My new Plog, I decided to move my Yokai project over to a new topic to get a fresh start. This blog will be entirely focused on my greenstuffing and painting ogres into my 'Yokai' Clan, I'll continue to post all other projects onto my main Gnoblog.
To kick things off, a few quick things:
1. The stuff I'll be building are MY interpretation of Yokai, I'll undoubtedly change them round a bit to suit my intention (an ogre with an eyeball for an anus doesnt make the best sculpting project ). So what you see may not adhere to your visions of Japanese spirits.
2. This log is about me getting better at hobbying, mainly sculpting. If I can pass on any info at the same time then all the better. But I'm not claiming to be any better than anyone else.
3. I really appreciate feedback, both commendations and criticisms, however constructive criticism is probably the most beneficial for me. So if you see something off jump in and let me know. Also, if you want to know anything I'm more than happy to help.
4. And lastly. I'm not an exhaustive pool of knowledge on Japanese folklore, so the majority of my explanations and descriptions will be heavily cited off of internet resources (mainly wikipedia, because when it comes to factual info nothing is better).
Ok, so what are Yokai?
Yokai are a type of supernatural being from Japanese folklore, also known as ayakashi, mononoke and mamono. They range hugely from mishievious household items, to malevolent sadistic ogres. They often have the features of a particular animal and possess some form of supernatural power (however trivial).
This project is going to be an eclectic mix of the Yokai I create, which will hopefully amalgamate into a semi-cohesive force.
I don't have any wip pics today, but I do have a teaser. The concept drawing of the next Yokai (it gets the job done (barely)):
Before I start on this big fella though, I still have an Oni in need of a new hat and some attention. I think I sorted out the hat problem.
I get home tonight from work (I was gone longer than I thought I'd be). So expect updates a plenty in the next week.

@ Pirk. It is time consuming, with a little bit of trial and error. But hopefully its worth it at the end of the day.
I got some new firmer clay shapers in the mail and tried them out last night, I seriously don't know how I have greenstuffed without them. They make smoothing a dream and easily push natural looking folds into the putty, they could well be replacing my sewing needle as my favourite sculpting tool.
In other news, I sorted out the paddie hat problem.
Firstly cut a circle into some 1mm plasticard, I wanted my hat quite large so I traced around a 20mm base. Then make a radial cut from the centre of the circle to the edge. Overlap one side of the cut onto the other and superglue it in place, if you want a deep hat overlap it a lot if you want it shallow only do it a little bit. It should now look something like this:
This isn't the one I used, it's just a prototype. Cover the cone in a thin layer of greenstuff and sculpt your texture in. I divided it into 16 pie slices and then pushed 2 lines into each slice, then messed around a bit trying to get a terrace look. At this point the hat wasnt quite conical enough, so I added a small ball of putty to the tip and formed it into the point:
With the hat sorted I've now finished the gstuff work on the Oni:

Wow nice gs work, is your whole army going to be done that way? That's going to look awesome. I dunno what you're planning for basing or scenery, but there's a guy on the woc forum that's doing an oriental theme alas rah army lots of cherry blossoms and pink it's actually really beautiful and would for your theme I could try and find it if you wanna check it out

@ Wilson. Thats the plan, I have a prett short attention span though so I might only get a few done. Each ones massively different though so it should keep me interested. Yer if you can find it I'd love to have a look.
While I wait for the last gstuff on the oni to dry before priming, I started some base work on the next ogre:
This is by far the most ambitious sculpting I've ever done, getting the anatomy of the legs right is going to be difficult.

Ambitious sculpting is always intimidating, so taking it in steps is the key. I've never tried anything this ambitious (so kudos to you ), but I always try to plan ahead of what I'm doing and then break it down into as simple steps as possible. I've found that this makes it easier, but it does take longer

First Yokai fighter looks stunning! And the hat is just absolutely golden highlight for him. Thanks for the explanation on how to make a hat like that. GS sculpting is clearly not just about the gs sculpting skills, but also about creative use of other materials or salvaging existing models. The model is very nice, but the hat just gives me the "I want that!" feeling. *adds nippon maneater with strawhat in the endless project pool*

@Wilson, wow that's an amazing army, who would have thought you could make a majority pink colour scheme work.
@Loran, yer I try to think of it in layers and just work my way outwards, it gets hard when an inner lay laps round onto an outer one though.
@Pirk, that hat... took me a week to figure out how to do it, sometimes its the simple things that really get you.
@Mastero, thanks mate, the hobby bug has me again so I'm on a role.
@Beastkiller, haha I'm not fooling anyone with my sketches, keep it simple I say.
I started on the Oni's skin today, spent a good few hours getting it right. Unfortunately as always the photos accentuate the bad things and make it look average:
I used a wet palette for the first time and it worked wonders, I'll probably use it for everything for now on. It pushes out the drying time of the paints hugely.
A bit more work got done on the Shojo as well, I roughly finished his feet. They still need a bit of smoothing though:
I'm looking forward to finishing this guy so I can paint him, there's a few techniques I'm aching to try.

