When it comes to spells like Savage beasts and Pann's Pelt does the unit champion count for the buffs

No they do not as they are not a character, just a unit upgrade with one or two modified stats. I call them demi characters because of this position they straddle between rank and file and character
Game's the same, just got more fierce.

+1, you can refer to champions as "command group", alongside the musician and the standard bearer. Even though the champion does have his own statline, it's an upgrade of the unit, and not a standalone unit (like a character).
