Are my eyes playing tricks or is GW actually charging AUS$5 for an eBook on how to paint to a single mini?  Isn't that what White Dwarf is for... Absurd.  I haven't bought a WD for awhile now, due to the clifflike decline in good material, but what exactly do they put in it these days?

The WD as many of us know it changed a couple of months back. Instead of just one monthly magazine, there's now two: the weekly White Dwarf and the monthly Warhammer: Visions. Of these two, the WD has all the new releases for that week. It's available on the Saturday a week before the new stuff is available for order. WD also includes paint splatter (for the new releases), Blanchitsu, Jervis Johnson's ramblings, some hobby stuff and 'tactica', desingers' input on the new models and rules, etc etc. In other words, the kind of hobby stuff that was in the old White Dwarf

Warhammer: Visions on the other hand is a booklet of pretty pictures. In the centre spotlight are the releases of the previous month. There are always dozens of pictures of the same model, from multiple angles and possibly even a "mid-battle" shot, where the model is fighting against an opposing army. Visions also has very little text, and of the text that there is only a third is useful, as it's in three languages so the same sentence or two on the occasional page is always repeated three times... There's also a battle report, which is more or less on the same lines as the rest of the pictures. No clear information as to what is happening, just pictures with very little text, such as "The Lictor pounced on the unsuspecting Imperial Guardsmen", which really tells you nothing of the actual game In the end there is just a mention of which side won. No pre- or after-battle ramblings, or input from people who watched the game. Just pictures. I didn't realize it was a battle report until I read "Chaos Space Marine victory", in the first Visions book

So the general consensus is that Visions is a waste of paper, whereas the weekly WD is more or less worth the money. Depends on what you're after really, but it's got the hobby ramblings, so I like it much more. Visions is just pictures, most of which are repetitions of the earlier month's WD pictures. However, you can't order the WD as a sub, so you have to drag your rear to the nearest GW store

So yeah, most of the 'how to paint'-stuff is available as an eBook download in exchange for money

The "How to Paint" one miniature e-book is a scam, simply on the basis that they are charging absurd amounts of cash for a resource that should not only be free from them as a good way of engaging with their client-base, but is free across the entirety of the internet in the form of painting guides and great advice from the likes of you guys

Warhammer Visions is a poor product from GW, and one I am still incensed that I am paying for when I didn't sign up to it (I subscribed to the old WD, and wasn't given the option to cease my subscription when the changeover took place!). I'm sure the pictures are mighty pretty, but that's not why I used to buy WD. It's infuriating. Top that off with the White Dwarf Weekly now being double the cost of the old one over a month, and being pick up in store only, and it's just a total car crash of a situation. Rant over

Just to continue JJ's rant for a moment.  The Warhammer Visions does have a battle report in it, which is one of the things I enjoy reading in WD.  The thing that pisses me off is that it is exactly the same report they publish in the weekly.  Why on earth should I have to pay twice for the same content!! 

For that and reasons stated above, I won't be buying Visions ever again.  The weekly is much better.

Ooh, I didn't even notice that bit about the battle rep!

But in all seriousness, the only thing that in any way appeals to me in Visions is the Army of the Month, and occasionally, the kitbash stuff. But even those don't always interest me, it's all down to what is in that month's thing. It really is a shame, as there was real potential in the booklet and the stuff that could have been done. But alas, it was not to be...

I've still got a number of the in-store sub tickets left, that can not be exchanged for anything but Visions. Or technically I could apparently grab one WD for one ticket, but then I'd be paying 8€ for the 3.20€ mag... Not really a bargain price However, after I get rid off those pesky tickets, I'll leave Visions at the store and won't look back...

I personally don't like the battle rep in the visions book.  It's far too story based and unrealistic.  The fact that it's in 3 languages too just leave not written word on the pages to speak of.  I miss the old battle reports where you actually had the "Games" bit in it with curve ball dice rolls and things like that. 

Games-workshop are forgetting the first word in their companies name a lot recently.  This is just one of their examples.  I actually cancelled my subscription over this and also sent a lengthy feedback email to Jerv.

Personally I liked the last white dwarf.  But hey.  It's happened now.  I find this weekly thing generally a waste of money but you can just buys the ones you want and not bother with the rest of the rubbish which suits me.


Wow rant over sorry guys.  Gonna take some deep breaths now.

Another thing I'd like to add, has anyone noticed that games workshop now not only doesn't advertise converting but almost seems to be opposed to it.  I can only speak for the previous incarnation of WD but it seemed to me that they promote 'straight from the box to the table', including terrain.  They used to have awesome articles on scratch terrain building (one that stuck with me was a silo out of a Pringles/Milo can), it was those articles that kept me buying it monthly for a very long time (even through the terrible period when they didn't bind them properly).

Terrain-building stuff went out the window the moment GW started selling more terrain that just the really old "alien jungle trees" or whatever they were called. Apparently it's not good advertisement in telling that you can do something yourself and save yourself dozens of euros at the same time...

As for converting, nowadays the converting articles focus on kit-bashing and the use of conversion kits. Once again, there's no point in their mind at showing that someone else makes bits, or how to make your own thunder hammer or something... Converting means buying many kits from them to make that one model you want
