I had a dream brothers....and it was green

original thread ↗

I have been pretty busy over the last week buying up loads of new stuff to really give my Ogre army a boost and get more units in and finished to really round my OK army off.
If there ever is an "end" to an army (and I don't believe there ever is) from the point of view of having most bases covered, then I am almost there. (to be more specific I have either bought or built; a thundertusk, a stonehorn, a scraplauncher, a second Ironblaster, 6 Mournfang, 3 Maneaters, a third butcher, a Firebelly and some yhetees. I had a birthday last week so this bunch was purchased with the generosity of friends and family).

This is all well and good but it does mean my mind has started to wander to thoughts of a new army and I woke up this morning having dreamed of a sea of green fungus like characters riding on giant pigs.

So the question is this; should a staunch ogre lover decide to look into the possibility of starting an Orcs and Goblins army what would be the best way of doing this? More over, what would be a decent all comers list/ build for O&G?

If it helps at all I already have about 120 Night Goblins, 20+ Spider riders and I am currently converting a bunch of Orcs for a friend (that I am getting the feeling he will never receive!).

How many units of orcs should I have (roughly)? Who is a decent character points-wise to add in? Which is the best way to go for covering magic? Is it sensible to build a savage orc army with little else?

Any advice on building an O&G army would be greatly received. Meanwhile, I have a couple of ogres to get painted  :?  as stated above...best get on with that now then!

Literally hundreds of battle reports and tactica videos from an accomplished O&G player.  Should provide plenty of inspiration.

Please don't do his current 3000 pt build ... 3 hordes of trolls and a horde of savage big'uns.  Win or lose, I would imagine it wouldn't be much fun to play against.  Although I may have to next weekend at Brawler's Bash.

I had some games with OnG so far and parts of the army is very appealing. Alot of OnG players (I think) tend to love the randomness of animosity and the night goblin magic, but I really dislike it! Animosity can somewhat be avoided by black orc characters but the point price is premium.

The cav is not great with poor ini, AS and move for the price so you will deploy lots of orcs and goblin units with move 4... going from ogres the lower movement is tough : )

I really loved the idea of using normal orc boys (also as big'uns) but the T4 5/6+AS is just too little to keep them alive and I had to resort to the standard savage bus with the shrunken head on a lvl4 and a black orc lord or BSB, basically tying up 6-700+ point in a unit you'll close to always need. The savage unit is tough and hitty (and M4!) but it get boring (I think).
Also with the great selection of warmachines you'll tend to play rather defensively which just doesnt feel right for OnG to me. Dual rock lobber and Doom diver is just great but the point investment dictate that you hang back and gunline (and by turn 3 yout M4 orc wont move mcuh forward).

Trolls on the other hand is a great choice - nice models and hitty but they require leadership from the general for the stupidity.
But besides the above slightly negative rant the book was so many diverse special and rare choices that fulfill alot of roles and you can make lots of different builds. This is something you'll never get tired of experimenting with (just remember that you'll need some of the trolls and savages and warmachines to pack the baseline punch).

And hordes upon hordes of goblins is just great.. I have 200+ standing around just because... : )

I have seen some of the Malorian videos and I must admit that I dont like his style or videos much. But they are a decent source for input - but as above the OnG army is so diverse that you can go your own way - but for competetive builds you'll be somewhat limited in diversity.

Enjoy the painting and gaming with OnG!

O&G are my biggest fantasy army. I have a night goblin themed army and those big blocks of night goblins make great anvils. They'll rarely win a combat but they'll hold long enough that your trolls or orcs can swoop in from the flank and win in the 2nd turn of combat.

I highly recommend a couple of Mangler Squigs to soften up the enemy line.

I have had mixed but fun results with 1-2 small units of 7 Squigs with 3 herders. I run them up ahead of the main army. They do some damage, and if they lose the combat they explode rather than just fleeing. And they are only 65 points, which usually pays off.

Savage Orcs are great, so you wouldn't regret theming your army savage either.

Also, just for fun you could pick up a big foot template - Foot of Gork like a pro! http://bit.ly/QssEJC
Oh O&G, my first fantasy army and i still love them! You can go anywhere with the army, do you like goblins? Go full goblin! You want to go orc-heavy? Use orcs! I myself use a mix of savage orcs, normal orcs and squigs. My main army exists of 2 or 3 HUGE blocks of fellas, most of the time those are savage big'uns and a squig herd. I can really recommend both of them: Savage orcs do a TON of damage against... well, everything! When you buff them, they wreck everything, they be temple guard, chaos warriors or huge blocks of rats. The squigs are just an awsomely coloured unit and nobody expects them! They have 0 armour but when they flee they do even more damage. I'd also reccomend some doom divers, they are awsome at sniping characters and chaff.

In the character departement; most of the time i use a scroll caddy, a Black orc warboss for his leadership and anti-animosity in a big unit (and believe me, he will help!) and a level 4 savage shaman who can also chop stuff up.

Have some fun collecting these green dudes, they are an awsome army! If you ever need something answered, just ask.

Greetings MichaelJohn
I have been very tempted lately by doing a pure night goblin army, they wont win much but god will be fun to play and have a laugh and thats more important to me then winning lol.