I've said it before, so I wont keep banging your drum, but your GS work is excellent and these models look awesome. Keep them coming as each post is just as awesome as the last, one of the best army themes/ builds I have seen with models that are executed brilliantly. Just awesome IMO

@Loran. The right tools definitely help a lot, my cloth has definitely gotten better since I bought those silicone clay shapers.
Just one pic tonight, unfortunately I left it till dark to take the photo so the only light source is my lamp. Good progress on the Shojo, all he really needs is a wrap for his hammer shaft and his left arm attached. I changed the pose from the concept drawing, giving him a little sake' jar in his left hand. It's hard to tell but he's holding it really delicately with just 1 finger and thumb:
I'm also getting there with the painting of the Oni, he should be done in the next few days. I still have him and the Shojo to paint before I start sculpting the next ogre.

Dedled; I don't know what else I can say! The greenstuff work is brilliant, the detailing is virtually flawless....looking at your work inspires me to go off and get a damn site better at my own. When I look at these models you are creating, then look at my own, it gives me a direction to move in with a benchmark of how good the finished product should look. IMO you are truly a gifted craftsman with the GS. Handing out Gnoblars just doesn't cut how super impressed I am by this army. G_H

Wow thanks man, that's kind of you. You don't give yourself enough credit though, you'd be surprised what you could do. I reckon just jump into the deep end and try scratchbuilding something, it's probably the best way to get better.

So I spent a good 4 or 5 hours painting today, and managed to finish up my Oni. Only a single teaser pic tonight though, Ill take a few good ones tomorrow in the sunlight.

Yep! I have the start of an Ogre army but nothing too advanced yet. Started with the idea of an Arabyan army, flirted with switching it over to a Nippon theme, then ended up switching back to Araby, and eventually the project got put on the back burner. Obviously the Nippon theme stuck in my mind! Cherry blossom stuff I'm doing for the WoC could probably fit with Dedled's army if he were so inclined.
And speaking of Dedled's army (which I hope we would be, is his thread after all), seriously gorgeous work on the Oni! The hat turned out amazingly, and the basework is great. Definitely looking forward to seeing more pics.

@Noisy Assassin. Hey mate, thanks for the comments. I spent a long time looking at your army, absolutely amazing stuff. One of the most well executed themes Ive seen. I actually bought a citadel tree set for my wood elves army, but in a spur of the moment act of stupidity threw out all the tree tops because I only wanted the trunks
Alright, so time for some better pictures. One of these days Ill get a proper camera and make a nice mini studio so I can take proper photos.
This guy won't be the only Oni that I do so I won't do a full lore write up like I plan on doing for the rest. This one is more of a mix of my favourite things from the Japanese culture:
Ill do up a bit of write up on his gear (another idea stolen from Lew, but I really enjoyed reading his).
Clothing. When I was painting him up I decided to go with dull earthy tones for all his clothing and equipment, with a few items of his gear being the pop. The photos dont show the clothing too well as I tried a really subtle highlighting method covered with a few glazes.
Hat. That hat was originally a nightmare for me to make, but despite that turned out exactly as I wanted it too. I highlighted it with a series of lines to emulate the straw its made from. It might not look like it but theres around 8 highlights in it, each one was quite watered down so they dont overpower those beneath.
Katana. The first NMM Ive tried, not great but gets the idea across. I did NMM because my GW metallics went . wrong, the colours all separated. The thing I was tossing up last night was whether I should paint a pattern on the scabbard at the moment its a bit lost in his black pants, Id love to hear your thoughts on the idea.
Mon. Mon are the symbols that families use on their clothing, houses, sashimono, pretty much everything. If you look at old pictures of samurai youll see them everywhere. This guy has his on the back of his jacket, its a stylised eye. I wanted a simple symbol that I can use to tie the army together (Im not great at detailed freehand). I cut out the diamond from greaseproof paper wet it and stuck it where I wanted it, tracing around it with paint.
Wraps. Along with the Mon, Im going to try incorporate wraps onto every ogre in the force. This guy has them on his wrists, ankles and around his Bo.

