how do i calculate shooting if i have a Ballistic skill of 7 i moved im shooting at skirmishers in cover at long range

do the modifyers go on to hit chance or do they go against the ballistic skill?
On page 40 of the big rulebook there is a table showing on which dicerolls you can hit. If you have a ballistic skill of 7 you will hit on a 0, though the roll of a 1 is always a failure. If you shoot at long range, you modify your roll to a 1 and you will hit on a 1+, again, the roll to hit of a 1 is always a failure. Hope this helps!

+1 to Michaeljohn's post.

Also, what's the level of cover? soft is -1, hard is -2. With skirmishers, long range, and (presumably) soft cover, you're looking at a -4 base, which puts you up to a 4+ to hit with BS7.

Modifiers go against the "To Hit" roll, not the BS itself. Basically, the BS sets your initial roll value (at BS7, for example, your initial value is a 0+). Then, you input the modifiers to that initial roll, and then roll from there.

Hope this helps!

ok so i never modify the ballistic skill but find out the odds of hitting without any coinditional modifyers and then subtract from the base number? so a bs of 7 i hit on 0 then -1 for moving -1 for long range -1 for soft cover -1 for skirmishers.    meaning a bs7 will hit on a 5+ ?
You almost got it, you start with the 0 from your BS7, -1 from the move makes 1+, long range makes it 2+, soft cover 3+ and finally the -1 from skirmishers makes you hit on a 4+. If it were hard cover or maybe multiple shots or something i'd make you hit on a 5+.
It actually works fine if you take the hit modifier from the BS, it only gets into trouble when you hit BS0 or less. Just remember that a 1 always misses!

So if you have BS7 and you moved (-1), long range (-1) and heavy cover (-2) you can simply do BS7-4 = BS3 so hit on a 4+.

What you need to watch for is if your BS is reduced below 1 after modifiers you can still hit but need to follow the rules for 7s to hit.

Yeah, this is true, you can technically figure it out using either method (either adjusting the BS or adjusting the To-Hit roll). I think it comes down to which way you're more comfortable using. I like to adjust the To-Hit roll because I find that it's easier for me to remember by "adding" to the final roll rather than subtracting from my BS. However, having only played Ogres and having the highest BS available being a 4, I think it makes more sense to me in that respect :P
