Ogre Tyrant Osgud Vs. OnG 1500 points! (Advice please!)

original thread ↗

Tyrant Osgud's band of Ogres pushed deeper into the heart of the forces of order. With one of their major cities on the horizon, he could see that this conflict would be over soon. His employers in the Onyx Tower could see the dreams and hope of the forces of Order dashed upon the countryside in a bloody splash.

It was Duke Larik of the Empire who stood up against the blight across their lands. "The spearhead of their forces is nothing more than a gold hungry mass of Ogres", Duke Larik paused and let the sounds echo in the great hall. "If our steel cannot stop them, we must use a higher form of material." Grumblings rose up from the mixed group of generals. The Elves figured he was referring to magic, the Bretonnians thought he meant virtue. It was the red bearded dwarf who bellowed out the correct answer, "Gold". Duke Larik nodded, "These brutes serve only one master, and that is wealth. If we cannot stop them, we must turn them. I will spend every last piece of gold in our Duchy. This will leave me with nothing, but this tide of destruction will do the same. Money might be our only hope to turn the tide of this battle!"

So this week was really interesting! The sides were even (good vs evil campaign I talked about in my last post) and this meant that the other Ogre player and I were split up. I got stuck with the side of "good" which is fine for me, as I haven't gotten to play for them this campaign. Because I have been undefeated this campaign, they chose me to play the #2 game, having me defend the second most valuable territory. If I lose, Evil will be invading a city next week! I got a guy who is also undefeated this league and he is one of the better guys around (from what everyone says)

This is my 4th game or so in WHFB since 5th Edition, so I still don't really know what I'm doing. I always tell my opponents this and let them know to play hard, but be open with me about questions without giving away tactical tricks.

So this week also increased to 1500. I was excited as I finally got to take a BSB!

Firebelly (level 2, Ruby Ring Ruin, Dispel scroll)
Brusier BSB (Enchanted Shield, Sword of Striking)

8 Ogre bulls (FC, Firebelly riding with them, Ironfists)
6 Ironguts (FC, Bruiser riding here)

Mournfang (Music, Standard, Dragonhide banner)
Sabertusk
Sabertusk

Ironblaster

We got the diagonal one (mission 5) and my IB had to stay off the board in reserves. I had to deploy my whole force first, then he had to deploy his.

I kept everything pretty close together, but a flat front. Sabertusks sat on both flanks.

He deployed 70 or so Goblin bowmen. To my surprise, they can take hand weapons, shields, and bows. Something in my Ogre head couldn't wrap my brain around Goblins carrying such a fine set of weapons with them that gave them the same saves as my Ogre Bulls!

On my right side, across from the mournfang, 2 mangler squigs and a unit of night globlin spearmen (with fanatics) waited for me. On the other side of the bowmen block, he had a big block (25?) Black Orcs, with his General in it.

In the back, 2 doom divers would launch goblins at me.

I got turn one, and he said I could bring my Ironblaster on. Question: My opponent said I could bring on a reserve on turn 1, but my 40k brain can't believe this. He's much more experienced than me, so I didn't question this until the car ride home. Can you bring on reserves turn 1? I line up next to his Black Orcs so I can see across the whole battlefield and lined up his Manglers!

Standing on the wooden platform, Gorg chuckled to himself. The stupid greenskins never saw him hiding! Despite the Rhinox's snorts, the Orcs never heard him over their endless war cries. Across the battlefield he could see two big fat Squigs. They were lined up perfectly! He had never seen such creatures before, but knew they must be trouble as they were the biggest things the Greenskins have! The Grey-Green Gnoblar took the cue. He crawled up on the cannon and held a torch to the tiny string hanging from the top. Sparks showed that the fuse took to the flame. As the flame vanished, the cannon fired. The heavy munition traveled over the heads of the Greenskins. The cannon ball arched towards the Mangler, but the massive beast dodged the cannon ball leaving no harm done except for the dusty landscape which now had a pock mark that would last for a generation.

