Sklaar's Pilgrims (And an Ork or two!)

original thread ↗

Hello! Welcome to my Gnoblog.
Introduction
I started collecting an Ogre Kingdoms about 5 months ago; I have to say this site was instrumental in my decision of which WHF army to amass. Progress has been slow to be honest, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the painting and modelling side. I have some 40k experience but sadly have never played a single game of WHF! But this isn’t an issue as I find that I can supplement the painting with the reading of the Rules, fluff and the superb tactical insights on this site.

Anyway, I’ll provide some of the fluff of my army, the potential list and set up and obviously the images of progress and finished miniatures.

Fluff
The premise:
Sklaar the Feeder is a Slaughtermaster intent on making his pilgrimage to the Great Maw. Along his journey he inadvertently acquires more Ogres to follow in the pilgrimage to their (un)Holy site, fulfilling their lifetime passage.

Sklaar, not a leader by nature, promises his pilgrims two things; that they will be well fed (or as close to it as is possible with Ogres) and that all plunder will be distributed equally. Make no mistake, Sklaar is no charitable Ogre, but his single mindedness and absolute dedication to reaching the Great Maw has clouded his lust for Booty!

Sklaar’s pilgrimage is slightly different than the average. During a raid on a nomadic human village, Sklaar had the vast steel village cooking pot welded into a colossal ladle. Sklaar claims that during the post-raid feast he saw a vision of the great Maw form within the boiling blood of the Ladel’s contents. Sklaar’s moment of clarity dictates his current reason for the pilgrimage; he believes, deludedly,  that if his Ladle ‘collects’ the hearts and brains of every general he defeats along his voyage, this delicacy will prove to be a sufficient offering to the Great Maw to quell the gnawing hunger of the Ogres (It is of course not possible!)

This is still a work in progress to be honest.

Army
So far I have amassed; 2 Battalions, a Tyrant (which I’ll probably run/convert as a bruiser BSB), a Slaughtermaster (Sklaar) and an Ironblaster and 48 Gnoblars from the Battalion. I will hopefully get some Sabretusks in the near future and a Fire belly.

This is the part I am still slightly obliviously to. My plan is to have a mainly ‘fun’, flootsloggin’, Ogre army supporting the fluff that they are on a pilgrimage.

I’m thinking for a 2-2.5K army I’d Ideally like to run two large blocks;
One with 10 Bull’s, SM and the BSB. The other with 11 Ironguts and the Firebelly. Then 6 Leadbelchers, the Ironblaster , two separate Sabretusks and A stupidly large unit of Gnoblars if needed.

Leaving me 5 left over Ogres. I plan to convert these to Maneaters. I find them both versatile within their rules and highly exciting to be able to convert and all the fun you could have with them!
But I am unsure of whether to;
-   have them as a unit of Nurgle warped Maneaters (Would bring a nice thematic visual to the army, and I think the Nurgle converting wouldn’t be too difficult)
-   Or, Have each one individualy themed; Khorne, Nurgle, Beer drinking (Standing on Gnoblar supported kegs!), Pirate, Crown wearing regal type, Tzeentch, Slaanesh, the potential list goes on!
Either way, advice/tips would be welcomed.

^ Agreed! The Slaughtermaster looks excellent all that blood and offal....very nice! The leadies are looking good to; be it intentional or not their faces do look like they have been in the vicinity of a very hot cannon.
Keep up the good work.

Ogre look good! Looking forward to more.

And a few of the army so far:

Oh man, these are amazing mate! :D

What did you use for the snow? That looks really good, and I'm planning on giving my Ogres snowy bases as well, so I'm interested in learning the different methods people went about their snow bases :)

I would also love to know what you are currently using for your snow bases? I am using GW's Snow Flock, and it simply isn't good enough for the job; at least with fewer than three coats...

Your army is looking fantastic so far, particularly Sklaar himself! :) My one criticism - if it could be called that - is to be mindful of mould lines on your models. There are one or two visible on your models :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Thanks JJ & Loran!

The mould lines look awful, but I seem to forget them every time!

The snow bases I cannot take credit for, I got them from;
http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/details-8-ways-to-base-with-snow.html

But it is such a simple way to get, in my opinion decent results. As a basic tip make sure that you also sprinkle Bi-Carb on the snow areas after you have applied the pva/Bicarb paste. That way you get the 'Cruchy' snow effect and it helps bind the PVA paste.

Skived off work a bit today to start on a basic presentation board:

Hopefully it'll look better than this awful job i did on paint (Hangs head in shame)

Gnoblog: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=28100.0
That's gonna look sweet I'd love to make something like that
Thanks for the link; I will check it out! :)

As for the display board, it looks like a fantastic idea, and some very creative use of Paint there! :P Look forward to seeing it come together!

The display board/ terrain piece concept looks great...I am really looking forward to seeing it come to life.
keep posting.

Thanks for the tips on the snow, I'll have to give this a go :)

A post by JJ inspired me to dust off an old project this week(I think he said something along the lines that having a variety of projects on the go meant that he didn't get bored/resent 'having' to complete units etc).

The project in question is an Ork Looted wagon, I loved the fluff that they simply steal another armies' tank or such and then give it an Orkish makeover! I am not delighted with the rusting effect, i think i got a bit carried away, and i didn't have any rusty pigment, but overall it isn't too bad.

