Will the real Ironguts please stand up?

original thread ↗

So Ironguts?

Ironguts are the more "elite" Ogre Bulls of the army. They have access to better weapons and armour than the average bull. Ironguts are selected by a tribe's Tyrant, and are normally the closest friends of the Tyrant or members of his immediate family, they are also renowned for eating things that other Ogres would not, hence the name of Ironguts.

From Wikihammergoogle search. New book also lists them as essentially ogre bulls that got loot.

I've always seen the guts fluff wise as more the Tyrants bodyguard, elite bruisers to be and general main kick ass unit. Our elites they should be. Always wanted there to be a rule, option etc to have 0-1 Tyrants Ironguts that are the same as normal but some options and buffs - WS4 for starters and possibly other weapon choices.

Don't know why it didn't hit me earlier but we actually do have this option already - they just named them Maneaters of course. Now it's a megashame they are core (How godly would that be!) but for the points differentce the benefits a GW Hvy Armour Maneater has over an Irongut is vast. Heck - Ahw will do for 5 Str5 attacks. That also with the 2 skill choices - Stubborn Guts? etc

While I love my guts for what they do - man do I love our maneaters!

TL:DR - shame guts are bulls with loot. WooHoo Maneaters!

There is such a jump between WS3 and WS4 in the game that this sort of thing would never happen for Ogres.  They do get increased LD which is kind of a major deal.  Plus having a core unit that is both monstrous infantry and carrying great weapons is a pretty amazing thing, honestly.  Lizardmen are the only other army that gets anything like that in core and they have to surround them with skinks to count as core.  Either option is pretty damn rare as a core unit choice, honestly.

Oh I know- Just dreaming. Not of course balanced.

WS4 Ironguts would be no more/less balanced than Daemons with cannons.  Yep, I said it.  :)

Honestly, it's the GW that turn me off Ironguts (and the point cost, of course ).  I just hate ASL, even when compared with I2
You want a cool option?  Give Ironguts the choice between Great Weapons and Ironfists.  I'd love me some 4+/6++ Ogre core.

Wouldn't we all.....

If we just had one Ogre unit with options for GWs, IFs, Heavy Armour, etc, and have "Ironguts" be an upgrade to the unit like Dwarf Longbeards, that would be awesome. I know that would shorten out core to just two units without new additions, but the options for wiggle room with the points would be nice.

It's just unfair that daemons get a chariot-mounted move-and-fire cannon. What cheese!
Actually, most folks are cool with ironblasters now (or at least 1 of them).  No, the cheese comes from the 3+/5++ built-in save.
The demon cannon actually bothers me less.  So much can happen to it on the Reign of Comedy table and its shots are flaming, which is usually a drawback.

If I can only get these Ironblaster cannons to fit my giants hands... Giant Leadbelchers FTW!

Just like there's Golfags Maneaters, why not have a Tyrants Ironguts? It the benefit could be something mild, but useful, like one irongut in the unit could be designated his bodyguard ala TK, Or the standard bearer can take a banner without a point restriction, or -1 modifier to fear tests.
Or if a Tyrant is your General, then Ironguts are +1 WS... *sigh*

You mean like this?

Ogre Achievements: 36/101

New Ogre Record: 2/7/0
Most Recent: 2000 vs. Dwarfs Solid Win.
Or these guys (minus the Ironblaster mount)

Or the guy at the bottom (attached)

That Daemon table is insane. Had a Daemon vs. Daemon match the other day. Slaanesh seems determined to blow up something at least every match's turn 1. And we both lost a full 28 man squad each to double 6 - my opponent's roll was from the snake eyes result in the magic phase too...

Ah wells. I wouldn't mind WS4 Ironguts, as the difference it makes is astonishing, it really is. But then we might lose them in Core, which I wouldn't be keen on.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I have the Forgeworld giants but, yes! :D