I'm still new to this "Fantasy" thing, so I'm trying to master "The art of the cannon". I completely biffed the shot when I rolled a 10 and blew the whole damn thing. AURG!

The rest of my forces moved into position to deal with the opponents across from them. I moved my Sabertusk up so he was within 7 inches of the Night Goblin Spearmen.... no fanatics? I couldn't believe it!

Despite my failure with the cannon, it's position was perfect. He was out of the charge arc of everything and close enough so he would have to adjust his whole Orc unit to have a chance to stop this thing from just blasting things off the board.

My magic phase was basically shut down. He had a level 4 shaman who was more than a match for my firebelly. I got off one fireball with Ruby Ring of Ruin and did only one wound to one of the manglers.

Orc Turn 1
He move his mangler squigs up towards my Mournfang. I asked him what they did, and it was clear that I can't let these things touch my Mournfang.

He measures and even though I reminded him in my turn, he DID have fanatics and they came out. One killed a sabertusk, the others were spinning in front of my Ogres, and Ironguts.

The Orcs did what they had to do and reform to go for my cannon. Wasted a turn! Excellent!

In magic, I used my dispel scroll to keep the torrent of magic he had at his disposal. I knew that I was outmatched in magic and would need to start smashing the wizard or I was going to be magiced (I know that's not a word) to death.

Shooting was pretty nasty. I believe the figure was 55 shots into my bulls. He inflicted about 7 wounds (poison banner in the unit...)

Ogre turn 2
I didn't know what to do exactly with the Mangler Squigs, so I charged my only Sabertusk left into it and blew it up. Lost my cat, but it was more than worth it.

I charged my bulls into his 70ish Goblins with bows/shields/hand weapons. Overwatch cut them down to only a few bulls and a firebelly. His rolls were great, but with poison, I was really hurting.

My IB moved way back into the corner, only a couple inches, but now the Orcs had to roll 8 to charge. Perfect!

I moved my IG and my Mournfang behind the bulls to avoid the Mangler Squig. I ALMOST considered sending my BSB charging at it, knowing he would die.

Due to my FB being in combat, I could only cast Firecloak and I dumped 6 dice at it. I got a decent roll, but with his level 4, he was able to dispel it.

My IB fired into the Orcs and took out 4. Perfect! Not enough for a panic test, but I was happy with it. I should have fired the shot at the other Mangler Squig...

The Ogers were littered with arrows. Tiny wooden arrows with crude feathers were sticking all over the ground and into their bodies. Each arrow burned the skin of the Ogres on impact. It could have been spider venom, or some hellish creation from the magical realms of Mork. The Ogres weren't going to give up. They were hopelessly outnumbered, but their size gave them confidence to smash these little critters to dust!

The smashing bodies crunched goblins. Their clubs swung wildly, hitting Goblins with ease. Dozens of tiny blades jutted out and most of the goblins ducked behind their small wooden shields. The crude wooden shields deflected the heavy ogre strikes the best they could.

So I'm going to complain here a bit. My opponent was an experienced player, and he got his goblin WS wrong.  He was having me roll 4's to hit, when it clearly should have been 3's. This isn't a big deal, but I feel like a damn fool for not being more of a rules stickler. Ultimately, it's my responsibility, but I didn't expect this at all.

Anyway, he ends up killing all my Ogre Bulls except for the Firebelly. I killed more than he did, but with a BSB/Banner/Ranks and all that other stuff, I break, and fail my reroll. My firebelly never rallies.

OnG Turn 2
With my Mournfang and IG now getting close to the Black Orcs, he couldn't play with my IB anymore, so he swift reforms and moves towards my forces, exposing his back to my IB.

The big Goblin blob fails animosity and is forced to charge. He is within range of my FB, and charges it. I go to roll my "flee" reaction, and the guy says I cannot do that. We end up consulting the rules, and sure enough, a fleeing unit has to flee if charged. My FB gets away and then he tries to move his full charge distance which would put him into combat with my Ironguts. I explain to him that you cannot charge a unit you didn't charge. He disagrees claiming that Animosity says that you have to charge if you can and he could. It's hard to articulate, but there was no physical way to charge my Ironguts while my FB was in the way. We get the owner of the game store to talk him out of it, and that left him with his big blob within a inch of my huge IG unit. How could this go wrong?

