I have been messing around with a beasts bruiser, mainly for wildform but Trans looks such a hoot I now take it whenever I can although I very rarely get it or get if off if I do.
A game or so ago I cast it and realised I didn't know how to play it!
Rarrrgh! I charge my deathstar into a unit. Zapp! My Butcher is now a thwocking great chimera. errr.....
As a monster he cannot stay in the unit I think? Does he therefore get a free move out even though he is in combat? And does the unit effectively get a free reform around his space? If so I assume it must keep the same formation? When it gets dispelled next turn does he get to hop back it the unit (I can see no way he can but...)?
The frontage of my 'star is wider than the frontage of the enemy unit. Does my 'star slide along to get my shiney new chimera in or is the monster out of combat?
We didnt bother sorting it out in our game as it was a unit of buffed up IGs into the flank of his one remaining unit - 15 swordmasters- in T6 so he just held out his hand anyway but it would be interesting to find out what should have happened!

With Transformation, if the Wizard is in a unit he remains in the unit even though he is now a monster.

Really? That is pretty cool. Does he need to displace to the side of the unit owing to base size issues? That makes it even better than I had thought.

correct, because his base size is different he'll end up on one of the ends of the unit which could rightfully push him out of combat so weigh that up before casting.

But some of the models dont have official base sizes so figuring out what to use is tricky.
I've heard of people also just keeping the 40x40 base but I'd say that is not true to the intend of the game : ) Most likely the base size should be 50mm wide at least putting you on the side of the unit, which can minimize the attack hitting your wizard : )

If you're unsure of a base size use the 50/50 monster base as most if not all monster models now or in the past were on a base that size so it would be a legal base size and the 'it's a monster this is a monster base'.
I don't think you can move it to the edge of the unit and out of combat as you can't move out of combat.

Chuck Norris was the fourth wise man and gave Jesus his favorite gift, a beard. The other wise men were so hacked off, they got Chuck Norris removed from the bible. Mysteriously, they all later died of Roundhouse kick related injuries.

Most monsters are on chariot bases (50x100mm) or the big monster bases (100x150mm). I usually use the chariot base for the non-boosted transformation and the big base for the boosted version.

My ogreised chimera (it has mournfang head rather than the lionish one) is on a 50 x 100. The absence of any clear rules on how placement operates for this spell seems to be something of a rules lacuna here. Very unusual for GW.

Very unusual? This is GW we're talking about!
Chariot base is a fairly safe bet. Smaller or bigger might raise eyebrows, and given that GW make a chimera on a chariot base, it seems as good a precedent as any for a mountain chimera.
