Michael John's Pirates! Maneater Captain and more!

Hi everyone,

So a few weeks ago i started an Ogre kingdoms army! I always loved the models and my O&G army is nearly finished so why not collect some of these guys. I want to go with a sort of piratey-theme, something i could never do with my O&G (though it is possible). So, these are my first painted ogres: Some mournfang cavalry!

They look great.

I cannot wait to see these come together, and I have some great ideas that I will share later, and when G_H finally jumps into this ( if you reading this G_H. Post that giant with the anchor please) he will post up a giant model that would rock this theme.

And you can use the ogre man-eater pirate a a tyrant or bruiser. So badass!
- The fella I played with at my FLGS was doing pirate ogres as well and they looked like they were coming along great, I would try doing some greenstuff bandanas and stuff too.

After a bit of work and green-stuffing, my first ogre characters are done! I've made myself a slaughtermaster, Tyrant and a BSB. I am also thinking of getting the pirate maneater, i really want some maneaters in my army and i think he would be a great captain for them. These are my first greenstuff hat-projects so i'd like to know what you think!

The slaughtermaster, i 'borrowed' this idea from another slaughtermaster i saw on the internets. I did some extra work on his apron so it did'nt look as 'new' as it does on the photo.

So now i'm looking for some awsome names for the character models, if you have any suggestions i'd love to hear and maybe even use them!

I just did up a pirate man-eater on my gnoblog, go take a look at him, might give you some inspiration for your tyrant/briuser! Looking forward to more bud.

I did see that one Conogre, He looks very nice! I'm planning to get that model for a unit of maneaters, of course he will be the captain of the unit.

Thanks for all the awsome tips and ideas people, there are some really awsome Ogre models hidden in all the gnoblogs.

I am really liking these guys; especially the Standard Bearer.. he is just so full of character (with a grizzled face like a wasp chewing bulldog!). I have always like the pirate theme and these guys are looking great.
More pictures would always be welcome, can't wait to see more of these guys.

These guys are awesome! I'm also digging the standard bearer very much, hook handed and all. Very pirateish. Tyrant/bruiser being second favorite.

Solid painting, good looking striped pants. I'm really looking forward to see these guys based and in formation!

Any ideas, not really, basic pirate things like parrots, rum and wooden legs?

Oh I'm sure you already know about these guys but I'm just gonna throw them out anyways. Titan forge makes a set of pirate ogres, they have mournfangs on alligators, a character pirate guy, and ogres with old scool diving helmets on. Just off the top of my head I haven't looked in awhile. It'd be worth a look if u haven't seen.
Also a cool idea for a stonehorn or thundertusk depending on how far you're willing to go with the theme is to scratch build a pirate ship that would be awesome lol

I've seen the Titan Forge ogres, my local games store just got some in and i might even pick up some of those models. The peg leg and the boat ideas sound great, i will try out some of them in the future, maybe when i'll be making some maneaters. In the meantime, I've finished the final bulls and promised some pictures, here they come!

You might see my giant in the background on some pictures, he is part of my orcs and goblins army. It is quite an old one already but i'm not planning on repainting/piratifying him, my mother painted it for me a few years back

And finally, my tuskie! I did not want to use the giant crossbow for this model so i changed the backrider into a much more 'piratey' ogre captain riding his giantic beast, the front dude will be holding a rare parrot-vulture from the lustrian jungles.

A great theme and amazing models! I've always been a fan of this kind of pirates, so these are really nice. The fella with the pipe is probably my favourite out of the bunch

  I've got a few pirate hats I've made. I'll try and find them and I'll show my method.

At last, another update! I've been really busy with school the last weeks and now the internshipweeks are just around the corner so im going to have time to paint! I just finished my Ironblaster, the tuskie will be the next project!













Also had a few games with my ogres, some of then did'nt go as planned. I often play against my friends lizardmen and got my ass handed because of some minor mistakes (forgetting my scouting maneaters, magic items, banners and some small rules) so i'm going to try a heavens slaughtermaster next time, any tips for that one?

And i love me some internshipweeks! I've had a lot of free time these last days and could do a lot of work on my thundertusk! I actually finished it! Well, the tuskie itself that is, i have'nt started at the ogres (yet). So, they might get done later this week.

Nice work there, like the verdigras on the Ironblaster, it looks very battle hardened. the pants/ trousers on the ogre look good too.