He makes another mistake here that I didn't catch until after I left, but the Shaman with the Animosity unit still casted spells even though the animosity result clearly said he can't. This is a huge deal as he got Spider God, Sneaky Stab'n, and Gork Will Fix it off.

His mangler squig chases my IG and Mournfang but was horribly outrun due to the Fanatics blocking the straight line. If I could get them away, the Mangler would be essentially out of play for the whole game.

Ogre turn 3

With his Goblins 1 inch from my IG, I charge. A full strength IG unit with only 1 or 2 wounds, led by my BSB, what could possibly go wrong?

My Mournfang end up in great position. The Black Orcs would have to make a really powerful charge to get me, but I had an easy charge on them. Additionally, The mangler squig was about 25 inches away, making it impossible to catch me!... right?

With my wizard still fleeing, I had no magic.

My IB take a grape shot shot at the Orcs and kill another 4-5, passes panic.

With the Tribes banner in one hand, and a magical sword in the other, Darnaf beckoned the tiny goblin with the banner to combat. Rather than face him like a hero, he fled to the rear, disappearing in a endless wall of goblin bodies. The tiny goblins were faster. Sharpened bits of metal, barely representing weapons, slashed at the Ogres as they raised their weapons. Rusty blades punctured armor and fell 3 full ogres! Darnaf's men answered back with Arching blows. The heavy Ogre weapons barely slowed as they cleaved through Green Flesh. Mists of red and green filled the air.

So yeah... Even without "stand and shoot" the fast little goblins cut me up bad. Their horde formation meant 3 ranks again, leaving me with only 3 models to attack back with, and one was my BSB. My BSB even took 2 wounds! I dealt a fair number of wounds to him, but once again, he told me I needed 4s to hit.

I lose combat, but stick.

OnG Turn 3

Fanatics move to the back of his army, without going through any units.

The mangler squig... This guy here rocked my world. So... He rolls a 16 on the dice and ends up being able to hit my IG who are in combat with his goblins. I had no idea this was possible as I didn't realize you could move him into combat. I don't see anything in the codex that prohibits this. I guess my thinking was that you cannot "move" into combat, but you can charge. If a unit cannot "charge" I didn't think it could move into combat. I think he's right, but I would love to hear what you all think. Anyway, the squig bounces through my unit killing 2 ogres. He also killed like 10 goblins, but it made no real noticeable dent due to the sheer number left. The angle he hit was the side of my IG so he said it works like a bolt thrower and pops out on the opposite end. Fair enough. I accept  this. With the angle he hit them, if you drew a straight line, he would end up going out the rear side of the Goblin Archers and hit the Black Orcs that were about an inch away. He says I'm wrong, so we go with his "In the side, out the other side" rule. The problem is that now he hits my Mournfang killing 2 of them and perhaps wounding another one. Terrible. Once again, he hit the side of my Mournfang, barely cliping the front corner, and he puts the squig right in front of my Mournfang saying that's where he bounces out. This was what I thought it would do to his Goblin/Orc mess, so I didn't even notice he did it. My Mournfang were hurt, and had a Mangler blocking it from the Black Orc unit. What made me mad after I realized all of this, is that he clearly changed the rule when it helped him. The other mistake he made was he was rolling 3D6 for the damage, not the 2d6 in the codex. I don't know if it was a mistake or a cheat, but either way, I felt taken advantage of because I figured he knew what he was doing, and that I was new. So what do you guys think? Does a Mangler pop out of the opposite side of entry (like a bolt thrower) or follow a straight line (like a cannon)? Can a Mangler move into combat? Help a newb out!

His Night Goblins (who had the fanatics in them) start circling around the fanatic mess and are now pretty close to my IG/BSB unit. I don't have much time before all my ogres are dead or fleeing.

