OP or not

original thread ↗

Its great to be back, was out of the loop for a while, busy taking care of my 10 month old son (future gamer). Anyways, i started back after a long time since most in our gaming club turned to warmachines.

So i play the ogres in a horde formation and they seem to plow the road a lot and destroy units. Some complained that ogres are over powered. I would like to have some opinions on this manner.
Who will be the next Khan in the Ogre Kingdoms?

Ogres in horde formation is nasty if encountered head on, but its fairly easy for most armies to out maneuver or redirect/tarpit. They need to realize that they might not want to encounter the ogre horde head on and come up with a new plan. They might need more than a simple plan to beat you (...unless that simple plan is 'Cast purple sun'... that plan will work just fine)

Now, we're certainly not weak army at the moment but Ogres aren't overpowered in a pure gaming sense. Check the standings from most GTs and you'll see Ogres aren't winning every tournament (which you would expect if we were truly OP).

What I've encountered is people's playing style will tend to what they figure is OP.  I have a friend that plays HE and he loves playing me because we both are really good generals and we use different tactics, and we find ways to undo the other army before and during the game.

A lot of people that say that ogres are OP just sit there and cast wimpy magic missiles at our blocks and let us charge them and hope that we'll do minimal damage.  We are a team built to get into combat quick and do devastating amounts of damage.  Avoiding close combat with ogres or flanking them is how to win.  Most players, however, want us to just sit and get shot at for 4 turns before advancing.
The enemy of my enemy is my double enemy.

Gut magic:  The art of eating what nobody else wants to eat, just to see what happens.
The armies that aren't well designed tend to call us OP, but that's because we're the first army of 8th that was relatively well made, and we can win without particularly tweaked or broken list (WoC's flying MSU comes to mind). So since the average ogre list tends to perform well in a tournament, people see it as broken more easily.

Plus, losers just like to complain =P
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I wouldn't say the Ogres are OP because they have weaknesses.  Low Armour saves, Low Weapon Skill, Low initiative, low LD (outside of bubble) and susceptible to panic.

I don't necessarily agree that the way to beat an Ogre star is to flank it because I can guarantee that star will feature the crown of command.  I think each army will have it's own way to deal with it.  Mostly try to avoid the thing with chaffy units and use magic and war machines to whittle it down to managable levels or fight it with your best fighting block but have the fight on your turn when you can properly buff your unit.

+1 to this.  Some people complain about the High Elves deathstar with the banner of the world dragon, granted is a very strong build and cheap for what it does but its by no means unbeatable.

Every army has a strength ours(impact hits)offsets weakness(WS). Weakness Leadership, Strength lore of the maw(spine marrow). Initiative 2 oh well.   The key is usually in my opinion deployment. Our army is top tier now as more books come out I see us coming back to the pack.

The Delf unit that is strength 6 asf w/ great weapons reroll misses. Oh that's not over powered at all. I don't know of a weakness they have. I don't have a clue what you do about them other than cannons and running away.  High elves could handle them not us.

T3 with a 5 up on a 12 point model makes for one nice glass cannon, assuming you throw a unit in there that can take the hit, they shouldn't be too tough to bring the pain to. I saw a guy run a unit of 30 of them with a life mage at a tourney on the 30th, he ran into 35 regen plaguebearers and his strategy to survive became trying to force fleshstone through for 3 rounds of combat. On the 4th, oops he cascaded.

ASF and ASL cancel each other out, so no rerolls for the Executioners. They got Martial Prowess thoguh allowing them to reroll 1s when wounding. As LatteOkapi already mentioned they are Elves so T3, 5+ Armor, 12ppm and they are infantry making them supreme targets for all kind of templates. Even the Scraplauncher is deadly to them!
Do not confuse over-powered with simple to play.

An ogre horde army is simple to play. It provides a boat load of str 4/5/6 impact/regular attacks. You simply run up and charge everything. It's pretty easy to figure out who to cast your buffs on. Hmmm, do I cast trollguts on one of my ironblasters or horde of ogres? Opponents win if they can break it, or loose if they don't. It's pretty much the ultimate points denial list.

Although that particular one depends entirely on whether your army happens to be Demons of Chaos or not...

I feel no sympathy for Daemons of Chaos players as it is.  :)  They can get smashed.

I've grown into a seething hatred for khannons and BoN, the rest of the book I can live with... well not Caco Spam, that's evil too
