I don't have the rulebook right now, my maneaters have snipe and scout and are located on the flank of the enemy unit. I attempted sniping a character but he told me that i wasn't able because his character was not in the maneaters line of sight since i was on the flank.
Can maneaters still target a character in a unit even if i cant see them from since the character is not directly in front of them?

Aside from True Line of Sight being all the rage in 8th Edition, Sniper does specify you can shoot any model you can see. Keep in mind with Ogres being bigger than regular folk, there's good odds you can see him. Flank/Rear/Dancing through the tulips won't really apply, it's just whether you can see the model that you want to fire into.
Also keep in mind the other part of the Sniper rule, which states that a model with the Sniper Special Rule can fire at a different target to the rest of its unit.

So long as the target in question lies within the units forward 90 degree arc and is within LoS he can be shot. Even if your Maneaters are on the left flank of the unit and the Wizard is on the units right flank, so long as you can see and hit the unit the Wizard is a legitimate target. He is considered part of that unit whilst joining it so when targeting a single model within the unit you only need to be able to hit said unit before being able to target him. It's safer to ensure your range is able to get at him as well to avoid any arguments though.

Excellent guys and thanks... Also just to make sure i get this right. I get a -1 for sniping, -1 for multishot and if more than half away, another -1. Right?

Yes - hitting on 6's... and that's why poison is key with sniper : )
BUT if the opponent's unit receives even light cover from another unit or building then the poison wont work and sniping will hit on 7+ (close to no hits)

Hmm interesting, my understanding of sniping was:
1. All shooting is done at a unit
2. You can only shoot if you have LOS
3. Sniping allowed shooting at a specific model within the unit
4. Ergo, if you can see the unit you can see the model

I think this is the very simple way to state it. I would like to play the rules like this - the (true) line of sight gives issues but alternatively clarify with your opponent before you deploy your ME
