The Ogre Kingdoms army book

original thread ↗

Today, for the first time in a long time, I found myself flicking through the OK army book and reading through the history (fluff) and some of the descriptions of rules etc (as I have an aversion to watching the soap operas that my missus so enjoys!) and I found that I had a bunch of questions that came to mind.

Odd stuff in the main like how many Ogre women are there and what do they do (more specifically) within the Ogre world? Who decides which whelp gets "caved up" and later turns into a Gorger? Why don't they make a challenge stone model? What are the chances of resurrecting Brough the Slavelord? Why are there no combined Chaos Dwarf "trader" units available for an OK army? Why did they change the Slavegiant into just a giant? As the longest standing character, why don't we have more info on the history of Golfgag and his maneaters? As a character, shouldn't the Hunter and sabretusks be at least as powerful as say a unit of Maneaters? Who is thicker (dumber) Orcs or Ogres? (I remember reading this somewhere here!) General stuff really.

It got me to thinking that, if you could actually ask someone involved with the creation of the army book, what would you ask them?

There must be stuff that everyone has pondered over relating to fluff, rules, history, characters, models, etc that people would want to know more about...so (throwing this thought out there) what would you want to know/ ask?

Not really associated with the army book, but I would ask where my Ogre novel(s) are? Golgfag would make for a great series nd so would Skrag on their own. I have seen two ogres in the Gotrek&Felix omnibuses (through the third anyway) anf then they have very tiny roles. I want to hear about all the smashing and eating!

I think I can answer a fair few of your questions actually...

1. Ogre Women are rarely mentioned for some reason, but I figure they're like womenfolk in any other warrior culture - mostly doing domestic stuff. If the terrible female Maneater model is anything to go by, I gather that they wouldn't be taken seriously trying to fight either sadly. Florence and Lorenzo books mostly have them as just domestics in the background.

2. I think it's general social obligation to lob a paunchless Ogre child into a nearby pit, though Butchers probably are the ones to consult in these matters.

3. Challenge Stone Model... no idea =P

4. Brough might not be reused because he uses a different type of unit if I recall. Not sure GW are keen on inter-army mixing, the dirty racists.

5. Chaos Dwarves, according to the Tamurkhan book, are jerks who hate every other race with an overwhelming bitterness. They'll trade, and sometimes help the Chaos cause, but on the whole they wouldn't work with some random Ogre tribe whom they'd much rather enslave (see the Dreadquake Mortar model).

6. Slavegiant just so he doesn't HAVE to be a slave, I'm guessing. Bit odd, but meh.

7. Golgfag's got loads of fluff in old Dogs of War books, but I think GW want to keep backstories short enough for one page. Plus, he's not like other characters who've played pivotal parts in Warhammer history sadly.

8. Power level's a hard to judge thing, can't really say who should be better than what.

9. I think Orcs are dumber, since Ogres have the capability to be 'civilised'. There's very few mentions of Greenskin mercenaries in fluff, for example.

I suppose if I were to ask a question, it'd be more to do with why the Tyrant can't have a cool mount? Gnark Ironskin has one!
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I think we may be missing the most interesting point GH raised here:

... if you could actually ask someone involved with the creation of the army book, what would you ask them? ...

and I am loving the question answers you came up with psychichobo, but more interesting is the question - why can't a tyrant have a mount!?

If you can have a chaos Lord (or various races) on a dragon, why can't the Tyrant ride into battle on a mournfang at least?

But that sounds like army book gripes and that, again is a little different.

If I could ask anything I would go with...

What were your main inspirations for the Ogre civilisation?
What did you enjoy most about writing the OK book?
Which is your favourite unit and why?
How do Ogres reproduce?
What do female ogres do with their time if the men hunt and gnoblars do the cooking and cleaning, live a life of luxury with ice baths, globular masseuses and maw inspired flaming cocktails?
Why is the Overtyrant unable to walk (really. I mean, is it chronic haemorrhoids?)
What is the most famous instance of an ogre for hire changing the outcome of a conflict?

Again - I don't think GH wants these answered (correct me if I'm wrong?).

What questions would you guys like answered by the pros if you could hunt one down and get your gnoblars to trap them?

I saw an interview with Vetock, he was asked both these questions. His favourite part was creating the Golgfag rules with Jervis and his favourite unit is the Stonehorn
Game's the same, just got more fierce.

@Belchfist Beastkiller; Yes, I wasn't really expecting answers, partially because the questions that came to my mind were stuff that, if you wanted to be Uber accurate, only the people who wrote the book could answer; we can guess and surmise, but in reality only the Vetock guy and Jarvis could really say what they were thinking when they wrote stuff.

My point was more what would you ask these people if it was possible to do so.