Oh dear, it is too long since i posted something! Good thing i have a few weeks 'off' from studying, painting time! So, as i was browsing trough the many Ogres of the ogre stronghold and beyond i thought to myself; My ogres do look a bit... plain, no tattoo's and such, why not paint some to get it all started! So out came the painting box and the ogres form the cabinet and i started to let my fantasy do the work....

(the pictures are made with my phone, i could not find the charger for the camera so they might be a bit brighter as the old pictures on the blog)
It started out quite plain with my ironblaster, mournfang leader and Slaughtermaster....


On the mournfang leader there is a bit of progress, i could make animals and such shapes too, think about your savage orcs michael! You gave them a lot of warpaint, let's try that again.





And, of course, the Tyrant should not be forgotten. He actualy took me a while to give his tattoo, but i do think it is worth the effort! The 'mom' heart could'nt fit and i was too tired to paint on so i changed it to 'ma', even pirate captains love their mothers (at least these ogres do)


So, i also ordered the pirate maneater for the army! I have used some maneaters in my few games with the army (lots of wins, a few massacres against me) and i LOVE the way they play. I'm also planning of picking up another box of bulls next week to turn the one unit from 3 to 6 and convert me some maneaters. The plans i have for them right now is one with a HUGE sword, one lustrian maneater (i play against a lot of lizardmen, might need to raid my friend's bitbox) and an Orcy one. I havent forgotten the tusk crew, they will be painted up soon!

Love all the tatts mate, they are coming up well.

Some advice on improving the striped pants in case you are interested.
What I did was put a thin black line down the side of each stripe to help give some definition.
Looking at your tatto work your brush skills look good enough.

Allright! I got myself some maneaters, a new bsb and a new Slaughtermaster! I've been quite busy converting them and stuff, so expect some pictures tomorrow!

Maneater! Heck yes, can't wait!

Not just one maneater, but 5 of them! No more talking, let's get to the pictures!



The first one, a lustrian Maneater, he will be the bellower of the unit. In my last game my maneaters held up an entire horde of saurus warriors, they deserve this! He is equipped with 2 hand weapons, (and many more on the back) and has a nasty razordon-head for some extra punch.


Yes! My favourite GW ogre model, the pirate maneater. This dude is the reason i'm making piratey ogres (they even have a name now!) If i'm using a tyrant (a rare occasion) this man can be the general, otherwise he is the captain of the maneaters. Both  the two handweapons and a great weapon on this dude, depending on how i want to play.



One of the orcish maneaters, This one has spend some time with the Black orcs. I might give him some more armour because of this, i should look up a guide on making greenstuff armour.



The other Orcish maneater. He is wielding a great stabba for extra slashiness (it will be used as a great weapon). Because you might need something light boarding ships, he also has a nice sword. Also, he has a little pet snotling pulling his hair, i had him hiding in the big bitbox and thought it would be a nice addition.

But Michael, you are missing a standard bearer! No i'm not, i'm using the "old' BSB for this unit. No pirate unit without a hook! Then you need a new BSB! I know, i found this gem at my local games store:

He also got a nice razordon head, just cuz' i play against lizardmen a lot. I love this model and i just had to get it, and this way he will get a lot of use.

Also, i have made a new slaughtermaster! The one i currently have is nice, but lacks a bit of pirate flavour. So i made this one!


On the seven seas you can't always keep meat around, so fish is a nice alternative. This fella is a champ in making (greenstuff) sushi to keep the deckhands going. I found the idea on this one on the Ogre gallery and i loved it, so thanks person who made a similair one! Maybe you are still around. But Michael, still nothing piratey about him exept a fishy smell! I have thought about that:

Yarr! He is one of the hooked pirates! As if a sword is'nt enough already, this fella gets a free nasty hook to the boot. As you can see, it's multipurpose.

Loving all these guys.
The pirate theme willl come across better when they are all together as a unit.
The black orc version was the one I struggled to guess off the pic. More armour would certainly help. I have found 0.5mm plasticard very handy for armour on my Mannies. As black orcs are "armed to da teeth" he may need a couple of weapon strapped to his back too
I actually thought your lizard man guy was the standard bearer carrying a back banner rather than weapons. Maybe a couple of green stuff straps to hold the weapons on (see GH's greenstuff tutorial) and have the weapons all sitting on slightly different angles would help?

