Combined Arms approach - A step back in time

Howdy all

I want to get some insight into what people love about the Ogre Kingdoms in terms of army lists/selection.  Rather than post this in the army list section I wish to first establish a broader view.

What I'm after is when the Ogre Kingdoms book was first released what did your list look like before the typical 'net' lists we currently see.  For instance what unit looked so cool that you just had to take it in your list regard?

For me its the big monsters, I thought the inclusion of the Stonehorn and Thundertusk were going to be an auto include not only from a model point of view but they've got pretty good stats.

I picked up the army about 8-9 months after the book came out and coming out of a 3 year hiatus of doing any tabletop gaming so not only was I unfamiliar with how the old book had deteriorated but also with the power creep that happened at the end of 7th. I began them because I always loved the caveman aspect of the old book and so when the new book played that up I knew that this would be the army to pull me back into fantasy, which they sure did.
Before I'd even read the book I knew that if sabretusks were able to be taken as independent units then regardless of rules I would try my damnedest to make them work. I don't have to try hard

I like the horde idea and going from dwarfs to ogres, it was just one of the things I really liked.
It's just start simple ; )

Heh, seems like so long ago already

I was about the hordes. I have 24 Bulls in my collection, intended to be a 24-pack of Bulls (for 18 extra wounds before I started losing attacks, because why not? lol). I even have the movement tray for 24 lol...

That, and I was happy that the Leadbelchers would no longer be blowing themselves off the table with the artillery dice. I more often than not in the old book would wipe out my own Leadies with 2-3 misfires per shooting phase... yuck lol...

I was also very happy about being able to run magic at point values lower than 1500, so I was happily using a Slaughtermaster as a general first out of the gates lol...

Other than that, I honestly didn't get much gameplay in during the early years, I was too busy trying to gather my collection and put it together

Ogres were the first Warhammer army I started (after nearly a 20yr break, so O&G were my first army...but that was a long time ago).

The things that drew me to them were their sheer size and the way some of the units looked. I wanted to run Leadbelchers because they just looked so cool with their huge cannons.

I also wanted (and this is kind of the selling point to me) to have an army that I could have a giant in. Having already done O&G a very long time ago, and already having an Ork army for 40k I figured big guys with the big guy would look pretty awesome when placed on the table.

I never really read any of the rules at first and was imagery and fluff lead. Ironically, the other two things that I really wanted to have was Bragg and Skrag. Ironic because I have neither of them! When I discovered that Brag was a teeny tiny little model and didn't bring much, muscle-wise, to the table I decided I could just put hoods on bulls instead; so he was out.
The same thing (kind of) with Skrag. The option of having a Slaughtermaster was so much more cost effective that (in-spite of loving the model and fluff) there just seemed no need to get him, not until I do a completest push on the army and try and get one of every model.

Well, my old Ogre list was more of a side project from my main Dogs of War army - the reason I got them in the first place. So when I did run them every now and then with regular rules, it was mostly experimental.

When 8th hit, I started running proper blocks with joy! It was mostly just blocks with a Gorger and Gnoblars mind. Some Maneater models for conversion fun.

And when the new book hit, my first thought was to Slaughtermaster, ALL THE TIME. Gnoblars became 10 man trapper squads, and I began to buy odds and ends.

I got Yhetees, cos they looked cool and were now cheap! And then the Ironblaster, because I wanted a badass giant cannon. Finally... Stonehorn. Because it's big and runs things over, and what more could you want in life?

After that came serious purchases - but mostly, my list was just blocks with a Stonehorn and Gorger and Ironblaster involved. Simple, but fun.

@Joa/Saz - I totally understand the horde thing and for me personally Ogres are the premiere army to do it, let's be honest they're not the sharpest tools in the shed so why wouldn't they just get together into the largest group and run at the enemy intimidating everything on the way?

First thing to leap out at me was the Thundertusk.  Absolutely had to have one.  After that I love the idea of the Ogre Horde, but have only gotten to run it twice (I too have the movement tray for it).  People were too quick to cry foul when I put that many Ogres on the table.

OH!  Completely forgot Giants!  Half the reason I started Ogres was to field a Giant and I still haven't done it.

Also,

Maybe not so much about the army, but after painting dwarf being so fricking small I wanted to paint something where each model had the option to stand out and be different and where the small details were not as important as the overall paint job. Needless to say this idea conflicts very much with the idea of fielding a horde of ogres ; ) But to this day I am still happy to paint ogres due to the size (painting 50 BFSP dwarf warriors will make most a bit nuts).

Also, thinking about it;

I think I totally agree with Joakhim/ Saz that I wanted a horde of ogres. The sheer number of bulls I have painted now is testament to the fact that I had this vision in my head of massive horde units of bulls, backed with giants and leadies bearing down on their foe!

Maybe this is why I never painted too many Ironguts? I just figured if you had enough ogres then they could trample anything to death. (Yeh, I wasn't thinking too much about magic obviously).

It's interesting to note the pattern of the Ogre horde.  This is somewhat pleasing actually and if everyone likes it then why aren't we seeing more of them pop up in games?  I know the usual PSun scare etc however if we're purely running on aesthetics then why not make it an auto include?

Jimmy you are so right. I am ashamed. 

I honestly don't know why I don't just bung all my ogres into one seathing mass of flesh and sweat and charge them at my foes. It was always my original intention when I first started playing ogres. I think I must have been subliminally influenced by "the list" even though I have always tried to avoid it...

I have to agree with most of the above here. Im new to warhammer but the Ogres appealed to me on a purely fluff level, as i had only played a few games prior to picking them up.

Love the leaddies with their big guns, and as G_H said, GIANT big guys with a bigger guy, cant be anything apart from cool.
Since being part of this fantastic comunnity i have found myself wanting a horde of bulls too . I will play a game one day with minimal characters and bulls everywhere.

Don't be ashamed mate, that's crazy talk!  Always time to change.  I ran a very combined arms list list today at 1500 points and it was very entertaining.  Will post up the game at some stage.
