Redarmy27's - Ogre Army!

Hey guys,

It's been while since I've been able to actually build an army and get some games in.  I started while in college and primarily focused on painting and the hobby side of the game.  I've played as High Elves, Dark Elves, and Warriors of Chaos.  I had a blast, but my local meta became incredibly competitive and too rude for my liking.

From there, I went and continued to paint models and actually transferred over to painting 1/35 scale armor.  I love using my airbrushes and making things look as gritty and real as possible.

Recently, I met a great group of guys to play with and decided to pick up the hobby again and actually play.  I picked up an army I've always wanted to paint: Ogres!

So here's where we are so far....

Here is my stonehorn so far:

I'm trying to decide how I want to do the head of the lovely beastie.  I have quite the highlands theme going for the basing of the army.  I think it works quite well.

I have "three" mournfang for my army so far.  One is actually a conversion of a Carnosaur, which I mounted an ogre on to be the mournfang champ.  Who wouldn't want an ogre on a dinosaur?


It's all a work in progress.  To boot I have:

1 Tyrant
1 Slaughtermaster/butcher
1 Firebelly
8 Leadbelchers
12 Ogres
12 Ironguts
1 Giant
3 Mournfang
1 Leadblaster

And the list keeps on growing!

Thanks! Regarding the LOS stuff, I'll keep a backup just in case I have an opponent that is picky.  Otherwise, I'm going to have some fun with him!

I wonder if I could fit the Archanok model in there somewhere.....haha.

I could see it being used as a thundertusk, just build it with the web launcher and gnoblars crewing it and an ogre at the helm.

That Stonehorn.. it looks so real! And with so stunning real-looking base it is just stunning. Thank you! That is really something I'm waiting to see completed. Have a gnoblar to keep you motivated!

That carnosaur is one cool idea and I wouldn't mind playing against it.

I'll be more than happy to share the recipe on him once I'm home and am able to name the paints off easily.

Here is my "recipe" for my Stonehorn's fur, keeping in mind I use an airbrush:

Prime black
Do a "highlighting" coat of white to bring out shadows and highlights
Do a basecoat of Vallejo Model Color Flat Earth
Bring out the shadows with Vallejo Model Air Black Brown
Bring up the highlights with Vallejo Model Air Green Brown
Do the utmost highlights with Vallejo Model Air Light Brown

Once the colors are dry, I then take Windsor & Netwon Brown and mix is with a thinner.  This creates a wonderful wash.  I apply it liberally to the model.  Once it's dry, I take a bleached bone and lightly drybrush.

^ this is cool, although I've never heard of the Windsor and Newton thing your using as a wash....but the stonehorn is so good, I may source it and give this formula a try. It does look really good.

Thanks!  It's a trick I learned while working on tanks.  It's a bit like using the GW washes, but this has a better flow factor and doesn't "clump" as much as the GW washes do.

Here's an example of how subtle it works....

Before wash:


After washes:


They work just enough to make details pop, but not enough to kill the whole thing!  It's a win-win!

Now I'm convinced! That tank looks awesome, just the right kind of weathered. I shall be hunting down some of this paint and give this wash a try. Excellent work.

Well after a longtime coming, I have finally finished this animal.  Being my third armor piece, I'm pretty happy to how it turned out.  I can see some areas that I need to improve upon, but there's always my next build to push even further with.

All it is, is the piece of the saddle/mammoth back from the Thundertusk.  It fits quite nicely actually!
