So, it's clear that the ironblaster is not a war machine, it is a chariot. So, it has penalties for pivoting as movement and other such things.
However, it does not have it doesn't have slow to fire in the grapeshot rules, and since it is not a war machine and doesn't get the benefits, it also doesn't get that negative special rule.
I never would have thought of standing and shooting grapeshot with the ironblaster, but my partner did it to my opponent last night, wiped out his cold one knights and I couldn't find anything in the ogre book or the rule book to say he could not...the again I didn't spend more than a min checking. I had previously thought grapeshot worthless when you consider the chances to actually hit, but this has changed my opinion to decent if it is legal.
What is the general consensus?

On page 109 of the big rulebook it says warmachines can only hold. On the other hand, our ironblaster is a chariot, which 'shoots like a cannon'. War machines weapons have slow to fire, but ours is'nt a warmachine and does not have slow to fire either. One part of my brain tells me he can because it's a warmachine, the other part sais no because it fires like a cannon. I think we might need to mail GW about this one.

I think it's in the spirit of the rules that it doesn't get to stand and shoot. There might be a way to bend the rules to do it, but honestly, I think it would be a pretty lame opponent that tried that on me.

To what I know... All warmachines and most weapons that fire like a warmachine have the slow to fire rule. But I'm open minded here... :-)
But then there are still modifiers on the BSkill... letting you only hit on 6s or even worse... 7s.
Move in moving fase (no pivot in shooting fase)= -1 Over 6" away= over half range of 12" = -1 Stand and shoot reaction = -1

Okay, I can't find the FAQ on the new website, but it did have a specific FAQ that the Ironblaster cannon does in fact have the 'slow to fire' rule

I tend to agree with you.
However, for the sake of considering the merits of the other side of the argument, there is a lot to be said for the argument that it's far more expensive than a regular cannon for a reason; it's listed as a chariot and not a war machine for a reason; it's not a cannon but fires like a cannon for a reason; it can already do other things a cannon or any war machine cannot do; and so on. There are many units out there that "act" like something else in one form for simplicity of game functionality, but are in every other way different. similarly, you cannot then say you suffer all the negatives/positives of being a chariot and then some vague amount of the negatives of being a war machine but none of the positives of being a war machine.
If the FAQ were up, this might be easily answered.

@BigOgre, i thought you did not get a long range modifier if you use stand and shoot? I could be wrong but we have always played it like this, i can't find it in the rulebook that quickly...
BigOgre11 Apr 2014
The over half range modifier is always there....
*If charging unit is out of range when declaring a charge, It is written that you shoot, when they come within your maximum shooting range. = -1 modifier over half range
*If it is over half range, when declaring a charge = -1 modifier over half range
*If it is not over half range, when declaring a charge and not within their normal move distance = no modifier over half range
*If it is within their normal move distance to reach you, when declaring a charge, you do not have Stand and shoot reaction, unless you have "quick to Fire" weapons... (like Ogre pistol :-), but still -1 for stand and shoot reaction.
Throwing stars ("quick to Fire") for instance, have less range, so over 4" is already a -1 modifier for over half range, or what to think about the small handcrossbow ("quick to Fire") of Dark Elves Corsairs with max of 12".
Good to know.... Dwarves can have a handgun with 12" range within a unit of shooters with 24" weapons. The rule in BRB is, that the whole unit can only stand and shoot once and on the same time all together. So when charging unit is within 12" of the handgun, the 24" shooters don't have the -1 modifier for over half range.
If charging unit looses over 25% casualties and fail Ld, then they run, measured from the original starting point at moment of declaring the charge.
"quick to Fire" weapons negate move and shoot modifier of -1 To Hit (brought back to my attention the other day in a topic on Maneaters and brace of pistols :-)

You are correct, the FAQ does give the Slow to Fire rule to the Ironblaster to resolve this very issue.

"quick to Fire" weapons negate multiple shot modifier of -1 (brought back to my attention the other day in a topic on Maneaters and brace of pistols :-)
Wait, really? That's fantastic.
Edit: Though on closer inspection I haven't been able to find anywhere that supports it. Do you know which FAQ that's in?

Oooh....my bad....swapped the one for the other....
Not the -1 qualifier for multiple shot can be negated, but quick to fire weapons do not suffer the usual -1 To Hit penalty for moving and shooting.
I will update my post for the same. Page 73 BRB - Quick to Fire
And Ogre pistol has quick to fire rule.
