I really like the 40k and Fantasy universes, but I have run across some GW books that are so painful to read I just can't get through them.  What books would you guys recommend to me?

For Fantasy you can't go wrong with Gotrek & Felix. The first two omnibus by William King are a great investment.

the Commissar Caiphas Cain series is amazing.  its dark comedy, intrigue and action from a commissar who tries to avoid dying with every fiber of his being and the universe that keeps trying to make him cry.

Gaunt's Ghosts. GW's best selling series by a single author for a reason.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

I enjoy the Gaunt series but some of it gets a little sloggish. Probably my favorite 40k series though.

I really loved the Brunner anthology. That one has some Ogre action in it. The Time of Legends series are all pretty worthwhile and easy reading. I dug the Nagash ones.

Commisar Cain series for sure I love that guy so much!  I also have most of the Horus Heresy again good reads some amazing.

Currently reading Salamder Omnibus atm which was bought for my Birthday which so far I'am enjoying as well.

Gaunt's Ghosts series is a great read. Best selling series for a reason, as Eg already mentioned.

The Horus Heresy series is also a great series of novels. Quite a long series though, and it does jump between the Legions and events. If you're not a Space Marine fan this might not be up your alley... :P I do recommend it warmly though :)

The Night Lords series by Aaron Dembski-Bowden is fantastic. One of my favourite series :) A great book from ADB is also Emperor's Gift, which is about Grey Knights...

For Fantasy, I definitely recommend the Time of Legends books. I especially enjoyed the Sundering series, as I'm a fan of the Dark Elves (and elves in general :P ). Nice to know how the current situation got started etc etc...

The Malus Darkblade series was a fantastic read. All in all I think there were 5 books all if which kept me reading for hours! I'm currently working my way through the Teclis and Tyrion books, they are proving to be pretty sweet as well.

I just started Horus heresy audio book. Have no idea what's going on though. As I don't know the characters :(

Did you start from the beginning? :D

Seriously though, you need to start the Horus Heresy books from the start. Some of the books can work as standalone books, but most of the stuff starts from the Horus Rising book. To fully enjoy the books you really need to know what happened in the earlier books :)

A daunting task, considering that there's something like 30 Horus Heresy books out already :D
