Hi all.
Played 2 games last night. First game was against Lizardmen:
Oldblood with blade of tzunki and various other trinkets
Skink Priest lvl 2
4 Kroxigor
16 Saurus with Hand weapon and Shield
16 Saurus with spears
10 skinks
10 skinks
Stegadon
3 Salamanders
4 Jungle Swarms
I played (in both games):
Tyrant with Tenderiser, wyrdstone necklace, luck gnoblar, Longstrider
Butcher with bangstick and dispel scroll
butcher with skullmantle and dispel scroll
2 x 3 bulls with bellower
2 x 4 ironguts with bellower
8 trappers
2 x 2 leadbelchers
scraplauncher
gorger
bull rhinox standard bearer with warbanner
The first game was played on a table with too much terrain. We both had problems setting up units in viable positions, and then we found ourselves mired in wierd bottlenecks throughout the game. He set up in a reasonably standard formation with large blocks of saurus acting as anchor for the support units. The stegadon took on flank of his army, but the other one was very poorly held. I think he thought that a large building and a wood would give him enough time to shore it up if he needed, but he did not bank on me setting up my bull rhinox and marching it for a few turns to exploit the gap. I set up with a line of bulls and ironguts with butchers and leadbelchers behind in support. The tyrant joined a centrally placed irongut unit to try and influence where the oldblood would be heading.
I lost first turn (as always) and he moved his units towards me cautiously, confident that he could afford to hold back due to superior shooting. He moved his salamanders to block my rhinox's way, which pleased me because I wanted to see what level of damage it could withstand. It was the first time I had fielded one. His magic was low with one guy, but he got off the comet with a double six! I had to move like a mofo. In my turn, and in nost part because the comet did not land, I determined to hold back with most units and reveal my butchers and leadbelchers to be able to use their range. I used most of my powerdice to dispel the comet, but not before I cast rockbiter on the iron guts and tyrant. The butcher paid for his gift with a wound. I moved the rhinox directly in front of the salamanders, daring him to do his worst. With T5 and a 3+ save, I was sure I would be there for the charge. With no charges and little magic, I tried a shot with the scraplauncher and it deviated well away from any target.
His next turn was quiet. His shooting had not really lived up to much so far, so he was naturally reticent to charge a line of angry ogres. He moved to within my charge range, daring me to charge his tarpits. His salamanders and skinks moved to shoot. The rhinox took a thankfully low 16 shoots from the sallies and 2 wounds which he saved. I lost a few bulls to massed poison shooting, which is always going to be an issue for ogres. I passed the panic test and readied myself for a mass charge. In my next turn I charged the rhinox, a bull unit, the tyrant and a unit of 4 ironguts into various targets. The salamanders were too far friom the general to use his leadership in rallying, so he had to hold and hope to get a few wounds off me. My magic caused a skink unit to run in panic and buffed a few ogres for strength bonuses. The leadbelchers unloaded into the kroxigors, killing one. Not great, but better than nothhing I suppose. I won the combats, but the ironguts and tyrant had failed to remove enough jungle bases. Still, my plan was to sucker in the oldblood to give him a kicking. The tyrant needed some new crocodile skin shoes. The rhinox won combat and ran down the salamanders, moving him around the big terrain obstruction, but still out of charge unfortunately.
He took the bait next turn and charged in the oldblood unit and his kroxigors. The terrain prevented him from charging in more stuff, as it had me the turn before. He turned his steg to face the oncoming threat of the rhinox, but I knew that if i won the combat i would have a shot on getting the beast with the tyrant before it could block my rider. His mage was busy running from my gorger, and thanks to a water featuer, had left the hungry chap well behind. 2 units of skinks poured poison darts into an irongut unit who was stuck due to terrain. They killed 2 but the unit held. In the combats, i challenged the oldblood to combat and he accepted. He got 6 str 6 attacks (sotek mark) but only hit with half and wounded once, which i failed to save. I then tenderised him to make a nice turtle soup later on. The other combats went in my favour via some good rolling and i broke his units, but i was held by an annoying jungle swarm.
In my turn i moved up the free units to charge any of his units that would rally on his turn. The rhinox was march blocked so made a normal move - ever closer to the flank of the saurus spear unit. I reloaded the leadbelchers, hoping to have a shot at something next turn. My gorger continued to chase the priest. He must have really set his heart on eating the little fella. The annoying jungle base finally bit the dust, and it claimed an ogre before it passed. I could now sort out some charges on my next turn, provided he managed to rally. At this point the game was clearly mine. In his turn he managed to rally units and awaited my charge. The stegadon had changed its mind about the rhinox and had moved toward my tyrant. His skinks continued to rain down death of the trapped ironguts, and one unit fought off the predations of the trappers who had been ineffectually shooting at them for a few turns.
In my turn I charged the tyrant at the steg and the rhinox in the side of the saurus unit. My other ogres engaged the krox unit or moved up to get a line for the next turn. The tyrant robbed the skink crew of a platform and that was that. The rhinox comfortably beat the sarus who fled and were run down. At this point the game was over. He had never played ogres before and had been too cautious all game, fearing their hitting power. He was not yet aware that they can rarely take a charge from a ranked unit or from a largish krox unit. The ogres could now settle down for a good feed!
I then played a game versus:
lvl 4 gob wiz with sizzla's
lvl 2
ork hero x 2 one in chariot, one on boar in boarboys unit
20 black orcs
20 orcs
40 night gobbos with fanatic
orc chariot
2 spear chukkas
doomdiver
giant
4 snotling bases
7 boarboys with banner of butchery
This game report will be short as the game was turned by just 2 spells. The thing with the O&G list is that when your luck is in, you can do crazy things. His luck was in. Turn one he pulled off an irresistable foot spell which he rolled sixes for 4/7 times. he killed off two leadbelcher units, took 3 wounds each from 2 butchers, killed 3 iron guts from various units and put the rhinox to 4 wounds. This was all before i moved! He then hit with both chukkas, rolling 2 sixes for the d3 wounds to be added to the rhinox! I was 400 points down before i even got a turn! I asked him if he was playing a sea guard list in disguise, which he laughed at. I wasn't feeling so cheery myself though.
I managed to rein him in for another few turns. At one point, I had broken through his lines and pursued out of his charge arcs. I had killed his general and was on course for charges on unit flanks and gobbo wizards. It looked good for me. When he miscast his waagh spell I was relieved, but then he roll a 6 and got it with irresistable force. His repositioned units charged my ogre uniys and wiped them out! Left with the prospect of fighting with a few characters and a gorger, I accepted the inevitable. What can you do when crazy orc **** hits the fan? Ask for a rematch next week!
