Hey Everyone,

So recently a buddy of mine, you all may know him as Conogre, has convinced me of getting back into War hammer. I have always been a 40k painter on the basis that a lot of my friends were when I was younger, however I personally dislike futuristic things and prefer the fluff of the fantasy genre. This makes Warhammer Fantasy perfect for me. I painted Spacemarines when I was very young, and Necrons when I was around the age of maybe 13. The last army I picked up for 40k was the Space Orkz race, and I've been in love with those green bastards ever since. Finally when I decided to switch to Fantasy I chose the Orcs and Goblins as my race>

With this information I know I am posting under the OGRE stronghold, but Orcs are sort of like Ogres, and the forum dedicated to my army had a terrible graphical layout and I felt more at home here.

Anywho I plan on posting updates of my progression and eventually doing some painting tutorials oh my particular style if anyone cares to learn the ways of a Warboss as a break away from those of a Tyrant.

Looking forward to meeting all of you and sharing with you my Horde to be.

I'm watching you Conogre! Waaaagh indeed!

Welcome aboard mate, if it helps at all I am also commencing an O&G build so we will be in this together. I am sure Conogre has instructed you to start a Gnoblog to log your progress and there are heaps of other stuff that will be useful to you on here I am sure.
Welcome to the stronghold!

Thanks Herder and Jock'o, I appreciate the support and I aim to bring out some updates ASAP. Since I am getting back into painting I'm starting out painting a set of black orcs but I aim to use these models to practice my old techniques as well as learn a bit of wetblending! Wish me luck!

SW
Decided to buy a box of Black Orcs. Loved the models since I laid eyes on them a few years back. And I figured I'd need a new codex if I were to ever lead a Waaagh! against you Ogre players!
Assembled and ready to base and basecoat.
Based. I like to base my models in a basic way before I basecoat them. To do this I use a healthy amount of clear school glue and gently drop rocks onto the base. i then use my finger to make sure the rocks arent hanging off of the edge of the top of the base. After that is done I apply a layer of ink to the rocks to seal them in place before I base coat using a flat matter black.
I did my first layer of Warboss green to my Black Orcs. I wish these guys showed a little more skin, its going to be difficult to apply washes etc to the skin.
Here's what they look like after I'm done with the skin. I do have a few finishing touches with the skin but because nothing else is painted I wait until the rest of the model is painted before i complete the skin.

Generally I like having brighter skin on my orcs but since these are black orcs I want them to follow the lore.
Skin looks great, you should post your steps for creating greenskin. Im sure some members would be very interested.

+1 to that Conogre, I have been painting orks (and orcs actually) for years and am always interested in how others achieve their skin effect. Especially as a) green skin seems to be so varied and more over b) the human eye can see more shades of green than any other colour.

G_H
I'll be happy to post up how I do my skin In a tutorial I will make after finishing this box of black orcs. I do have different techniques depending on which greenskin unit I am painting. for black orcs I want their skin to be washed out. For regular orcs I want it to be brighter and more vivid (cell shaded almost) and then for goblins I have yet to paint but according to the fluff in the books they are supposed to have the lightest skin of them all.

Tutorial coming soon!
Here is the basecoat of my orc armor! I used a drybrush of boltgun, and then a second drybrush of mithril to achieve this effect. It is not the final armor look for my orcs, I like to add much more detail.

I end up using the technique of mass production because if I ever expect to field a whole army of orcs I will need to paint them in groups. I like doing skin, then metal, then wood, then leather, after that I was the model in its entirety and apply highlights after. Once I'm done the process to get the basic look of the model I then add colour and insignias and fine details to make the model my own. These guys dont look like much now but progress is a slow process!
Last night I base coated all of the metal, wood, leather, and bone. Today I plan on doing the medium details of all of the above while starting the basecoats of the flag and all of the other fine details of the model. If I can get lucky I will finish tonight. and hopefully be able to present all of you with a completely finished and based model that is ready to play.

Here is one of the boys thus far!
Looking good and welcome aboard.

Liking this alot! I too have just started an all Gobbo army so will put some pics up soon.
Lookin' nice so far! I'd love to see where this will be going, keep it up!
In these next two picture, I've painted a few small details, added a wash, and some basic highlights. The yellow is the base coat for the army colour that I'm using. I have yet to paint the cloth on these models but it will come out to be orange with yellow highlights. The models I have already progressed past the models you are viewing in this thread but I figured Id keep you all updated. I still have bone peices and some extra washing to do. Of course other small details like gold teeth and the base have yet to be completed also.
These orcs though!!!! Looking great man keep up the good work. Can't wait to kill all of them on the battlefield :)

Looking good so far dude; intrigued by the colour scheme, that is one bright yellow! Will this be a theme that runs through the army or just the Black Orc unit?

