2,400pt ETC comp Ogre List.

original thread ↗

Hello Guys, I have played ogres for a few years now, usually with my #flyrant list, however I am currently looked at changing this up. I will be playing at the ETC this august, so thought I would post my list for opinions.

For completeness, a link to the comp: http://warhammer.org.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=122264

The list:

Bruiser (General) - Talisman of Preservation, Great Weapon. 161

Bruiser (Battle Standard Bearer) - Armour of Destiny, Great Weapon, Look out Gnobler. 196

Firebelly (Level 2 fire) - Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring of Ruin, Great Weapon - 214

8 Iron Guts - Full command, Banner of Dicipline. 389

3 Ogres - Champion, Iron Fists. 106

3 Ogres - Champion, Iron Fists. 106

2 Mournfang Cavalry - Heavy Armour, Iron Fists. 140

7 Maneaters (Scout, Stubborn) - Full Command, Gleaming Pennant, 2xGreat Weapon (musician&standard) 2x Additional Handweapon (both on unit guys). 407

5 Maneaters (Sniper, Poison) - Musician, 5x Brace of Ogre Pistols. 320

Sabretusk - 21

Ironblaster - 170

Ironblaster - 170

Total - 2400

Hopefully a list capable of holding it's own. Main things I am not 100% on at the moment, is whether to take the hellheart or not. as a list, I much prefer it as is; however the addition of the hellheart allows my list to be used to 'bully the match-ups' a little more

Hope you all like !

Hi Marcus, your list looks interesting and can probably do well depending on the matchup.  Is this a team event where you try to get your best pairing or an all-comer ETC list?

The reason I ask is that I just played a team event over the weekend in CT.  It was a bunch of fun even though my team got pummelled.   :P

I didn't have any MF in my list and had SM, Butcher with Hellheart, Guts, Maneaters  Leadies, STusks, and a Blaster.  I can post the list if you want to see it.  Wasn't the best list by a longshot.  Lesson learned, don't change the list last minute before submitting.

You wouldn't believe the number of Elf lists that were there.  At least half of the 64 were Elf.  Woodies were pretty prevalent.  By the way, the True Flight Arrow will be the bane of our existence.  No penalty, BS 4, 30 inch range shots are bad news even if they are wounding us on 5's.  I struggled against the highly mobile, shooty lists.  Just wanted to bring it up to make sure you were ready for that if it happens.  My next list is going to be Mournfang heavy.  I think I'll be able to corral the mobile Elf lists and force them to a corner with the good mobility and the extra footprint of the MF.
This is a draft for using at the actual ETC, so yes, 8 man team style play. I wrote this pre-wood elf book. I must admit, the mass-shot woody army scares me, as does quite a few dark elf builds, but I'm pretty happy with the high elf match-up. I took the hit of no lords to allow the double iron blaster, to allow me to play warriors better than otherwise, although, obviously cannons are always pretty useful. The other list I am currently considering is far more lead-belcher heavy to try shoot down those damn pesky elves ;)

Sounds great.  Good luck at the event.

I am fairly new to Ogres.  How the heck do you get close enough to the darn Woodies to shoot them with Leadies?  They kept staying right at 30 inches and pinging me with arrows.  The Leadies were their primary target and really didn't last long enough to have a significant effect.  Any suggestions?

Thanks
I like this list almost as much as I like you

Main comments:

I think the hell heart is a 1+ for the bullying of match ups. With just one level 2, the hell heart will pressure magic heavy armies to avoid you. I don't have alot of experience in team events, just been to 2 8 man tourneys. The first one i didnt take the hell heart, but i did in the second one and our team came third despite being capped in game one. Having said that our captain was an absolute legend so that helped in match ups.

Like the firebelly will keep the elves on their toes (i miss it in my list)

Do you prefer the LO gnoblar on the SB over having one on both units? Also why not add the AHW on the Maneater Captain since he will will be in the front rank (or do you plan on running them 5 wide?). if he dies (character sniping) for instance, the loss of the LO gnoblar will be felt i would think...

Im a fan of banner of swiftness and swiftstride on maneaters, but i do really like how 7  scouting will put pressure on your opponent early.

How do you think the list does in the ogre match up? I'd happily play you
Using the Ogres as darts with champions at the front?

Ogre Battles!

Tactica: Sabretusks
Tactica: Gnoblars
Ibisson - leadbelchers can move and fire, so have an effective 30" range too, and every dead shooter counts. Plus, it lets the expensive combat stuff get across the board whole.

