Paints?

I'm recently getting back into the fantasy scene. I have a pretty sizable ogre tribe that have been neglected but I want to start finishing them up by giving them a nice paint job.
Which leads me to my question. I have been using citadel paints through the years but I want to be adventurous and branch out. What other (I know there are plenty) brands of miniature paints are there? Which ones would you recommend and why?

I use GW esp since they have extended their range. Having said that I also use Vallejo game and model colour as they have loads of varying shades and the "dropper" style bottles mean no waste.

My closest painting friend uses Vallejo air (for air brushes, obviously) and has some reaper paints that he has blagged from abroad (I have never seen them on sale in the UK).

All these paints are good, but in the end it is down to personal preference. My advice is buy a few pots and try them out and see which you prefer. No one sets out to make bad paints...if that makes sense.

I actually think having a good mix of ranges is the best approach, so that you have all colours, techniques and styles covered.

I have the entire GW range, which are great middle-of-the-road paints, but their washes exceed all others.

The Privateer Press P3 range are just wonderfully formulated, and great for getting a smooth, clean finish.

Vallejo are great for sheer quantity and depth of range.

I even use Tamiya, particularly their "Clear" range as a cheaper and more effective alternative to GW's "Technical" range.

I can only reiterate G_H's advice and try a couple from each range, and see how they work out for you

I mostly use GW paints because of the color range and because I started there.  I prefer P3 paints, however.  The mix and pigments are just really nice and smooth.  I do have a few bottles of Valejo Model color, and I hate them.  The paint rubs off too easily when I'm handling them while painting and it drive me crazy.

I exclusively use Vallejo Game Color now with the exception of GW washes (I tried different thinned downed paints, inks, etc., but those washes are just too good and convenient). I had Citadel paints before their current range but learned to hate the paint pots. When Citadel started their new range I tried the metallics but gave them up after a couple pots turned into a strange fluffy substance. 

The thing you have to be careful about are Vallejo's metallics. When dry brushing, little flakes of whatever makes that type of paint get flicked around. Because of this you have to either plan your drybrushing ahead or mask off areas. I learned this after some ogres I painted looked like they were wearing glitter make-up. Luckily, it was just over a base coat.

I've got the whole Citadel range, after buying the paint set with all the paints. I've tried a few others like Vallejo, but it really comes down to preference. I like to mix and match paints, as if I like how a paint from one range works then I'll get some of it to use. The GW range is good, despite there being some really weird versions like the base layer green not actually covering that well...

The GW shades are really good though!

I use the Wargames Foundry paint triad system. Each colour has 3 pots for base, main and highlights. Saves any mixing dilemmas.