G_H
Previously I've seen some evil suns boys that used a very vivid yellow on orc units to make them look very good. The overall look on these boys was cellshaded, cartoony, and bright, and I really like how they looked. But I'm used to painting orks with a dark metal theme and muddy undertones, so I decided that I would continue what Im used to with these black orcs. Initially the yellow was to be brighter, but yellow is literally the hardest colour to work with in the world, especially on top of boltgun metal. In the picture below I did a few touch ups and this was to be my finished model.
The above photo was going to be my completed black orc look, however when I met up with conogre earlier this week he gave me some advice to make the model look a little more brighter. Lore wise I liked my look, and I liked my look if you were to take my model up close and inspect it, however the model when placed on a tabletop just looked lack luster. Because black orcs have almost no skin showing, It was hard for me to make them pop out. These next 4 photos are what I will have as my fully completed orcs. I do plan on adding a few more scratches and nicks to their armor as well. The difference between the photo aboce and the four below is a few metal highlights, some skin highlights, as well as the addition of gold teeth, basing, and highlights to the orange cloth.

Ultimately I like the hints of yellow, they turned out subtly and add a little bit more colour to my army. The main colour and banner choice I will have in my army is "Blazing Orange", however I like the bits of yellow, and havent fully decided if I want those bits on Black orcs only or not.

In the future though, I plan to have my orcs with much brighter skin, and I know exactly what technique I'm going to use to accomplish that. With Black orcs though their skin is said to be darker, so I'm going to keep it that way.
Last but not least here is a view of each face of my black orcs.
Those highlights help a bunch, looks top notch!

Well I'm pretty lucky in the fact that I work a night shift (11hrs) and its a pretty light job in terms of responsibilities, so it allows me to paint my army at a relatively fast rate. My next guys are in the making right now!
Paint me jealous about the job.  I have two jobs and 4 kids so I'm lucky to squeeze out 15 minutes a day when it comes to painting!!

I am pretty lucky regarding the free time I have/had. Literally as I posted that last post I received an email letting me know that my free time here while at work will be reduced. Unfortunately what this means is that painting large groups of individual units, AKA Orc Boys and their respective squadrons will be hard. I will be able to paint individual units like heroes or siege weapons while I'm at work as I only have the one model to focus on.

Currently I have a box of 19 Orc Boys on the go as well as a box of an Orc Warboss + Big Boss. The boys are assembled and based and basecoated but because there are 19 of them they will take some time. I may spend my free time before work assembling the Warboss and the Big boss for my next shift to paint. Or I may just bring a few boys per day.

Because my Orc skin was requested in a tutorial version, I plan on showing you how I choose to paint my regular Orc common soldier skin, and then I will do a second tutorial showing how I do Black Orc skin. I may choose to combine the two in order to condense the posts.

After these two sets are complete I may try my hand at goblins and do a different skin tutorial for them as they are supposed to be the lightest skinned according to lore in the codex.

looking forward to my next post, although it may be some time. Thanks for the support thus far!
Lets see some pictures! I know you have made progress :) Im sure your loyal viewers are aching for some news

Oh and can you post up the USA war boss we ran into at kobolds? I figure it would make more sense to be posted here.

As stated in my above post, I am currently working on a warboss set (with boar rider and standard bearer) as well as a set of 19 boys. In this post I will show you the progress. For my boys I have undercoated them all in black as well as based them and highlighted areas where I want my skin to be present. On some of them I have even base coated areas that I was to be either wood or clothing leather. I still have strap leather and metal to do as base coats, but once those are done My first set of drybrushing shouldnt take too long. This is the stage of the painting process I kind of get discouraged (because there are so many guys, and they all look terrible at this point) My apologies for taking so long but once I get past the base coat stage I will make sure to be updating more regularly.

My Warboss's are based and sprayed black. Because these guys are hero units I want to spend a little more time on them so I havent glued on the heads.
ConOgre and I went to our favourite shop; Kobold's Corner in Kanata this weekend and while there ran into another player who likes to do conversions. This one theme he chose for his Ork's related to Americans.

