Warhammer Battlescrolls.

So I am not that up on GW happenings but the Battlescrolls system just caught my eye with "The Restless Dead". Had anyone messed around with these army formats and if so what are your thoughts? Anything there for creative Ogre players?

nothing creative for OK (Restless Dead is for VC only, Creatures of the Chaos Wastes is for chaos only, etc), but there are some scenario ones for everyone like Blood in the snow and Vanguard Clash.  but they're just narrative battle missions

So you can't use these forces as allies in other armies? I must have misunderstood.

nope, battle scroll (and 40k dataslate) formations state the army they are used for.  so far i've only found vampire and chaos ones.

there are some more liberal ones in 40k, but there's like 2 dozen 40k ones but only 6 or so fantasy ones.

maybe in time..... like an official Rhinox Rider one, like we need it.

I'm going to be honest, this whole battlescroll concept seems like a giant wank to me. Just more useless, half baked crap that will flop and end up making a negative impact on the hobby before they eventually discontinue the product.

It was awkward too because people thought they actually could be used in other armies. I saw a beautiful Arkhan the Black list devised for the Restless Dead when the concept first arose.

Actually, Battlescrolls can be used by any Army, they just follow the rules of Allies ( this is in the rules, Allied Formations in the Battlescroll. Pg 4 for Creatures of the Wastes ).
So Ogres can take the Restless Dead or Creatures of the Chaos Wastes, but they are Suspicious Allies.
