Big Jim's Continental Army

After many considerations I have started creating a continental Army.

I wanted to give my ogres a uniformed look, but still be able to field cannons without it being too weird.
Thus "Big Jim's Continental Army" was born.

Then the second problem rose. I have never before used green stuff and needless to say the ogres don't come fitted with red coats.

After some youtube videos and an evening of giving it a go with the green stuff. My first ogre is ready to be painted. Do not mind the color of the trousers, that was from before the continentals.

Finished off my first modeling with green stuff ever, and must admit, I'm pretty satisfied.

From the process though I've found out that I'd better get my hands on some proper sculpting tools, instead of using the backend of my brushes 

You should be pretty satisfied with that! If that is your first green stuff work, it's an incredible achievement!

Dare I say the outfit choice reminds me a little of the soldiers for the East India Company in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (despite the fact that they're nothing alike haha!)

I think it looks really good! Given the fact that it is your first time only adds to how well it came out! I have been starting to play with green stuffing my army and have found some sculpting tools do make them come out smoother and easier (at least for me  ).

Your painting is also very nice!

Somehow green stuffing makes me enjoy painting some more models.

This guy is looking really good. Great Greenstuff work considering it's your first go at it! Well done. The colours are looking sharp and I can't wait to see a unit of these guys built up!

The idea is something I would never have thought of and I respect the guts to just get going with new hobby things when they are rather special.

If you ever need help improving the technical aspects of greenstuff work - youtube has plenty of videos explaining and showing how to model that sticky green pile : )

Two more bulls are now fully converted.

The painting will have to wait though, taking the family on a Holliday tomorrow, for almost to weeks.

This month has been really hectic. First a wonderful vacation with the family followed by absolutely perfect weather for staying outside. 

This means however that the last week has been really busy trying to finish my unit of bulls and my units of guts. I finished my six bulls last night and the guts are almost done green stuffing

I love the idea and the execution on the green stuff work is impressive for a first timer. Looking forward to seeing more conversions, especially Leadbelchers!

Im planning to do my leaddies now.
I've been thinking of giving them sleeveless coats and hats in order for them to stand out.

But maybe I can squeeze in a Firebelly

The hats are real easy.

A round disc of greenstuff and then I put it on the head so it sticks.
Then just fold the three sides up and voila.

Just make sure you tools are non sticky (wet or with vaseline or something similar)
otherwise you end up pulling the hat off again.
ill take some pics of the next hat I'll make for my butcher.

These are looking awesome mate! I really hope you have the patience to do a whole army full of these I am eagerly waiting for whatever you can come up with this theme.

Now it's time for my first character. My slaughtermaster/butcher.

I started by adding the greatcoat using greenstuff.


I desided to make the coat as if there was a gust of wind, which you can see on the back.


Then it was time for the hat. As mentioned earlier I followed three steps.
1) Making a round disc of greenstuff

2) Stuffing the disc on the head. Tugging it down on the sides.

3 Finally folding the three sides up in the shape I prefer.This one is a bit sideways since he is tilting his head.

I'll let this dry until tomorrow and then I will add a feather to the hat because he's an officer.

SM looks great. Those hats really are simple aren't they... I have a tendancy to over think things. Keep up the good work!

I really think so too. But I still on the other hand wanted to show off their muscles to illustrate the weight of the cannons and therefore opted for sleeveless coats.

I finished basing my slaughtermaster and then undercoated the whole thing with armypainters ogreflesh spray.

Waiting for the glue to dry on the basing, I finished painting my two cats, which I will bring pictures of soon.




It looks like I'm gonna make this months pledge with time to spare, unlike last month where it was literally only hours to spare.

It looks a bit glossy, but I think it's the strong light. It doesn't when you look at it normally.

I am really impressed with your models.  The theme is great, the basing looks varied, and the hats are fantastic.

If I had a way to add those hats to my ogres and still match my theme, I definitely would.

I decided early on not to do the hats on the gnoblarsand just keep the colors, but now you mention it, I could probably do one for the slaughtermaster.

No, I don't like the models glossy and therefore always use antishine afterwards. I think this only is because they are so close to the light, because they don't seem glossy when you are holding them.

I finally succeeded in finishing my Slughtermaster and thereby also my pledge for august.

As Havoc suggested I tried giving the globular a hat as well. I must admit I quite like it.

Nice work there Big Jim, these guys are looking really good. I am liking the butcher he really looks the business. All the work you have done on the uniforms is really good and I bet as a whole this army looks really striking.

Have you got them onto the table much for a few games?

Those coats and are really looking great indeed.  It's like that belong to the model and are not an added extra.  You have some cracking skills with the Green stuff and should be proud.  Keep up the good work!

To answer G_H's question. No there haven't been time to do any games with these guys.
However I'm meeting my regular foe thursday next week.

He's fielding Dark Elves and expecting me to bring my usual Dwarfs. But he's in for a surprise 

I'll make sure to post a battle report. I'm really looking forward to this since the Dark Elves are a really pain to play against.

My next modeling work Zolas should be my Ironblaster and my Mournfangs, although I need to acquire two more of those.