He said that Orks love to fight and brag about battles and than stereo-typically he felt some Americans do this when discussing World War 2, thus came to light his idea for Ameri-Orks.

Here are a few pictures I took of a model of his. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
Hey guys, sorry for the absence. Work has been iffy with a few days where I haven't been able to work on my horde, and a few day where I could. Because of the inconsistency I decided to skip updating for awhile and just blitz through those 19 orc boyz. It was tough because boyz have more colour than black orcs and there were double the amount of them to do, but I did it in approximately double the time. Tonight before I go to work I plan on posting up one picture of my just washed boyz, and a few of them totally complete. Right now I just need to add some grass to the bases and they will be done.

Hope you guys are excited >:D
I am...so get on with it!  :D

Here are a few basic guys after I applied my ink.
Here are a few of the guys finished. I thought the pictures were better when I took them but on the 3rd picture especially I dont think its a great representation. I also need to add eyes to these guys. I totally forgot about adding them!

Lastly any advice on their leather? I based, highlighted, and then inked for the leather but it is pretty dull compared to the metal and the skin they have, so I'm not sure if it suits the art style.

I do plan on adding weathering to the brass I put on the bruisers helmet as well as the shield ornaments I placed on some of my Boyz
Lastly here are all of my boys so far.

I have 10 Black Orcs
and 19 Orc boyz.

I like this picture the best because it isn't super zoomed in and I believe thats how warhammer look the best.
The boyz are tabletop ready but there are a few other small details that I want to practice with and potentially try on both the regular troops and the black orcs. These guys will remain like this for awhile to come though so you wont see an update on these guys anytime soon.

As for the second picture here is what to come!

Tomorrow when I wake up I have 5 boar boyz and a black orc big boss coming to the GW near me, so I'll have even more models to paint. I may save my orc warboss on boar to paint with the rest of my boar boyz.

Let me know what you think I should get as my next models after this:
he options included are:
-spear chukkas
-rock lobbas
-orc battle force
-more black orcs or boyz
I like how the black orcs make the boys look like goblins. So massive.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Contrast the yellow wash i used on the black orcs and the brass wash I used on the regular orc champion. Which colour scheme do you guys think look best on orc helmets? I may use the yellow as a distinguishing factor for black orcs, but I am unsure.
I think they are looking great so far. I am not sure what to say about the washes as the contrast between the two is not so stark that it stands out enough to make a massive difference.
Brass works well for the boyz, cheap and nasty.

I haven't decided which unit to vote for yet, as you could do with all of them. You will undoubtedly need more (and more and more and more) boyz.

G_H
So, In this post I have my inked Orc Boss, who needs highlighting and detail work as well as what i plan to be working on next. The Black Orc Boss and some boar riders.
Here is the finished Black Orc Boss, did some experimenting with blood effects. In this photo he isnt properly based, and I did a bit more detailing to his shoulders after these were taken.
Here are my two bro's, that will be leading my army. The Black Orc will be my standard model to use, however I know I need a BSB so I will use the regular boss accordingly. Also not super happy with his flag, I need to think of a way to give it more personality.
With the poll that I had, I decided to splurge. I have a lot to work on coming up and I will be going on vacation soon so I wont have much time to work on it, But I plan on having 1000 pnts up and running before university starts again. I decided since I had 5 Boar boys coming in, and because I need more orc infantry overall, I might as well get the Battlebox. This allows me to paint 10 Boar boys in unison, and will make the job go a little bit faster, and finish off my boar boy brigade. I also picked up 3 goblin spear chukkas in the meantime. These spear chukkas will probably be my next project after the boars because they are relatively easy to paint in comparison to the boar boyz, they also require a significant less amount of detail work. Lastly I plan to rip into the 15 Orc boyz that the battle box gives me. I will finish the rest of the box after they are done. I am also receiving 6-7 choppa boyz from a friend that isnt playing anymore, they are mostly bare so I will add them to the boys that come in the box.

My army thus far:

1 Black Orc Boss
1 Orc Boss
10 Black Orcs
19 Orc Boys

In Progress

1 Orc Boss on Boar
10 Boar Boys
22 Orc Boys
3 Goblin Spear Chukkas

The rest of the box I will worry about later. I know I want to paint all the models but I am unsure if I would actually use them in an army.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to do an O&G with an emphasis on the ORC list, please give me tips, Ideas, and strategies!

It is important to note that I do plan on having TONS of Black Orcs. I want that to be the main theme in my army, but if there are any units that synergize well with them, please let me know!
Bump.

