hi guys ive done some work with gw tecnical paints and im not sure if its way to much for a small model to carry off, i get the feeling that ive fu+++d it up a little. the two boys have had liberal ryzas rust and blood for the blood god applied, the nob has been left plain-so whitch ones look better???

Hi Jonny Just looking at the pix, I think what you have done is just fine. The 2 on the left definitely look more Orky than the Nob on the right.

ive had a little re look at the models that i did, out of the thirty i would say 10 are ok, it would appear that too much blood is a BAD thing on minis. the rust is passable so hopefully they will mix in with some more regular orks-im properly gutted abou this-any one need 20 painted orks?

Hey mate
In general the 2 guys on the left look better than the guy with nothing, but I think its a case of less is more in this case. The rust isn't too bad, but the blood does appear overboard. I can imagine a few guys in the unit this bloody, but the whoie unit might be too much.

J, don't rush to throw them boyz away just yet.
Yes it may be a bit heavy on the rust but just paint that Typhus corrosion over the top of the rust. Not completely over it but mostly over it. It will dumb it down loads and bring them in looking great.
Not to much you can do about the blood but paint it out. Unless it is imperative I try and avoid painting blood on models as to me it always looks odd. If it was a character that specifically needed it them maybe just a hint, but for me less is more with blood.
The first thing to concentrate on is the fact that even with rust and blood the boyz are more orky looking than the nob. So it's definitely the right direction to be going in. I am swearing down that some Typhus on the rust will make them look muddy and oily and ork tastic.
So don't bin them boyz yet!

Kudos to you for attempting something challenging; I generally find that blood is really hard to do well, and thus I tend to stay away from it. I personally like the blood look of the center one, but I see what you mean about it not matching with the Ork without blood. You could try swapping out some bloody boys into other units so you have some bloody orks in each unit (if you don't like the look, don't paint any more, just spread the current ones through the army). This will make it appear more a part of your theme and the bloody ones will stand out, but not seem out of place/over-done compared to the neighboring unit. The same effect is achieved with painting sergeants/heavy weapons a different/brighter color in a space marine army (I did this with my Dark Angels, and having the meltas or heavy bolters red)
Also with the blood/rust on Green Orks: keep your complimentary colors in mind. Red is the complementary color to green, meaning they contrast very well. However, too much of each will look like a Christmas tree, especially when your other colors are added. It has to be used sparingly to really stand out, so usually would be a patch on the model, a small item or something. It actually is a very powerful tool in painting. So, the idea with the blood I think is that if you tone it down a bit, use it a little more sparingly (or spread the models out), this effect could be achieved--and you don't need to repaint or toss a bunch of good models.
I personally do not like the GW technical paints. I prefer the old fashioned way, which forces you to use something sparingly at first until you gain a lot of comfort with the style and learn to make it look the way you want it.

thanks guys, i was loathed to remove them from the house but seemed to have painted myself into a corner. will give thyphus corrrosion a go-cant be any worse. the blood may get away with an over paint will see wht happens. One thing ive found is that ryzas rust MUST be used sparingly. and as for the blood perhaps only on walker sized models and above. will add a couple of pics with corosion work done

went with the typhus corrosion, it has helped in a few cases. some of them were just too far gone. ive made the call to bin them all. sad but i think i will recover-eventualy. so im now minus 20 plus orks into a green tide. heres one that worked out properly. hope u like him

I personally think if you want blood then there is only one product to use and that's the Tamiya Clear Red, mixed with some black ink and it's the most realistic blood that I've ever come across.

Have you tried using GW washes? I have gotten good results with multiple layers of different colored washes over the top of a dull metal color (p3 Pig iron or GW Leadbelcher). Try nuln oil then agrax earth shade over your metal base, then hit the edges with some dull metallic where the rust would naturally chip off as the weapons hits things (corners and edges). That will give the dark oxidized metal look. I have read of people that use some brown and then red washes before hitting the edges. It will give you the look you may be going for without sticking out the same way a rust paint will. It's the optical effect of dimming and tinting for the effect instead of painting on a brighter paint color (rust has lots of red and orange in it, and the receptor cells in your eyes where you are focused are sensitive to red, and thus your eye will pick it out when focused. Remember that painting is as much optical illusion as it is mimicking the actual color something is)

Oh Jonny; you threw them away??? Mate, you should have bunged them into a bag and sent them to me! I would happily have resurrected them and used them for my Orc army. Please don't throw anymore away; if you really can't live with them then let me know and I will re-train and reassign them for service in my O&G army. If you are in need of more boyz for your green tide then PM me as I still have 150+ although they are already painted and ready for battle...but the offer is there.
