Less Than Humble Beginings - Of Rats and Ogre's

original thread ↗

Whelp, Just getting back into Fantasy after a LONG period of downtime.

Got a small ( 10k) Skaven Army, but leaving that until it gets painted up more to focus on my Ogre`s the only real choice :D

going to use this to keep track of what i`m doing and try to stay true to the painting pledge`s i have with with my local club.

played a couple games with ogre`s and was soundly smashed but getting used to new ed and army so to be expected hehe

will post up some models when i get home as at evil work just now :)
( i`m not a great painter, but tabletop standard is what i aim for and get heh )
Well, welcome to the Gnoblog community, can't wait to see some of your models and watch progression as the army grows. Painting standard really doesn't matter too much (as we just love seeing pictures of hordes of fatties!) but if you want it/ ask for it then people will bung you help and advice.

Looking forward to seeing your work

G_H
Muahaha Forgot had stuff on my phone, to the uploading some stuff to try and make sure i stick too it

My Slaughter master, the fine details seem to not come out so good

my WIP Lead Belchers, still need to get the fine details done on them
Welcome to the Stronghold! :D

Those models look great! I really like the sword swap. An even larger sword always works :) Can't wait to see more pics!

 That Butcher/ Slaughtermaster is packing one big a** chopper!
Looking forward to seeing more of your army as it progresses.

G_H
thank you for your kind welcomes and words :)

In reply to what you first said Gnoblar Herder, i`m always open to advice and criticism i know i`m not a great painter, don`t think i ever will be, but i have imagination and enough skills to get most of that onto the models which i`m happy with.

And i have plans Muahahahahahaahaa

the one project i`m gonna get to once my painting is up to date is having the champ of my Mornfangs wielding a horse like a club / flail, me and friends just find that image far too amusing to not do now so just looking about for a suitable model for it, and one other plan that i am keeping a secret but it is linked to the tribe name i have put ^^
If you have the money and the inclination, I would use the horse on the base (well in the hand of) the FW Mourngul. Mind you, it would be expensive....but you would end up with a decent horse/ club and the best part of a Mourngul...win/win (um...kind of!).

Whelp, after seeing the March of the hunters thread, and having a hunter thought i would give it a go :D

spent almost as long on this one model and base as i did on my Skorne Mammoth ( its a big boy )

Posting here for updated bloggy thing and in the main thread :)

did his base slightly different from the others as i wanted to to feel part of, yet different hence the snow to go the loner route

P.S
I like that horse, the only other one i have seen that i think may fit was the High elf Char dude`s one Teclis or somthing

but have time to look about, wanting to get my currant stuff painted before the really fun stuff begins
Looks good mate! The snowy bases really work well with your colour scheme :) I hope they work as well with mine :P

And so the fun starts, got a 2.4k game on Thursday, time to work on a list

My opponent is a Tourney player and i asked him to make it a proper game, learning in the deep end is better

So, thinking this as a list

general idea is to try and win on flanks with the MCV and Man eaters one to each side with the Iron Blaster covering the man eaters
and hte bul units doing what they do

still unsure about the small unit and maybe putting in Iron guts with a little rejig on points but will work it out heh

SlaughterMaster
-Other Trickersters Shard
- Fencers Blades ( hence the guy up there getting 2 large swords :D )
- Armour of Dest

Brusier
-BSB
-Great Weapon
-Heavy Arm
-Crown of Command

Fire Belly
-Add Hand Weapon
-Hellheart

Firebelly
-Add Hand Weapon
-Dispell Scroll

Bulls x 9
-Full COmmand
-Iron Fists

Bulls x 9
-Full COmmand
-Iron Fists

Bulls x 6
-Iron Fists

MFC x 3
-Full Command
-Ironfists
-Heavy Arm

Iron Blaster

Man Eaters x3
-Pistol Braces
-Heavy Arm
-Pioson
-Swiftstride
What army will your opponent be playing?

I am not sure about the two firebellies. If you are looking for another character to add in I may be tempted to go with a Butcher (use of more magic lore's may help esp Death if your Slaughtermaster is running Maw).

Adding Dragonhide banner to MFC always seem's to work well. That does look like allot of bulls, If the points could be squeezed I might be tempted to have a few leadbelchers (for added firepower) as they are pretty much bulls in CC and chuck your firebelly in with them for protection.

Would be really interested to know the army your up against, it can help to tailor a list. (and to be honest, there are people who are a thousand times better at lists than me on the forum)
G_H
going against Lizards :)

yeah i think i will change it up a bit, like that idea with the butcher will do that
and will grab some lead belchers for it, Twas a sound idea
Ah, well in that case I would consider taking the two firebellies then...mind you, could really do with Lore of Heavens to deal with them so maybe consider how to get that in.

Would think about putting in a couple of 2x kiitie units, to deflect fire. maybe a Gnoblar buffer backed with some IG with a decent character to be able to railroad behind the (going to run away Gnoblars).