Combat goes on and he fails to hurt my BSB, but does kill every IG I have before they can attack. I did 3 wounds, lose combat, but hold due to my second roll.

Ogre Turn 4
I wasn't sure exactly what to do with my Mournfang. He forgot to mention that the Mangler was now "out of control" and I figured he could still aim the thing wherever. With 3D6 movement, My mournfang were going to take another nasty hit from it (as far as I knew) and I had to chance a charge through it into the Black Orcs. To support the charge, I also charged with the IB into the rear of it. I figure that with 2 mournfang with the banner, and my IB, I have a good shot at busting up the Black Orcs.

Well, the Mournfang don't survive the Mangler and the IB makes his charge.

The thundering chariot smashes into the Black Orcs. The shock of the charge caught them off guard. They take careful time to draw their Great Weapons as the crew on the cannon swing away.

I killed 5 Orcs after saves, so I was happy there. The Orcs do 2 wounds back, and this pleases me. I win by 3, rear +2, and charge +1, resulting in 6! He has a banner -1, and 2 ranks for -2, meaning I only win by 3. I was used to the old rules where "Unit strength 5" negates rank bonuses, so I thought I would win by more. He makes his test on a reroll and then reforms. I'm in serious trouble.

At this point we call it. I have a fleeing Firebelly, A wounded BSB, and my IB against a ton of his stuff including the unkillable goblin unit from hell. There's no real way I can turn this around.

The greenskins laugh at the fat bodies broken before them. Such big creatures were so confident, but had no idea about the power or Mork and Gork. Their mean faces were nothing more than pathetic terrain for the armies of Destruction to walk over.
Tyrant Osgud watched from the top of the hill. His firebelly was nothing more than a coward. His Ogres were dead, and his army was dashed upon the rocks. While the death of his men was a set back, he now had only nobody to split an entire Duchy's worth of gold with. Perhaps other than Greasus Goldtooth, he reckoned that he was probably the richest Ogre in existence. He knew that moneys fate however. With a large portion, he would raise a new band of Ogres to once more trample the rolling hillside. Business was business, and booms and crashes happen... even for an Ogre!

I learned much from this game.
1. I need to take more personal responsibility and read rules myself. I cannot rely on others to be honest/knowledgeable with the rules.
2. Mangler squigs are horrible creatures which are the greatest Ogre Bane I have ever seen. They won this game for him without question.
3. Goblins can take 3 weapons, have WS2, and are nothing to take lightly in massive numbers.
4. Ironguts/bulls are not as indestructible as I thought.
5. The magic phase is a bigger deal than I ever thought before. It can turn goblins into Ogre killers.

Well, Sorry for the loss fellas! I dishonor the name Ogre! I'm also sorry as this bat rep probably sounds pretty whiny. I understand that most of this is my fault and I hope to not repeat it!

I'm more disappointed in your opponent for the rules mishaps.  Sure 1 can be chalked up as a forgetful moment but with the run of rules crap that went on no wonder everyone thinks he's a great player.

Ironblaster and Firebelly should have targeted the Manglers right away removing them and then using the Sabretusks to re-direct the Orcs whilst the Mournfang got a flank on the horde.  Mass S3 shooting certainly whittles down Ogres of that there is no doubt but I firmly believe you had the tools to win this battle.

Either way you got new found experience from the game and will play a better game for it next time.

Thank you for the tips Jimmy!

I felt I had the tools as well. I flubbed significantly in this battle as I'm sure you can see.

I think you are 100% correct about targeting the mangler squigs. They may only be 65 points, but they are the biggest threat to Ogres in the whole codex.

Questions for you:
1. Do you think I should have separated the firebelly from the unit and just used him as a "anti-mangler" shooting weapon?
2. Do you think I need to amp up the points to get a slaughter master? I would have to make pretty significant cuts, but I felt very outgunned in the magic realm.
3. Should I drop the Ruby Ring of Ruin and the Dispel Scroll and go directly for a hell heart?
