LB, MFC and Meaters

original thread ↗

After reading drunken Aussies post Regarding MFC and Meaters I am just trying to get a basis of when you guys can field all three units (LB, MFC and Meaters) without jeopardising the rest of the army by skimping on model count or gimping your characters.

Sadly I usually play 1500 point games so it's very hard for me to fit all three units in a list, so does anyone regularly field all three units (if so at what points?) or just pick two units and stick with it?
This is partially a mathematical question.

If you had say 8 leadies + Thunderfist 354pts
                      4 Mournfang + Crusher, standard, + HA 280pts
6 Maneaters + Heavy Armour and additional weapons 336pts

Then that would be a total of roughly 970pts. So the minimal number of points to play this lot would have to be 2000. That's a very rough guide because you wouldn't have the units set up like that (or with as many people in each unit).
As special is a max of 50% it would mean you would have to be looking at 2000+ pts for the whole army.

...and yes I have had all three in a list before...in fact I had them ^ I just copied that off an old list I used when I first started playing Ogres.

It really boils down to your play style and what jobs your army need to do.  Example would be do you want leadbelchers to remove chaff or weaken/kill big core units?  The next most important question should be do I need this unit in the army?

Basically if you want all 3 units in your army all 3 should should have a role that they fill.  If you find that 2 units are doing the same job do you need both?

Personally I like the idea of all 3 units and would love to get all of them in at some point.  It is certainly on my to do list!  :D

I have used all 3 in a 2500 list before.  I think I am leaning toward more ME and less MF at the moment.  I am currently using 2 x 4 Leadies with Bellowers and I am not sure if I like them or not.  I have 5 more games lined up in a tourney next weekend which will help me decide if I want to keep them in my list or not.

I am finally getting some games in with my Ogres, think I am at about 20+ games at the moment.  Still a long way to go to understand the intracacies.  I do love the playstyle though. :)
When I've fielded all three specials, it's usually something like this:

4 MFC, HA, IF, mus, std, Dragonhide - 350pts

3 Mannies, All AHW, mus, Stubborn/Swiftstride/Scout (some combo) - 166...? don't have my book atm lol

(1-2)x4 Leadies, mus - 182 each, so 182-364pts

...Mostly because I don't have enough Maneater models atm, but also because I use them as a side harassment and not so much as a major threat. I have more models ready for them, but I haven't put the work into assembling/painting them yet :P

I find them all to be rather effective. I like 4-packs of Leadies, because I feel like they have enough firepower without being complete overkill; plus, I tend to roll around average for their shots usually, and they can clear out most chaff or shrink some of the T3 hordes if needed, which I find is a great use for them. The MFC are just a plain given, for their T3-shredding abilities, plus their ability to get around the field at a good pace. The Mannies are just so diverse in their tool-kit that you can make them do practically anything you want and they'll be good at it.

For the 1500pt level, you can either drop a Leadbelcher or the DHide banner from the MFC, and you can field all three of the units that I listed above. Personally though, at less than 2k, it's better just to pick two of the three and make them better, rather than spreading yourself thin on all three units.
33 Gnobs! Over 3 Packs of Trappers! Woot!

New book WLD: 20/10/2 - Yay tourney wins and random game win!

well they each have their own role and must be tailered as such.

leadies are vs big blocks, chaff etc. their shots per point is quite high when compared to a mannie. If you want to deal with lots of little guys then more leadies. I don't like leadies myself and prefer other options.

mannies are elite killers whose range fire is very good at making the enemy react to you. sniper + poison is gold for keeping their wiz away or sheltered behind cover. Harder to cast Psun at you. Even if they don't have sniper just the pistols is like a reverse impact hit if the enemy charge you. 8 shots = about 4 hits. wont save you but may remove a rank bonus.

MFC punch things in the face. T3 things especially. otherwise they are useless.

Roc, your math is correct, but bereft of tactical considerations

yep that sums how i play =)
As everyone has stated it all comes down to play style and what is in the rest of the list.  No wrong or right answers, just differences.  :)

At 2400 I often field all 3 units. 4 LB's for chaff clearance and after that shoot anything with a pulse. MFC do what they do usually in a unit of 4 and 4-6 ME's depending on the role I wish them to fulfill. It's quite do-able but at 1500 points I doubt it's possible to have all 3 units in the army and remain somewhat effective.
