list goes moo!  ;)

This is why im taking gruts sickle on slaughter master for an average cast on 4 dice

When is this tourney? I want to hear how two Stonehorns can do in a competitive environment!

looks good, but I recommend at least one magic weapon in there to deal with ethereals.  My advice for the Hunter on the Stonehorn is actually a 5-point magic weapon, the charmed shield, and the Opal Amulet.  Gives you 2 chances to survive warmachine shots, but ensures that your stonehorn won't get hung up on a spirit host (which I've seen :()

Look and the facepalm of your opponent when you deploy those will be great victory on it's own. I hope we'll hear how this tourney went when it's over. :)
I just want to say that English ain't my mother tongue, so it is far from perfect and I can just hope that you guys can understand me. And feel free to point out my spelling errors or major grammatical mistakes :]
You'd be surprised at the damage Triple Stonehorn can achieve against Infantry. Course, you need some serious support too to get rid of chaff and the like....
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I've got a game this weekend using triple stone horns; I'll post up a battle report so we can compare, contrast, and commiserate.
So the tournament was this last weekend. There were 102 participants, one of the largest tournaments in Sweden. And there were an abundance of Ogres and elves that had signed up (11 Ogre-players!). I must admit that I did not have high hopes for my placing in the tournament. But I knew that when I submitted my list.

First match was against one of my mates. We had actually played two practice matches before the tournament (he had won both big) so we knew each other’s lists, and he had high spirits. The one thing I really feared in his list was his two units of Wild riders, the rest was kind of meh. But of course he rolled Pit of shades on his lv 2 Shadow so then I really had to watch out. Luckily for me he placed both wild riders on my left flank where I had a unit of Mournfangs and a Stonehorn. So when it was my turn I just rushed forward with the rest of my army while the right flank marcher away from the wildriders. I actually surprised myself this match how good I managed to maneuver my army. By turn three he had killed one unit of mournfangs and I had killed all his archers and war dancers. So the rest of the match we just danced around each other. Sadly on the last turn one of my Stonehorns missed one of its march-tests and had to take the last wild rider unit to the face and perished.  14-6 to me after comp.

Second match was against a lizardmen player with a cold one buss, Tettoecko, a oldone on flying carpet, a lot of skinks and a small unit of Saurus.
A unit of Ironguts and one Stonehorn had to be sacrificed to “entertain” the coldone bus while the rest of my army ran forward on the other side of the impassable terrain in the middle of the table. My terror wrecked havoc on his skinks. In the end there was a prolonged fight in the middle between my last unit of Ironguts with characters and his cold one bus. My Slaughtermaster took 16 regen saves in a row! But was nearly killed twice when he missed the lore attribute and had to take his wardsave against the wound, and then re-roll the WS because the other tricksters shard. Small win 10-10 and again two of my 3 Stonehorns survived.

Third match against a Vampire counts player. Didn´t get regen or toughness spell so I knew that I could not get the points from his black knight bus. He also had a spirithost and I lacked magical attack (gulp). I actually kept the Great Maw spell since he had a Terrorghist and I had no other way to taking care of it. High light of the game were when my hunter and a unit of Ironguts ran into his horde of ghules (30) and managed to kill them all in one round of combat. In the end he managed to kill most of my army, but one Stonehorn, both my characters and the unit of Ogres survived. Thanks to the comp score I managed to sneak away with a 11-9.

Forth match was against Chaos Dwarves. Must admit that I did not have high hopes. But my Ironguts managed to hold against his Kadaai his turn 2 and I could then flank him with two Stonehorns (epic). Another highlight was when my hunter (the Kadaai had killed his stonehorn) was killed by bowfire from hobgoblins. In the end I actually managed to win a 13-7, but mostly because I got 900pts from scenario and komp.

Fifth game was against warriors of Chaos. I just wanted to conserve my points, but my hunter had other plans and missed one frenzy check which allowed his knight an easy charge into him, the rest were a slaughter, mostly of my Ogres. But both my characters survived and thank to comp I managed to salvage a 6-14.

So 3 wins, one draw and 1 loss. Not so bad. Placed 34 of 102

I will play a triple stonehorn list again the last weekend in September. After that I think it is time for trippel Flampyre phoenix with my high elves