Nice work my friend, I love these guys. The fish-head and sushi guy looks great (what is the fish head from?). I really like the orc maneater the monster weapon he has looks very menacing. I would have been tempted to put an orc shield on him as a gut plate, but he looks great as he is.
The Lizardman Maneater takes the trophy though, this guy looks the business. Great work on these guys; can't wait to see them with some paint on them.

Another small update! With a little extra bit, a small guide on how to make some awsome hats!

@warlordsteve, You are right, he is looking a bit naked for a black orc ogre. So, today i gave him a bit more punch:



He is a lot more 'armed to da deef' now. I also gave the lustrian maneater some straps:


I might add some leaves and paint them up like vines to get a bit of a 'jungle' effect.

@ Gnoblar_Herder: The fish-head is from the river troll set, i had it lying around and could not resist not to place it on him.

And now: A small guide on how to make some (pirate) hats! This works for all kinds of models, not just Ogres!

First, get yourself a good, wet pallet and a small ball of the greenstuff. It is quite hard to get a zoom on this one but i think you get the point. The bigger the ball, the bigger the hat! If you are going for a bandana, use a smaller ball.


After that, make them as flat and in the shape of a coin. Be sure to keep it moist, otherwise you will get fingerprints and sticky fingers.


If it is a flat coin, get your flat tool and loosen it with a sawing motion, you will get a nice, rounded piece of greenstuff. Make sure to dry off one side, you have to glue it in place on this side.


After that, you just place it on a head you want to behatted. After you put it on;

 use your fingers or tools to make the desired shape of hat/bandana. This is done by lifting the edges (hat) or flattening the disk around the heat and making a small "knot' at the back of the head. After a bit of practice you'll get the hang of it, if you cannot come up with any ideas, use the googles or look back in the gnoblog

I hope you enjoyed, there are a few more 'normal' bulls coming up to finish the other unit i already have lying around so stay tuned!

And i slapped some paint on some models the last few days! At last, i finished my thundertusk crew and got a gift for someone done.

I'm helping one of my neighbours getting into 40k and he is getting quite the army. So, i decided to paint him the new special edition speehs muhreen boss for his birthday, it is also the first space marine i painted myself.



But now to the ogres! I finished the crew for my thundertusk. The guy with the pipe was feeling a bid empty without smoke coming out, so i made him some smoke! This is the result:





I'm not that sure about giving them tattoos or not, i feel they are filled with stuff enough already and i can't come up with something at the moment. The next update might be on some painted maneaters or the new bsb!

Awesome job on the man-eaters!! Really love the lizard men one, those scales and stuff are going to bring so much colour and life.

Thundertusk riders are looking awesome. love the redder noses; makes them either look cold or slightly inebriated! I shall be stealing this to apply to a Maneater I am currently painting.

Whilst I am loathed to say this; The SM chap looks really good. The painting is exceptionally good work...pity it's wasted on something as dreary as a Space Marine; none-the-less I am sure the guy you have done him for will be stoked, and as I have said the paint job is excellent.

Mini update! I'm really busy working on my portfolio at the moment but i was able to find some time to slap some paint on my new slaughtermaster. He is far from done but i'm quite happy and proud of the result so far:



The apron took me a while but i think it looks awsome! First i had a little search for some japanese letters (kanji) and a nice picture for the fish. Half an hour later this came out! Maybe i'll do some extra work on him later this weekend, first i have to finish that document.

WELL DONE!!! free hand is looking aces! Also forgot to comment on your lovely pirate man-eater. He is by far my favourite model in the ogre line and I had an absolute blast painting him. Hopefully you get the same enjoyment. What always surprises me is how much bigger the ammeters are from normal ogres.

Oh my, it has been quite a while again but i found some time to paint! It is quite a budy month for me, making all kinds of portfolios, tests and essays. The slaughtermaster is (almost) done though! So, i am just going to leave this here.







He still has to get some tats and maybe a finishing touch on the sushiplate, but i think he came out quite nice!

@Conogre: I hope i might get to painting the pirate maneater(s) this weekend (it will be a 5 day one) but i also have some work from school lying around so that has to be done first

Awsome! I just bought myself some ironguts and a box of leadbealchers for about half the price! Of course, i can;t paint them before the maneaters are done. The point is, i want to pirateyfy the Ironguts but i am out if ideas. Maybe you guys know something! It would be apreciated!

Wooo! I found some time to start painting up one of my maneaters! I still have a lot to do but i want to do at least some painting on them every day, especcialy since i got another 12 extra ogres of all kinds ready to build.  So, WIP pictures will be posted!




