A Tyrant and a Slaughtermaster at 2400?

original thread ↗

Does anyone have any thoughts on a Tyrant and Slaughtermaster at 2400?
Once you add the (semi) obligatory level 4, Sickle, 2 great weapons, you are down to 33pts for goodies to sit in your 25%.
Can I trust WS6, T5 and W5 to keep my tyrant alive, and give him the trickster shard to slapdown who he fights?
Or does he need a ward, even a 5++?
Maybe the glittering scales?
Or are they ok without the extra 33pts?
Remove the sickle, add the dispel scroll. That gives you 58pts
Great weapons make Great weapons.
NEVER YIELD!
Tyrant + Heavy Armour + Enchanted Shield + Dragonbane Gem + Sword of Striking = 240
SM + Level 4 + Grut's Sickle + Dragonhelm + GW + Ironcurse Icon = 360
Total = 600 (25% of allowance fully used)

Pros
If put in the same unit (or if "bubbled" Trollguts is cast successfully each turn) both guys will have Regeneration 4+ and a 2+ save against flaming attacks.

The SM is pretty much guaranteed Trollguts as (a) There is 4 in 6 chance of selecting the spell directly and (b) there is a very high chance of rolling at least one "double" when rolling four dice. The rules state that:
"Any spell can be swapped for the signature spell" and you can "replace the duplicate spell with another from the same Lore".

You can therefore swap 2 spells you don't want for the signature spell and Trollguts.

With Grut's Sickle, the SM is pretty much guaranteed +7 to all spells cast, so is pretty certain to successfully cast Trollguts.

The Tyrant has a 3+ armour save and hits all RnF on 2+ or 3+

Cons
Unlike the talisman of protection (4+ ward save), you have no protection against the "heroic killing blow".

It is possible for Trollguts to be dispelled or not successfully cast.

It is possible to role snake eyes and the SM be killed by the rest of the unit.

Putting BOTH the SM and Tyrant in the same unit is sure to draw a lot of enemy attention as a lot of points are invested in one unit.

Even if you pop both characters in a unit of Ironguts with the Standard of Discipline, it is possible to  break tests EVEN with LD 10.

Extra
If you also have a L1/L2 Beasts Butcher in your army who knows the signature spell AND you successfully cast it, then the Tyrant will be S6 T6 and the SM will be S5 and T6.
Don't be too sure of always rolling Trollguts. It's unlikely, but I have had a few games where I've not had Trollguts or Toothcracker, and that has had a noticeable impact on my magic phases.

Might be worth giving the Slaughtermaster Fencer Blades and Dispel scroll and leaving him with that (and level 4 of course). WS10 is a nice defence and keeps his points down. Glittering Scales is cheaper if you need to go there.
Badmarsh's Tyrant could then be given one or two more goodies.

Still, I think you may be pushing it at this points cost, and I'm still wary about what benefits a Tyrant could actually provide. You may not be able to take a level 1/2 since you'll probably want a BSB too.

That's kind of another thing with Ogres - there's 4 Arcane Items that're really worth it for me, and that's Dispel Scroll, Earthing Rod, Hellheart and Grut's sickle, in that order of importance for me personally. I understand yours may be different, but I really can't see life without a scroll. So I find it hard rocking with one wizard in an army, and that's why I'm always wary about Tyrants. So take my opinion with a pinch of salt, cos I am a bit biased that way.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
IF you go for both a SM and a tyrant you will be spending a lot of points in characters, so you may as well focus on character boosting - eg. lore of beast.

But points will be a very limiting factor, so you cannot get it all. You will be forced to skip either: lvl4, killing power, defense. All of the above hurts but can be overcome.

I have previously gone for:

lvl3 beast, gw (261 pt?)
tyrant, fencers, glittering robe and the '+1S, 6++ remove magic levels on hit-talisman'. I recall that is 310 pt and he is a deamon prince slayer too (I tooled him for a WoC game - the bigname +1S is better and cheaper to get the 6A S6 attacks)
As you can see it is not perfect but the tyrant is hit on 5/6+ and any boost to toughness or regen will help out.

For heroes go for BSB (4++, gw), butcher logm-tax+dispel and an additional bruiser (4++, gw) or another beast wizard to get more juicy boost spells.

Squeeze all characters in a 10+ ogre unit 4 wide and enjoy a wall of T5 and lots of S6 attack. The bruiser all have 4++ and wont die fast. Bubble cast the boost spells from beast and watch how the unit wreck the battle field.
You will even have core points for irongut and about 600 pt for MFS and/or ironblasters.

Possible, but I dont think its practical at 2400.
2+ 4++ GW Lv4 SM for me :)
Alternatively, Skrag.

He's pretty much a Tyrant and Slaughtermaster combined.

I run both at 2500 and I don't think I use more than 600 points so it would work at 2400.  I'm a big fan. Expensive but you get some real crushin power!
I like the Idea of both at 2400
Tyrant fencers blades, glittering scales, other tricksters shard, Giant breaker
SM lvl3,Relic sword,Channeling staff, ward of protection maw lore

Lots of compromise I Know.  Tyrant in with Bulls.
SM in with Guts standard discipline.

Bruiser BSB Rune Maw
2 Butchers 1 beast 1 Maw items to taste.

Just my thoughts.

I have played with SM alone it feels like playing while wearing a shoe that's not quite the right fit.