The Chaos Marine thingy i started with and all of the 'Extras'

The Cannon head

The Orky panels and rivets

Undercoated

1st Coat

Finished! (Well, i still have to do the dirtied wheel tracks)

With some Bad Moons

I'm glad that something I did/said has inspired someone! Just happy to help people, and if showing you that having multiple projects to keep things fresh worked, my job here is done :)

The Looted Wagon looks ace! :) I have always had a soft spot for the Bad Moons, and the rust effect is fantastic!

Yeah, numerous projects can give you more options of what to do. Every now and then painting monstrous infantry may become dull, so then some smaller models might be what you want to paint :D

The looted wagon looks great! Exactly the kind of thing that an Ork would come up with. Top notch work! :)

Loving that looted tank, very Orky. keep it up! more projects means more posts and more pictures; this keeps me very happy; loads to read and look at!

Nah! We've covered this before somewhere;

The way around selling the dice is simple. You sell raffle tickets. The Ticket costs the same price as the making of the dice (inc materials, the total cost basically), then everyone buys a raffle ticket and "wins" some dice.
If, lets say, there are as many tickets as prizes....well, you get the idea.

So (not for the first time) I would happily "buy" a raffle ticket with the hope of "winning" some Free Dice.  8)

Ahoy!

It has been a while since i last posted in my Gnoblog (Mainly ue to work being hectic :( ) but i have a few things I've been working on over the last month or so.

Orks

With the immenent release of the New 40k ork codex I thought I'd finish off my HQ choices.
Big Mek:

Warboss:

And my side project which has been a mainly scratch built dark mechanicum army. The centrepiece will be the scratch built Forgefiend.

Rhino:

Converted SM's and an Obliterator:

Forgefiend:

Hot Damn! That 'fiend is looking awesome mate. The Orks are looking great too, but that 'fiend really does take the trophy! Excellent work there, can't wait to see him get some paint!

G_H
Ok, so I have no idea what a forgefiend is, but I ADORE this model. The Adeptus have always allowed for fantastic conversion and model concepts due to not being too specific with their background as of yet. I love this guy and your great work with greenstuff really shows through on this guy!

Ok, so I have no idea what a forgefiend is, but I ADORE this model.

It's one of the options in one of the new(ish) chaos kits...think it's just guns that make it a Forgefiend and not a Maulfiend...but I could be wrong. Pic of original model at bottom for ref.

In seriousness though, absolutely amazing stuff pumping out of this gnoblog. truly stunned with your painting and work. Aces and Spades all around.

I havent forgot about those dice either..

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Thank you all for the positive responces! Greatly appreciated 

RE: the dice!
The dice have been a bit of a conundrum to be honest. I have produced some more, where the graphic is far better ‘centred’ and the overall aesthetics have improved, but to be honest it is a frustratingly inconsistent process with occasionally inconsistent outcomes.
The main issue is that once laser etched some dice leave a residue which I can colour over, some do not and some dice self-colour because of the heat applied (as if you were burning a piece of red plastic it would turn yellow/orange) I am unsure if this is due to different types of dice being different polymers or the setting I have the laser cutter at…

Either way, when I get home tonight I will post some images of the better ones and if people are still interested in buying some they can PM me 
Gnoblog: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=28100.0
As promised, here are some images of the dice which I've managed to produce so far!

Red Dice without 'dot' colouring.

Red Dice with Black 'dots'

Green dice with Black 'dots'

Green dice with Ork glyph.

Ahoy!

Been a while, I've been busy finishing off some Ironguts, but I forgot to photograph them, so i'll get it sorted for tomorrow.
However, with the release of 40k 7th I have reverted to getting some Orky stuff finished.

Killa Kans

Here is an Imperial Bunk i made at work

Finally, with Psychics getting their own phase in 7th, I am quite excited to try out a Weirdboy in my future 40K games. However, I don't have a model and to be honest I am not a huge fan of the GW one. So I thought I'd try an convert one. He's quite WHF Shaman-esque, but i've balanced that by sticking him on a junk heap! The Ork glyph is intended to be a mask but I am not 100% delighted with it.Hopefully under coated and painted over the next few days.

Gnoblog: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=28100.0
Wow mate!  :o

That weirdboy looks awesome! The other stuff looks really good too, but for me the weirdboy is the man of the match; can't wait to see him painted!

Have a gnoblar for you work on this guy!

Been a while since I updated this, as usual work and RL seem to rear their ugly heads at the most annoying time...And I promise the next post will have some Ogres! Just ordered a few Mournfang!

Anyway, here are my under-coated Dwarf team (Karak Keg catchers!)for a local Blood Bowl league.

Blitzers and Runner (The Blitzers are holding a frothy tankard which is a detail I particularly like!)

I decided to make my own Dwarven themed blood bowl pitch. My biggest project to date. I'd like to say I'm enjoying it but it's a fair old slog to get through all the stuff i want to do. To date I've cut 97 stone squares, only 263 to go....

One of six dugouts

Scoreboard (Which sort of looks like a huge mechanical gear is poking out! and it works  :D )

Brass end Zone which reads 'end zone' in Dwarven Runes!

Have some sweet Kegs coming from the bay too!

Stunning paintjobs and amazing conversions!!!! :D

I love the Forgefiend. That model is EPIC! :) A truly stunning conversion. Gets that dark and chaotic Mechanicum look perfectly. Can't wait to see it painted! :D And the Orks are awesome! A really crisp painting style works very well with the Ork models.

And the Blood Bowl pitch is looking great. Can't wait to see it finished, with all the extra points of interest, such as the scoreboard :D Keep it up! :)