So, today i made a start with the big banner-like thingies on his back (even though he will be the bellower). They will be filled up with gems (a part i LOVE to do on my eldar models) The razordonhead will be in the same colours as the ones my friend uses. I have no idea of how to the weapon yet but i'll find some. I had some trouble painting the gold as my paint was very, very thin.

Also, i got myself some saberwolves! One of my classmates mentioned my painting during drawing/art class and the teacher wants me to do some painting in the lessons. As long as i'm getting my points i am happy! Here is a little sneak peak (again, it is WIP). I really love the size of these doges, they are bigger as expected. They will have a highlight on the fur similair to my mournfang but with different base colours (which will be the next step)



I hope you guys enjoyed the new pictures, ill try to post something at least twice a week, inbetween all the jungles they will have to cut down to supply all the paper for my essays!

I just coul'nt find the motivation to do some schoolwork this afternoon so i did some painting! The first (second if you count the Banner) maneater is done!





So this maneater is based upon my friend's lizardmen. We play against each other a lot and actually started the game with each other. In earlyer times this 'feud' was shown using chopped off heads and such, i think this is much more subtle. The razordon's head is also painted in his sceme, because of the flash its not showing that good which is a shame.  I also changed the way i'm painting the stripes on the pants: this time i started with the white paint instead of the other way.

I was also able to finish one of the sabrewolves:



It is showing a bit bright (i really should find the charger for my camera) but i am quite happy with the way it turned out. I might chage his nose and the fur a bit on other (upcoming) wolfies. Let me know what you think!

It has been a while, but i have finished my SabreWolves!







It is nothing much, but i am finished with my schoolwork for this semester, so i might have a lot more time to paint up some stuff! I'll be finishing my ironguts soon, so be prepared for some big fellas!

These Sabre wolves are looking really good, nice work. Will be nice to see the guts too if you have more time for painting now.

Tadaa! I finished my BSB today, right before he will see his first battle. It took me a while to finish him but i am quite happy with how this bloke turned out.




 
I am not sure if i should give this dude some tattoo's. I like him this way. I might even do some highlighting and/or freehanding on his banners, but he is tabletop ready now. I have also been building some ogres;

These fellas are for my current 4-man bull unit, they will be with 6 now!


Ironguts! Nothing to say about these guys, they are my bunker. I coul'nt find a lot of chances to convert them, though 1 of the dudes (the bellower) has a nice hat and one stole his gear from a black orc (he is a wannabe maneater).




And some leadbelchers! I don't use them often, but i had to get some. What is not to love about an ogre wearing a cannon?


I might be able to find some more paintingtime this weekend, then ill start on some of my maneaters, so expect them soon!

All looking great so far. Looking forward to seeing some Maneaters; you can go wild with conversions on these guys!

All right! I finished my pirate maneater today! He is looking quite awsome, but it is getting a bit late, so expect some pictures tomorrow!

Another update! I had to wait for some paints, but i was able to do some touch-up jobs on my ogres! I love the new GeeDub paints!



The new blood-effect and rust paints are just awsome. The blades just look and feel much more rusty and the blood looks like fresh blood! I took this fella to the local club last week and they also loved him.


The BSB got his finishing touches too, he just looks dangerous now!

And i made myself a firebelly!!


He is not quite finished yet, but he will be soon. I'm thinking of replacing his flame (might need some flamey bits for that, anyone?) and loosing his cloak.

And the dude you have all been waiting for: The Pirate Maneater!



The main part does'nt look that great on the photos, but in a normal situation he looks absolutely AWSOME! I had lots of fun painting up this dude, it took me a while, but the result is worth the effort.

Should get your hands on some Tamiya clear red for realistic blood effects.  Makes a huge difference.

This maneater looks great. My only suggestion to really "seal the deal" with this guy is a little bit of flesh wash just to add some depth to the skin. The shading that it will add will really make this guy look the business.
It could be done on the brown and blue too.

The blood and rust look great, in fact the blood effect really stands out and has great depth to it. Whats next on your desk now these guys are almost done (i say almost because of the bases) ?

@Jimmy, I am using the GW blood for the blood god paint for that. It is too bad you cannot see the blood that well on the pictures, but it is really shiny.

@Gnoblar_Herder, i have followed your advice, the captain now has a nice tan!

1 piece of armour or weapon per wound, should be a lot easyer to keep track of 'em while playing at the club!
