Picking out the Cauldron of Blood

original thread ↗

As I understand it, you can use a cannon to try and pick out a Cauldron of Blood (or a Screaming Bell, for example), but BS-based shooting (ala Leadbelchers) can't pick it out of the unit.

do I have this right, and can anyone provide page numbers?
I think it's page 113 in the big rule book.

A cannon is treated as a template weapon. So when the cannon ball passes through the unit and cauldron you get to resolve hits on both as all models touched by a template weapon are hit.

BS based shooting targets majority first, the units generally.

If there are more hits then models your opponent gets to distribute hits evenly throughout the unit.
My horde of beastmen against your ogre horde?

Ok but I get a horde of Leadbelchers.
Um...^ That basically.  :D

Keep in mind however isn't the Cauldron of Blood a different unit type so can effectively be picked out for shooting?

Shooting at a Cauldron of Blood doesn't work quite as simple as picking to shoot it. I found this on another thread that explains it quite well:

Q: How does BS shooting work against the
combined unit?
A: Per characters of different troop type in units
rules (RB p.99), the Cauldron/Shrine can be hit
by BS shooting but can't be hit more than once
until every model in the unit has had a single hit
allocated to it as well.

Q: How does template shooting work?
A: As a unit containing a character of a different
troop type. The Look-Out-Sir! rule does not
apply. (RB p.99).

This works a bit differently from the Screaming Bell as there is an extract in the Skaven book saying that you can choose to shoot the bell itself.
