clarification on stomps and impact hits

original thread ↗

Ok so last night I played my first game in fantasy since 4th edition.   My friend got me into it again and I played at 2500 points vs vampire counts.

So having played my first game some stuff came up and I am not sure if we played it right or not.   Namely stomps and impact hits.

If you have a squad of ogres who can make impact and stomp attacks?    Is it just the first row or is it anyone who can attack?   We played both as only the first row and I have no idea if that is correct or not.   I tried to look in the mini 8th book but couldn't find it looking under variable things I looked under.

I really like how the army played but I was very disappointed in cannons over all, maybe it is because my opponent didn't field anything really nasty or just trying to get a feel for how they are used.

Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks in advance.
Only Ogre models in B2B contact at the front with enemy models can do impact hits, aswell as for stomps, but the latter only against infantry unit type

Remember that every complete rank of 3 Ogre models behind the 1st rank, gives +1S to the model at the front rank. An unit of 3 ranks has +2S on impact hits.

Also you have the "Ogre charge" with D3 impact hits per model on the 1st rank that is in B2B contact, when you roll 10 pips on your charge distance AND/OR your overrun !!! So, always roll for charge or overrun, even if the distance is only 2" away... and your opponent allows you an "auto in". Always roll "-)

Before impact hits are distributed as per shooting, you can make way with your character from 2nd rank to the first rank. Nice oppurtunity to pop up the Strength to S7 with 2 Ranks behind your hero.

Have fun with your second battle.
I also had lot of battles with low results of my cannons. Including the explosion part :-(( hahaha. But it turned all to average in the long run.

Both Impact hits and Stomps specify models in base to base with the enemy get to make them(assuming the unit type is eligible to be stomped)

So in the event an Ogre unit has an enemy unit in the flank of a type that can be stomped, all those guys would get to stomp too.

Also, remember, it doesn't have to be a complete rank, just a rank of 3 for monstrous infantry; so, if you have a 5 wide formation, but the back rank is only 3, those three still confer the bonus to ALL models in the front rank, not just those directly to the front the way supporting attacks work

The following unit types can be Stomped / Thunderstomped:  Infantry, War Beasts, and Swarms.

Have to mention as well, just because the Ironblaster doesn't have anything big to shoot at get it stuck in.  Grapeshot is still worthwhile and/or charge it in, it's a T6 chariot capable of decent combat resolution.  :)

I will keep that in mind, thanks everyone.   My opponent though very skilled with warhammer didn't have much experience with Ogres and even though I had the rule book I only found a little bit about monsterous infantry.
I am quite sure you cannot stomp swamp type units.

From the BRB, pg 76:  "A Stomp has the Always Strikes Last special rule, and inflicts 1 automatic hit, at the model's Strength, on one enemy infantry, war beasts, or swarm unit in base contact with the model."

Can't killing blow swarms though. But stomp away!  How else would you deal with bugs?
