When fielding a six wide hoard with characters. What would be the best positions to place them? My lists keep seeing my general and bsb in a hoard. Should they hang to the edges of the formation, middle, or what? Also would they be better to be base to base or an ogre between them. Thank you in advance.

I don't run a horde, so no real first hand experience here, but I would in general say place them on the edges:
1) If your general is a slaughtermaster, his explosive detonations will hurt less of your models if he's hanging out on the corner
2) If you run your horde into a narrow frontage enemy unit, characters can always make way into combat (or stay the hell out, if that is more appropriate)
3) The edges are where its easiest to 'force' attacks at the only model in base to base contact, in the middle you'll maybe drop one rank, on the edges its possible to get 2 ranks that have to attack a character.
4) Similarly, a hole caused by an ongoing challenge blocks more attacks on the corners - while preventing none of yours
5) Tyrant models with dual weapons rank up better when they can shove their arms out to the side... stupid big arms thing
In general, you probably want the enemy to attack your characters, putting them in a clump or on the edges is best. Do remember the same tricks can be played against you, though, it may be frustrating for your general with a flaming weapon to have to bounce all his attacks of one of two enemy characters sitting on a corner with 2+ wards against fire.

If you tool them to survive, always with the champion so you play the wound denial card.

In general the wizards need to be in the corner so they cause minimum havoc if they miscast. You don't want any other non-wizards next to them in case of 7 result miscasts. Any more vulnerable character like a BSB also wants to be in the corner to help reduce enemy attacks. That said in a horde you might want him more centrally to spread the bubble more evenly.
So with a horde I'd put the SM on one corner and the BSB on the other.
