Challanges and stomps

original thread ↗

Scenario time:

Empire general issues challenge on an ogre bull unit with a bruise and the general is in a small unit of 10 or so.
The champion accepts the challenge, the empire unit is wiped out but so is the champion of the unit. This all occurs before stomps.

After the champion is killed can the rest of the unit stomp the general? The ogre player argued yes as he is no longer in the challenge but I had the argument the challenge had to last the whole combat.

I was just a by stander but I was hoping someone could clear it up just incase this rare scenario occurs again in the future.

Direct quotation would be useful so I could know for future reference.
I believe he's correct, since the challenge finishes out before the rest of the combat occurs; stomps are considered an ASL attack, so they happen at the end of the combat, and since the general was no longer in a challenge at that point then it would be open game.

BUT, I'm not 100% sure.  :>P

New book WLD: 20/10/2 - Yay tourney wins and random game win!

Models in a challenge can only be wounded by models in the challenge.  It has it benefits, but also their cons...

Also, when 1 monster with character is against an unit, and it is challenged by champion of that unit, he cannot decline the challenge. When hero kills champion, the monster cannot do any attacks....also no Stomps against unit.

No, you cannot Stomp the general. This is because the Challenge technically lasts the entire round.

Lets expand the issue a bit.
If the Empire General killed the champ at the I4 step, could your I3 ogres or ASL Great Weapons hit him?

No. If you're in a challenge you're effectively immune to any attacks from outside the challenge, even if he has killed his opponent. If you kill the opposing challenger only it's mount if it had one can still attack in the challenge.

The only exception is a champion may still take overflow wounds from the unit depending on interpretation of the rule.
But overflow wounds has to be casued at the same ini-step, right?

I mean, a mournfang champ with gw kills a challenger. The mount (ini2) kills the opponent, but as the opponent is already dead, I am in doubt if the remaining attacks (and potentially stomp) can be done later as they have ASL?

This one I've never been 100% on.  I've always been told that once the guy's dead he's dead, you can't just keep wailing on him because you've got more attacks.

I believe this is correct. Once the guy's dead there's nothing left for a lower In step to attack. I think a red fury vamp or a saurus character with their extra attack generation should still get extra attacks for overkill purposes due to them happening at the same initiative, but mounts and stomps would be excluded. There was some discussion about a GW hunter on stonehorn awhile back, one of the highlights of that build was that the GW and thunderstomp go at the same time so you can achieve maximum overkill quite easily.

Yup, this is how it works.  You get all of the attacks at the same initiative, but once he's dead from those attacks, you don't get to keep attacking.  Remember that stomps are ASL, so if you have a tyrant in a challenge, he gets all of his attacks at initiative 4.  If you kill the guy on your first swing or on your last, it doesn't matter, because now you can't stomp.

The mounted character with a great weapon is a commonly used trick when playing with carnosaurs.  You give your old blood or scar vet a great weapon.  If the carnosaur kills the guy in a challenge, you get the multiple wounds helping achieve overkill.  If the carnosaur fails, you get all the great weapon swings and the thunderstomp, so you can get overkill that way.

Yes that's right, you lose any additional attacks at a later initiative stage against the dead challenger.

That's not what I meant though. If you attack rank and file, normally if you do enough wounds to kill the unit any leftover wounds will "spill over" (not overkill) onto the champion, who is the last to die. It's not 100% clear if this still happens when the champion is involved in a challenge but ETC ruled that it did and AFAIK that's the consensus.
