!500 vs Wood Elves: What worked and what didnt

original thread ↗

Hey Guys...
Played 3 games vs new wood elves at weekend and asked him for a hard list vs my all corners.
I did win 2-1 but some luck was needed. Same list for first 2 games, then we both said we could change a few parts for final game.

Slaughtermaster ( maw )
Lv4 Fencers and Dispel Scroll

This beast came to all 3 games and even though I had some bad magic at times, like no trollguts when I needed it, he only died once and he was the last man swinging his blades.
What I didn't like of maw was lack of missile fire for his broken fast cav riders.
Also range of spells. Most of the time my army was spread out.
Yet without trollguts, those volleys of arrows would really mess up the day.

Bruiser BSB
Crown of Command, DragonHelm, HA ( 2 games )
Sword of striking, Enchanted Shield, Talisman of End, HA ( last game )

Needed in every game. The change in last game to more attack and no crown was a better build I found. I used Stubborn spell on unit every turn. This helped me chain magic better and freed 35 points on this guy.

Ironguts 9 ( all games )

Did well to be fair. Half unit made it to combat in first 2 games. But the damage of his shooting showed in the final game. Round 1 no ward saves this unit was down 6 guts, even though it was my biggest win.

Mournfang 2 units of 2 ( all games )
HA,IF

Would I take again..... Damn right I would! Units of 2 was the key running flank using cover. Split his shooting up. First 2 games he set his sights on these first. Did ok as other units made it like my turbo kitties ( man of the match haha ). In the third game he didn't fire as hard on them due to the damage and carnage my guts did. Bad mistake!! I rolled to long chargers with both units rolling 5 0r 6 for impact hits. Game over haha.

Maneaters 4 ( 2 games )
2 XHW, Standard, HA, Gleam Pen, Bellower, Scout Stubborn.

Idea was to put pressure on army but never did so dropped for last game. All they did was move his vanguard fast cav, then they dropped these to easy!! I love my maneaters but by far the worsted unit I used in this match up.

Sabretusks 2

Well what can I say. Game one, 1 ran down 2 units of archers!!! 21 points of hell haha.
Second game. He dealt with this first ( did there job again no arrows to unit )
Third game. Both ended the game and a fine run out
Would I take again. I think I will take 3 haha.

Last Game Changes.

Maneaters Dropped. Change to BSB
In, Gorger and Scrap launcher

Gorger came on turn 2 and raised hell from his back line. I would add to list.
Scrap Launcher. Tried this for first time and I thought Ironblaster would suffer for targets. Never again. Hit nothing in all shooting but did well as a expensive chariot.

This weekend is 3 games of 2000 all corners. So chip in guys if you can..
Im thinking of Firebelly, Leadbeltchers and some Gnoblar shields. Remember its all corners.
Did your opponent bring any Waywatchers?  If so, what did you do to avoid losing all of your mournfang to their anti-armor shots?

I've been trying to beat wood elves with my lizard army, but will definitely be trying with ogres sometime soon.  Using lizards, I've found that their poison shots tend to rip apart monsters (and will take down either of our chariots).  Ogres won't have to fear trueflight arrows, but I imagine that waywatchers are still going to be a pain when taking mournfang.

I note that you didn't bring much in the way of shooting.  Since wood elves have the rather unfortunate tendency to break with one or two units left that decide not to let you get the victory points, I imagine that a small unit or two of leadbelchers, or giving your maneaters some pistols would help clean that up.
I to play Lizardmen and started Ogres as my new army. Im newish to Ogres but my builds is all for smash and grab and chose to stay away from shooting just for my play style. He did play those Waywatchers and to be fair they were a pain in my side for three games.

He scouted them for first 2 games but not the third. They did most of the wounds to MFC with that ignore army save. All I did was used some cover and hoped one MFC stayed and used sabre to block and strip him of his stand and shoot. Like I said I rolled well for charges and one MFC with 3 impact his hurts them. After all there only Elves once you get into combat and combat res was all I was going for. Getting there was the hard part.

I also stripped them a little using Bonecrusher and made sure I was getting that 4+ regen when I could. But honestly, those fast cav riders are so broken. Glass, but hit very hard for points.

Im adding my firebelly for the 2000 and I love my maneaters with brace so im thinking of giving them a second chance but I will not be scouting them. Also we have some good items to help that you my include in all corners list like greedy fist. I run this in bigger games on my Slaughtermaster so that big bad tree man wont have any wizard levels after I smash him with a Bonecrusher hahah.

I will post full lists after this weekend and try and do a little battle rep. Im really doing this to find where my list is weak.
Looking forward to the weekends battle reports.   Thanks for the info on the 1500 point games.  I don't think that the way watchers are that bad to be honest.  You can really decide where you want them to deploy by putting your MFC down, I'd suggest hugging a flank eliminating them from getting flanked both sides and sticking a unit next to the MFC capable of shooting (Maneaters/fire belly/leadbelchers) and this kind of forces the opponents hand.  Focus on the MFC and face a round of shooting to possibly cripple the unit, or focus on removing the ogre support unit, if they choose this then ram the MFC down their throat.  Of course make the wood elves player job much more difficult with toothcracker onto the MFC to make the way watchers wounding on 6's, or troll guts/wildform/iceshard/curse/midnight, lots of options.  Of course way watchers are extremely vulnerable to magic missiles so chances are the augment spells will go through as your opponent saves dice to stop that 2d6 fireball from cooking his elves.  Hope some of that helps.

So it was. Damn missed that one. Thanks for that.
Like I said I was new to Ogre Kingdoms. Ironblaster it is then.
I still like the fist for +1S and ward save. Allows you go to fencers blades for 6 attacks str6 Tyrant WS10 and still points for armour. The strip levels is a bonus extra to me really.