Ok, so my amazement at your modelling and painting skills aside, I would actually agree with the idea of putting a pattern on the scabbard/ sheath of the Katana. Maybe the symbol on his back (the family symbol?) as this would/ could tie the colours together. Just my thoughts though, if you do absolutely nothing it will still be an excellent model with an A1 paint job!

First of all, thanks to G_H for the sheath idea. I tried a few different things and adding that mon to it definitely tied it together a bit more... but it definitely needed a bit extra:

Top notch man, can't say anything that hasn't already been said. It looks great, The cheery blossoms on the katana with the red detail on the handle is probably my favourite part, brings good colour to the greys and neutral tones.
When you start to realize you can make money off these as beautiful man-eater models or any character or lord for that matter. Let me know, I want to be first in line.
That fighting beside G_H's skaven man-eater would be pretty sharp in my man-eater ranks just saying...

Oh man, that painted Ogre is stunning! I especially like the pink flower theme you painted on the sword scabbard and the symbol on the back. As I said, it's these little details that really bring the model to life
The new model is really starting to get his groove going. I'm loving the amount of detail you're sculpting onto every model (apparently ). I really can't wait to see this fella finished and painted, as the first one is really inspired and this guy's following strongly

Your Oni ogre is stunning. If there would be a drooling smiley, I'd use it right now. I really like earthly color themes in general. And this fella is no exception, he is very balanced, smooth and all. With just right amount of bright spots to brighten him up. Hat really looks like real straw hat!
You raised your bar for this army quite high right from the beginning! But looking at Shojo, I believe you can keep us shocked with your updates.
Just don't forget to post wip ogres, they are very educational.

Honest opinion of that sheath, it definitely works. The fact that it's pink doesn't really affect anything it fits with the culture. Definitely stick to it

Me gusta! I obviously appreciate the pink flowers on the scabbard, huge fan of pink on black for the Nippon theme. Oni was executed wonderfully from start to finish. On the trees, it might be worth asking around if you want to use the GW leaves as blossoms. Most people agree with you that they're generally worthless, but a lot of gamers have a hard time throwing out any bits, even if they never plan to use them! I was able to snag some extra leaves from a friend that way. Otherwise I know I've run across at least one model railroad company that makes pink foliage. Could dig around when I'm at home and see if I still have that bookmark if you'd like.
And looking forward to seeing the Shojo get some paint.

Dedled; it works dude, and it works really well. Painting on the scabbard is exceptional and it is much better than what I had visualized.
I don't really know where I can go with comments and compliments; I have given you them all from Gnoblars to my absolute and utter admiration and adoration. Your work actually rocks my world and makes me want to be better at what we all do. I love your models, love the theme, love the painting...what the hell else can I say!
The one thing I could plead with you is this; Please, please, please consider making a cheeky extra model and give it away in a competition. Please! Everyone (and I actually mean everyone) would be so, so stoked to own one of these phenomenal models, please consider sharing the wealth!

Got the skin done after a marathon late night painting sees, which I probably won't do again. Natural light is so much better to paint with. I painted the skin with way too much difference between the basecoat and highlights so I used about 4 glazes to calm it down a bit:

Skin turned out well. I like the rudy pink in the face and hands. And having painted the occasional triangle pattern on my goblins, I feel your pain doing a patterned cloth like that.

I think I would have gone blind or amputated my own hand painting the pattern on the cloth there. The paint job on this guy is exquisite. Lovely model, can I ask; Did you re-model the nose on the Ogre? Also, how many of these guys are you going to make? That is to say; how large is this unit going to be?

@NoisyAssassin. Ah good, Im glad the pink washes came out good. It was 'interesting' doing that pattern, especially as theres more material around his knees than waist so it didnt all line up properly.
@Poly. Thanks. As for the pattern it was relatively easy, it just took a very long time going over everything fixing the lines about 6 times haha.
@Cadwyr. Thanks bud.
@G_H. I almost lost it and smashed the ogre a few times haha. No, the nose is stock, but the cheeks are chubbied up a bit. Well I have ideas for 5 Ironguts, 6 Bulls, Gorger, Giant, 2 Mournfang, some Gnoblars, a Butcher and the Oni Ive already done who might be the Tyrant. This guys an Irongut. So theres plenty to go.