Double Ironblaster, cheesy but in this case may be required. I have always found Lizardmen to be one of the most difficult armies to beat. In my case I am always happy to take a draw with them.

If he double Slaan's it then they are just better at magic, skinks can be a pain and saurus need something serious to take them out.

I would still stick with leadies though, Ogres with guns are always useful. maybe bump up the number of Maneaters to make sure that you can clear some units.

their magic is a pain and all-in-all they are pretty well matched (if not better) than Ogres. I wouldn't expect to win on a list alone, some luck will be required 9or bad luck on his part).

I would have a quick read through the "Know your enemy" section of this forum, there is bound to be something in there that may help.

Good luck, and I expect a full report once you have laid them lizards to waste!

G_H

Also, once you have taken a look at the "know your enemy" section why not try taking a look at this....it wont do any harm!

Well, was more or less smashed
BUT
Learned many lessions and my mate said that had it been against nearly anyone else, would have porlly smashed them.  main thing i was was agressive out of the gate, charges nad went for the thraot each turn...

Next time will try a new list, as still getting to grips of the units and understanding them and how i can use them

but so far OMG I LOVE MFC and the Ironblaster

to make myself feel better got myse;f a new model for my Lord, so can actully match the fluff i started writing hahaha

Meet hte Slaughterlord

once i paint him i`ll put up a better pic, still debating some stuff, but i`m thinking really pale skin stained red :D
Have always loved this model with his "Silent Hill" mask. All games are a learning curve...I don't doubt you will get better mate. Lizardmen are a pretty hard army to take on....still, it could be Chaos Dwarfs!

Can't wait to see Mr Silent Hill get some paint...keep posting them pictures

G_H
Yeah looking forward to painting him up, if hte weather keeps by the time i get home will be painting him tonight.

Will need to think on some new list idea`s as well as my Man eater Mordinheim gang hah
So, just me that thinks that guy got his head stuck in a clothes hamper?
haha yeah i can see it

Well, Without further ado the Slaughter Lord of the Blood Ridge Tribe

i have some fluff i`ll throw up later once i add editing and sense too it haha as fluff is always fun to do and think up when painting such fun models
"Silent Hill" is looking really good mate, can't wait to read fluff for this sinister-looking nut job.

Right, Been busy painting some Necrons ( as back to playing 40k a bit ) and a Conversion of Xerxis for my Skorne game for an upcoming Narrative campaign in Warmahordes which i`m running so wanted things to be pretty.... or something

But Back to the Ogre`s

My To do list for hte next couple weeks.....

Finish the Fluff for Tribe
Paint more stuff
play more Fantasy
Win a game with my Ogres !

Shimples :D
Would be interested to see what this Xerxis conversion is.....I have never heard of it nor do I know the game, so that would be interesting to me.

Would love to see more painted Ogres, and yes...win more games! Ogres can be a sweet army to play, and they win so much more when they have had a little "brush-love".

G_H
the game he is from is called Hordes ( the other half of Warmachine )
In general, Warmachine is a Steam-punk game and Hordes is more about monsters made by privateer press in my eyes its one of the most balanced and competitive wargames systems out there

Its very hard to play a game where you cannot win by purely the models on the table if you at least take a sensible army( read - does not have to be good etc but just conform to the general list making advice) Also rewards fluffy armies which is very nice with a system called Tiered lists which limit models but give other bonuses

The best way to describe my faction - Skorne is watch 300 and that movie is my faction having wargames :)

Anyhoot....

This is the Stock model

And this is my Ver

i have cleaned the model up a bit since the pics but it shows the model there enough :)

And re the painted Ogre`s Yup, that's the plan, have my Ghost ark to finish then its the Ogre`s to get them finished which is the goal for this month as off work for a week and a half :D

and then comes the trying to win my first game haha  but that takes time, need to learn the models, and how i interact with them, i personally found ya cannot netlist someone else`s work unless you think the way someone else does.  so could be a couple more games.  But on thinking about it, i think i will put my thoughts up here to see what other ppl think and perhaps can get some other insights :D

Thanks for getting me onto that train of thought
I love seeing models from other systems, and even better when they are someone's take on the models. Your conversion is fantastic, and I much prefer your version to the "official" one! :) Are there more like this on the way?

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Hey, thanks for that :)

Yes there is going to be some more like that, i have some idea`s for some alt models to convert for my Necron`s and vice versa as kinda got the bug now, so only basic stuff to start with and moving onto more advanced stuff as i improve my skill set, also i`ll pop up some of the other models i`m painting for my Skorne here too as a small distraction to my lack of painting Ogre`s just now >.>
Awesome, well I will definitely look forward to seeing more alt builds :) One of my favourite things about forums is seeing other people's take on things!

Also, cannot wait for the Skorne. I love me some Skorne! :)
