Right guys. How do you build your slaughtermaster.
I'm using
Fencers Blades, Glittering Scales, Dispel Scroll ( LOTGM )
Gruts Sickle, Armour of Destiny ( beasts )
Let the builds begin!

Lately, I have been using a SM (I normally opt for the Tyrant when playing Ogres) and I have been toting the Tricksters Helm, Talisman of Preservation, and a Great Weapon. He has been pretty descent in fights, especially backed by his heavens spells.

For my current setup my Beastmaster is as follows:
Ironfist
Armour of Destiny
Earthing Rod
Sword of Striking
Backed up by the Lore of Beasts he's fairly adept at removing rank and file models, I've gone the ward to ensure he doesn't go away to easily and the Earthing Rod because it allows me to not cascade. This build maybe changing shortly however.

This is my personal favorite, regardless of what lore I run. With Beasts this guy can easily become a rock-hard blender, and with Maw he becomes almost unkillable.
I did the math here awhile ago, and I believe this combo actually turned out to be the most overall survivable build available.

I like the classic build: Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales, Greedy Fist for LotGM. It is survivable enough that your lore attribute can keep you alive, and it nearly has the combat output of a Tyrant, along with stripping magic levels and occasionally destroying a magic weapon.
One variation is: In a list with only 2 casters, you can swap out the Glittering Scales for a Dispel Scroll without much ill effect (allowing the other caster to carry the Hellheart).
Another variation I've tried recently is: Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales, Dispel Scroll, Other Trickster's Shard. This list had a single other caster (Firebelly with Hellheart), and I expected to face lots of ward saves from WoC, DE, HE, and DoC. In the meta where I play (Southeast US), I think the Other Trickster's Shard is the new and improved Flaming Banner. Lists have shifted to lots of strong ward saves; and unlike Flaming Attacks, the OTS can't be stopped by 5 pt magic items.
I only would take a 4++ on my SM if I was not running LotGM. In such cases, I might equip with a GW, Gruts Sickle, and Armor of Destiny. Or I might use one of the Fencer's Blades builds above.

Replace the Earthing Rod with CoC and there'a my build. If I get sucked into the void, oh we'll. it's much more likely that I'll lose combat with all the Jugger hordes and Beast of Nurgle spamming I've run into. This build is all about the Savage Beast spell, getting that off on him and my other characters turns a fight into a bloodbath.

I ran mine as my lord.
I give him:
- stubborn crown
- 4+ ward save hvy armour
- cheap magic weapon
- lvl 3 if points are tight
- death magic
- sit him with +1 ld iron gut unit and bsb
I have tried combat SMs but they generally were run down in combat. I also realised he lives in a S6 unit so any contribution he made to damage was tiny over all. So now I see him as a support character that makes sure the unit fights to the end. I do give him a cheap magic weapon as theres nothing worse than a super block being held up by an emo ghost for a couple of turns.
Nothing is better than when a mate beats the unit by 1 million CR and you say "stuborn ld10 with a reroll..."
Roc, your math is correct, but bereft of tactical considerations
yep that sums how i play =)

I am impressed by the Stubborn Ld 10 with re-roll when that unit would be LD9 =P I assume that's what you meant there, unless you know something we don't!
I've gone for Great Weapon more often these days. Fed up with that piddly S4.
Usually, on top of that, he's packing a 5+ ward, Crown of Command, and Dispel Scroll. Though if I trial Heavens I might need a better ward since he won't be able to heal himself.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?

If you are doing the bat utility SM with LOTGM, then having Armor of Destiny, Sword of Antiheroes, Dragonbane, and OTS is a pretty good damage absorber combo for taking most murderous characters out of a fight.
