Orc boys AHW or C&S?

original thread ↗

Really quick question, I have a whole bunch of Orc boyz to put together and I don't really know if I should build them with Additional Hand Weapons or Choppas and Shields.

I know this should depend on what they will be used for, so they are just going to be a unit of Orcs not big un's and more use as cannon fodder.

Advice?

Regular orc boys more likely to be a tarpit, anvil unit that a kill unit and the AHW gives you say, maybe 5 more attacks unless hording. Probably fill their role a little better (if anvil etc) with shields Although non Orc player here ;)

Just wondered, is there much of a difference in points cost?

Matt
Ogre-Matt; not really TBH. An orc boy costs 6 points and all the upgrades cost a point. There really isn't allot of difference between the Orc units, I think it all depends on what you want them to do.

In this instance I think I am going to go with Choppas and shields as this unit of orcs will just be a tar-pit throw them to the wolves kind of unit. I intend to also have Orc archers and possibly some spears n shields if the army gets that big.

The hard hitting infantry in my army will all be savage orcs, but I didn't want to leave out some more sophisticated (?  :| !!?) orc units too, mainly for aesthetic variety. I just thought that they should be built with at least half a chance of staying alive 'til turn 2.

I have about 40+ orc boys to build but half of them are already sporting a shield. I just wondered if the weapon and shield option was still worth doing or if the two hand weapons would be a better option. It really doesn't make too much difference as I do want the savage orc part of this army to take care of business.

hows about you pop the shields on there back, then u have all options coverd, so the unit can be choses as what u desire

heres a link to my more random models and paint projects, my ogre army can be found by following the other gnoblog link.
Unless you are going to horde them, give them shields.  Hording basic boys is not very useful, though it might become more interesting as an option with more elven armies seeing play.

Personally, I would be building Orc archers more than anything else.  They cost barely more than basic boys, fight almost as well, and have the option for applying ranged pressure to clear chaff out.  I am somewhat surprised they are not seen in orc armies more often, actually.

The costing barely more bit could be the case. People write off BS shooting a lot if you're not Elves too.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
Thanks for all the advice. Firstly i didn't intend to horde them.

I didn't intend to horde them, but as i built them all with a hand weapon and shield i suddenly realized that i now have a unit of nearly 40 of them...so that blew that plan out the water!

I have (hopefully) some Orc archers on the way as i intend to have a unit of them in the army. It is worth mentioning at this point that, though i never intend to do it from the outset, eventually every army i start always ends up being a grand army because i can't help myself.

The idea for this build was to have allot of Savage Orcs with a handful of orcs boys and board boyz thrown in. I have allot of night goblins to add in as well as the obligatory warmachines and Mangler squigs.

As it is stands at present i have 120 Night goblins, 10 squig hoppers, 50+ orc boyz (and rising), Orc arrow boyz, 40+ savage orc boyz, Savage Orc boar boyz, 10 black orcs, a troll (random), 20 forest goblin spider riderz and an arachnorock. Oh, and SO shamen, big bosses etc....

Damn i built them up quick! Maybe time to look at my life and have a little word with myself!