Anyone with any O&G experience in regards to black orcs??

~ConOgre

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Only painting them sadly. As they are a "special" unit I would imagine that having "loads of them" is the equivalent to saying; "I building an army based on Maneaters and I am going to have loads of them".

As you are allowed 50% of your army on specials it would be possible to have an army made up of 50% special units and 50% core, but it is not that likely that anyone will do this. Cost is the first problem (both to the pocket and points-wise); for every unit of 10 Black Orcs you have that will cost 120pts (with no upgrades). Obviously you wont actually have a unit of 10 in an army based on them so, at 2500pts you would have roughly 100 black orcs (give or take upgrades and the oddments).

Whilst this sounds like a pretty good idea, it has limitations as to what Black Orcs can actually do, and who they would be best pitched against.

the same principal could work with Ogres and Maneaters. If you wanted a 2500pt army made up of 50% Maneaters you would have roughly 25 Maneaters (actually less because you would want some upgrades there). But who is going to field an army with 25 Maneaters and a couple of other units? The reason is that as good as Maneaters are they can't take on everything that another army could throw at them.

I don't think that actually answers your question.

It would be easy to build some fluff around a Black Orc army, and you could convert lots of other models into Black Orc versions...but that wouldn't quite work simply because the make-up of a Black Orc stat doesn't relate to what you would have (what I am saying is; you could have a unit of Black orc boar boys but they wouldn't have the Black Orc stat line. Same could be said for Chariots, rock lobbers, doom divers etc)

This type of conversion works more favourably for core units ie Night Goblin doom diver or Night Goblin spider riderz, but becomes more complicated when you try and use a "special" as a core unit.

To relate this to ogres; you couldn't really have a unit of Gorger Ironguts because they aren't really the same thing.

So; fluff-wise it would work fine. model-wise it could be done. Practically you will have to spend a small fortune on 100 Black Orcs and you probably wont win as many games as you think you might, plus it's a bit limiting.

Having said that, it would be one sweet looking army (as would an ogre army made up of Maneaters) but it wouldn't be practicle.

Actually something else has just occurred to me: you wouldn't have black Orc boar boys etc because they are all specials, so you would be giving up; Orc boar boyz, savage orc boar boyz, orc boar chariots, goblin wolf chariots, goblin spear chukka's, night gobo squig hoppers, night gobo squig herds, snotlings and trolls. Just so you could have a 50% Black Orc army.

Same with Ogres, give up leadies, kitties, yhetees, gorgers & Mournfang so you could have a Maneater army...just think about how that would work.

Enough from me.

G_H
well said GH well said.

I for one will never give up my precious mournfang. As much as I love Maneaters.

This is why I am going to do a unit of 6 Maneaters. 1 Of which will be golgfag himself. This will give me a nice looking block to be the centre of my mercenary list, while not committing all my points to it.

Im sure you'll have no trouble finding a place for al your black orcs.

i have helped a mate designing lists for O&G a lot.
He typically runs the green dwarf gunline version with doom divers, rocklobbers and savages. One of the units that he typically ran though was 20-35 Black Orcs. These guys were designed as a catch all unit that could do whatever job required doing.
If you are focussing on Black Orcs as a theme then I feel big unit of 30+ is required. Due to their low Inititative and relatively poor Armour Save they often end up dying quite quickly so you need to ensure there is enough of them left to get the job done.
I would also be taking a closer look at the psecial character Grimgor as he can give a boost to a units Weapon Skill and this is huge as these guys suddenly output a lot more hurt.

In short I feel Black Orcs suffer similar to our Thundertusk. They are expensive becasue they can do a little of everything, but the book has more points efficient options for doing each individual role.
An army of Black Orcs will look cool, the units will work well, but will leave precious few points left to spend other toys.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Um...that's kind of what I was trying to say ^......I just used allot more words!  8)

G_H
I have thought about this some more.

Ok, so the first question is; do you want your armies fluff to be based around Black Orcs or your actual army to be based on Black Orcs?

If you just like the models and want the army to look like a Black Orc army (with no exceptions) then actually this could work well. You could use Black Orcs models as "counts as..." Orcs. Over and above that, the units you want to count as actual Black Orcs would have to be painted differently.

This could mean that you could indeed have 100% Black Orc army, but only the few units "identified" as Black Orcs would count as them.

That might work; certainly in friendly games. I honestly can't see Conogre minding!  ;)