Cheers Donal - on the BSB with lookout gnoblers, I'm not 100% yet. My current thinking is that should the iron guts become a non-viable block (purple sun/wood elf shooting ... I'm looking at you!) at least he can take it with him, and saving 5 points compared to gnoblers on both makes me happy !

On hell heart ... I'm really not sold. My issue is, ruby ring really does improve my magic phase quite a bit. And scroll = dependable. And I'm not sure I want to take something purely for matchups :/

Scouty Scouty maneaters; champ doesn't have an AHW because points where really tight. I did have 1 on him and 1 on unit, however swapped it to unit, as I'm usually 5-6 wide, and he dies easy. I'm currently strongly considering dropping him all together for a single pistol and AHW.

I'd be up for playing ogres, I'm not going to be able to be match-up protected, and so this, for me, is reletivly all comers ... You got any plans on this weekend ?

Jimmy -  I only really conga the bulls to charge frenzied things and force an over-run, or if I'm short I space, champion is there for hit allocation, to minimize those heart breaking panic tests :p

Cheers for the responses guys. Will be posting 2 alternative lists this evening for perusal.

Elf character assassination for the ogre dart! It's really funny when you kill a mage despite the champion being killed by 15 white lion attacks (or in non-ETC, hellebron in a unit of witchelves with the cauldron)

Going by 6 nations, I think i was the only one to not take the hellheart and have since converted over, though I obviously run the runemaw which helps protect against some less fun spells.

look forward to your alternative lists. i think im pretty set on my list now (what i took to 6 nations with some small twists), didn't rate the single firebelly hugely at 6 nations as i like the overkill that 5 MF gives to my list :)

Sorry for the delay. List #2

Slaughter master. Level 4 heavens. Great weapon, armour of destiny, sceptre of stability, crown of command. 385

1 sabre tusk. 21

This list has no way near the same armour/monster bashing abilities. However is far more suited to the elf meta. This kind of list is quite far from my usual style though, so opinions are crucial.

I'm not sure if I would be better served by dropping the 2 units of leadbelchers for sniper/poison maneaters, to pick up left over wounds on mages from hell heart hopfully.

Hi Marcus,
This list does look like it would do well against elves.

Just out of curiosity, why did you go with a Champion for the Leadies and not take a Muso?  It's an interesting choice and I am hoping I can learn something.
I am simply a great fan of units of 3 monsterous infantry with champions. The advantage of sharing around hits on tough 4 models is big, more so with leadbelchers in a prolonged shooting war. The musician would be worthwhile in there for flexibility, but to save points I am putting  more pressure on myself to play a turn in advance and be able to do everything by wheeling (which I'm sure will bite me at least once over the weekend).

Here is another list, very similar to first, but basically sacrificing a cannon to upgrade bruiser general to the all important #flyrant! Then standard of discipline becomes swiftness and I get 2 extra additional hand weapons on maneaters.

Tyrant (General) - Great weapon,  Heavy armour. Talisman of Preservation, Arabian carpet, charmed shield. 327

Bruiser (Battle Standard Bearer) - Armour of Destiny, Great Weapon, Look out Gnobler. 196

Firebelly (Level 2 fire) - Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring of Ruin, Great Weapon - 214

8 Iron Guts - Full command, Banner of Swiftness 389

3 Ogres - Champion, Iron Fists. 106

3 Ogres - Champion, Iron Fists. 106

2 Mournfang Cavalry - Heavy Armour, Iron Fists. 140

7 Maneaters (Scout, Stubborn) - Full Command, Gleaming Pennant, 2xGreat Weapon (musician&standard) 2x 4x Additional Handweapon (1 on champ, 3xunit guys). 411

5 Maneaters (Sniper, Poison) - Musician, 5x Brace of Ogre Pistols. 320

Sabretusk - 21

Ironblaster - 170

Total - 2400

LOVE THE FLYRANT (though i think this list struggles with the elves with all the shooting).

I found one cannon in ETC works pretty well given the hills and impassable rules, your cannon has a decent shot at killing more than one cannon
With the speed in the flyrant list, I haven't been shot up too bad in practice games. I am charging with most things turn 2. And with a mere 8 deployment drops I will hopefully be getting the first turn more often than not. Biggest loss to bowlines is a 9-11 against wood elves.

List is submitted now, it's a tweaked version of the most recent. Will post it later :)

It's an interesting list and at ETC I think the best feature of it is that it is not standard, so people will have to re-evaluate their approach.

Let's hope to meet at the tables again like last year, but then more points in favour of the Netherlands

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol
