When to use unit fillers

I have been looking at a bunch of the various project logs both here and on warseer, and I see people building unit fillers for other armies.  I have not seen much in the way of unit fillers for ogres (not counting gnoblars, of course).

How many ogre players use unit fillers?  Is there a certain point value or unit size that you feel is worth using a unit filler?  I definitely get doing it for single wound armies (my regular opponent plays HE and skaven), but since it is so easy to fill up a unit with ogres, is it really that useful for us?

I like the idea of unit fillers - especially for those units that just wont rank up like OnG Black orcs or when painting 100+ goblins... every model you dont have to paint is time saved for better things ; )

However a unit filler should be done properly! Dont just fill in a tree and call it a day : ) Skaven rank up (too) neatly for the IOB models so here a unit filer is hard to make without breaking the ranks sadly. It takes consideration and as a rule of thumb a good unit filler should take the same amount of time to make as the models are save : P

For ogres I have not been able to figure out proper unit fillers (also I dont think I need to) as a unit of 6-8 models is hard to fill properly without creating a void in the rank. So far my best attempt was a broken down canon for my lead belchers - I recall it was a bfsp dwarf cannon - fits a 40x40 base : )

It's useful as a fun hobby element for sure, but it is hard to make it look right with Ogres due to their size. Now, Gnoblars... easy! Just one dead Chaos Warrior with the triumphant Chaos Warrior Gnoblar stood atop him victoriously (I love that guy).

I've wanted to do a pet Gorger for my maneaters, maybe put two 40x40 bases together, give him a food dish, little gorger house and a collar...

But its hard to do unit filler for Ogres, small model count and already on 40x40 bases, so it gets weird to get much larger bases in

I received an extra 40mm base with the Leadies I bought recently so my plan is to take 2-3 gonbbies off those sprues and make a filler for the gnoblars. Problem is I rarely run gnoblars as it is and when I do its never enough to justify unit fillers, but it should look good when they're all ranked up on a shelf

I've certainly used them in my High Elves and Tomb King armies but I don't find a need for the Ogres at all.  Maybe in a horde unit but even then to paint a unit filler takes about as much time as an Ogre so its much of a muchness.  Still there are some really cool looking ones out there and are very pleasing to look at.

I have seen only one Ogre unit filler so far (non Gnoblar). That one was a Ogre catching a cannon ball and dragged backwards upon impact. Its size was 80x40, so 2 models. It was made more out of a sculpting interest than saving troops.

Other than that I don't think they are helping much when playing Ogres. My Dark Elf army contains several unit fillers though to save rank and file troops.

That's actually very nice idea!! 

I have thought about unit fillers, cause I like the idea of those, making formations more interesting/dynamic/scenic/epic! I guess one could say I like unit fillers that have even some "meaning". Putting a rock on a 80mmx80mm base inside a gnoblar unit would be just plain lame/cheap..

But yeah, why I don't have unit fillers for ogres? Well I haven't had any nice ideas, like canon ball hitting an ogre!! And I still have ogre bodies unassembled 'cause our battalion box is so sweet.

I've been working on some unit fillers for my 50 man Gnoblar units; the problem is that I want them on 100mm x 20mm bases, so when you plan them out you have to test each position to make sure they rank up properly!

Will post pics as soon as I take them and am happy with the results.

I made my filler today with the extra 40mm base. I used a gnoblar holding a barrel from the leadbelcher kit, a wheelbarrow from the dwarf miner kit and put the rack of ribs and a knife from the horntusk kit in it, beside it I put a few barrels and placed some more meat and supplies on it. I figure it works as a filler for darn near any unit in the army given our propensity to eating on the go