Shojos are a Japanese sea spirit with red hair and face, who have a fondness for alcohol. They have been known to give out sake with supernatural healing properties. They are generally friendly and help humans.
Hammer. While not particularly Japanese, I wanted something to offset the other softness and obesity of the Shojo. So I gave him a massive, brutal hammer. Its not quite finished yet, because Im waiting for something to arrive in the mail, but in the spirit of moving the project along Ill post the pics up anyway.
Bottle/jar. The bottle on his belt is modelled on an old sake jug I found on the internet, the symbol on it reads sake. If anyone reading this has drunk sake at a Japanese bar or restaurant they will probably recognise the one in his fingers, it has the traditional wrap around the neck (Im a huge fan of piping hot sake, nothing beats it).
Skirt. Originally he was going to be wearing only a sumo belt, but my skills arent quite there yet so I gave him something to cover his upper legs. The armour plates were me just tired and mucking round with some left over greenstuff, which just happened to look alright when I was done. The pattern on the cloth is the clans Mon, many many times and was a complete pain in the arse to do. Its a nice change from the earthy tones of the oni though and gave me some much needed practice at freehand.

Shojo turned out wonderfully! Paint scheme came together, and the cloth provides a very nice contrast to the warm skin tones. On the hammer though...I didn't even realize that it was a hammer. I thought it was a club resting on a block of stone (which I liked). The join between the haft and the head is probably the weak link here in terms of making it look like one solid weapon. What is it that you're waiting to arrive for it?
Oh, and I did manage to dig up that link to the pink foliage material. I never ended up ordering any, but if you're into this sort of tree-making material it looks just about perfect for a Nippon army: http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tls/tls345.htm

@Loran. Sure is going to be a bellower, the mouth is a big part of what it is as well. This ones heavily adapted to suit my needs though.
@Pirk. Well the Japanese spirit is a given, but you're right with the faceless bit as well.
@G_H. The face of the Oni I did is loosely based off a Hannya mask, but I do have plans for an actual mask further down the line.
@Gutlord. Bellower yes, I don't really have an order I want to do them in. Mainly the easier ones first, so as I get better I can do the harder ones.

And really, with these "easier ones", as you put it, looking so good, I can't wait to see the harder ones that are still to come! I mean these fellas are already intricately detailed and very personalized, so it can only get better

I'll keep coming back as long as you keep making more of this stuff Seriously though, you combine two things that I'm really interested in: toy soldiers and the Japanese culture / mythology So this is right up my alley...
The Doro is looking great! I really like how you did the missing arm, and the head For some reason the third picture in your last post cracks me up, as the leg looks so small compared to the rest of the body Great work though!
The basket pole looks good. I need to try something like that for my own conversions. Up to now I've not used staves or poles as I've struggled with making them look good, but that picture gave me a couple of ideas to try out

And the rokurokubi turned out great! Colors all look very good. The white of the banner and the green of the shirt seem a little flat though. Is that just the pictures? Or part of rushing a little to get it done so you could move on?

@Beastkiller & JJ. Thanks guys. Its just a bit of wire drilled into the centre of a cut off arm with some greenstuff covering it to look like a bone.
@Loran. I know exactly what you mean about not using poles, I'm the same. I can't get a plain long stick to look any good, so cover it with something and you don't have too. Legs have a little more flesh added as well.
@Assassin. I actually think it's mainly the pictures , personally I was really happy with the banner but I think you may need to see it up close to get the shading.
@G_H. Thanks mate. Can't wait to paint him.

@Disaster. I hope so as well, if I get it right hopefully I'll put people off eating for a while
@Loran. This guy doesn't have a lot of embellishments so those rotting patches really help break up the flatness off the skin a bit. They were really easy, just carve off some plastic and replace it with Gstuff, then push holes in and pull it round a little to make it raggity, I actually think that the effect would look good on normal ogres as a battle damage kind of effect.
@Dreadboi. Thanks alot mate. Thankyou for the great tutorials. Haha tell me about it, you don't get much cooler than those 2 things.
@JJ. I'm glad you noticed that and that you can differentiate between the 2. I had to do a little anatomy research to see if there was actually a visible difference between them.
@Ibis. Thanks, I can't wait to paint him, out of all the Yokai I have planned this one is the probably the one I look forward to painting the most.
I only have a single pic for the moment, but I hope to have him finished by the end of the day. So for now just a little WIP teaser:

^ Agreed. The greenstuff work kind of boggles my mind. I literally can't make a single thing with it, even after the amazing tutorials everyone has made.. I even tried to make a rope, came out looking snake hit by a car.
