Hi guys, new Ogre in town!

original thread ↗

Hi there guys,

A little introduction.
I'm Peter, 23 years old, living in the Netherlands. Been playing WHFB for about a year and a half.
Always wanted to start playing Ogres from the beginning. But with the Island of Blood box on the market and some trading I did with a Skaven player I started playing the High Elves. As much as I like owning this army I'm planning on purchasing a second army.
So, time to start collecting Ogres finally!

I already own the armybook so I made a rough list of the thinks I like to use and buy:
-Slaughtermaster
-Bruiser (for converting a BSB)
-2 boxes of Mournfangs (4 models in total)
-Ironblaster
-Fenrisian wolfpack (5 models to stand in as Sabretusks)
-2 battalion boxes (Using the bulls to make more Iron Guts and 4Maneaters with brace of pistols from the mournfang boxes.)

I imagine my 2400 point list to look something like this:
-Slaughtermaster LVL4, additional hand weapon ---287
-Bruiser BSB, Heavy Armour, Ironfist ---138

-10 Iron guts, FC, Lookout Gnoblar ---465
-4 Bulls, Musician, Ironfists ---138
-10 Gnoblars, trappers ---50

-4 Leadbelchers ---172
-4 Leadbelchers ---172
-4 Mournfang cav. Heavy Armour, Ironfists ---280 (no need for command right?)
-4 Maneaters, Brace of pistols, Scouts ---248 (don't know what 2nd ability to choose, maybe stubborn?)
-3 Lone sabretusks ---63

-Ironblaster ---170

TOTAL: 2183

Not sure what to do yet with magic equipment and big names.

When using this list I'm also using everything I purchased. Only things not included in the list are 6 bulls/ironguts left from the battalion, 2 "Sabretusks" from the fenrisian wolf box and the rest of random gnoblars.

Hope I didn't make any big mistakes making my first Ogre list
If you have any critic, ideas, etc. I would really like to hear from you  :)

Thanks in advance!
Peter
Things look pretty good here. For someone who just started ogres you seemed to pick up on the biggest and best bits the ogres have to offer.

As far as advice goes there are several builds for heroes on the site if you look around a bit and some advice better then I could give also. What I do see is a couple minor things.
Maybe add a butcher to your list, doesn't have to be decked out but lets you have access to different lores

Add a few more bodies to your core. Maybe just one more box. Personally I'd say normal ogres but it's really the players choice

A second ironblasters is gold. Great for hunting monsters and big units and should need be they are still chariots so they ca me always help in combat.

Finally add some command to some units, bellowers to the leadbelchers, standard and musician to mournfang (no champion because he'd just get pulled into a challenge.

Other then that you're ready to go . Just explore the site and you'll see the ins and outs of the ogres and what they have to offer
A fearless warrior is a damn fool but also a welcomed sight on any battlefield
Depending on how tight you are on WYSIWYG... I'd convert more ogres into man eaters : ) Its a cheapy and the man eaters add so much to the army. You can field the classic poison/snipers or scout/stubborn (or whatever you like). Letting your opponent know you may have scout is awesome : )

Cheers and welcome.

I'd give your Slaughtermaster the Armor of Destiny and an Ironfist instead of the XHW.

That will give him a 4+ armor and 4+ ward, solid saves on top of his insane stats.

Then you can give him some stuff to buff your troops. Crown of Command is always good(gives him Stubborn)

Crown of Command, Armor of Destiny, and Channeling Staff. Add a 5 point magic weapon(maybe the Biting Blade) and you've got a pretty solid buff caster to sling those tasty Maw spells about.

With my BSB I always give him HA, Ironfist, Dragonhelm, and the Sword of Anti-heroes. 3+ armor, 2+ fire ward, and he gets +1str and +1attack per enemy character in base contact with him and his unit. Maybe tack on the seed of Rebirth or Ironcurse Icon with the leftover points.

I'd also try to get a Butcher in the list as well. Give him Heavens and either the Dispel Scroll or Hellheart.

When rolling for his spells, you will usually swap out whatever you roll for Iceshard blizzard, but Harmonic Convergence, Curse of the Midnight Wind, and Comet are also worth considering.

Your Mournfangs should have a Musician and a Banner(with the Dragonhide Banner)

It takes them from good to amazing. Musician is for the free reforms, win ties in combat, and extra ld to rally.

The Dragonhide banner synergizes so well with them. On a turn they charge, they get to reroll to hit, wound, and save rolls of 1. With 2+ armor that's basically a straight reroll, and most of their failed wound rolls as well.

It also comes with a breath weapon that debuffs what it hits.

Sorry for errors with the lenguaje.
I advise that you choose the units as more like you. All are valid for my.

But for my, the best units to play are: SM, BSB, panzafuegos, butcher, basic units, sabretusks, mournfangs, ironblasters and maneaters. And maybe the leadbelchers also.

For my the number of units and size, as well as the equipment of the characters is a matter of tastes and strategies.

Best regards and you have chosen best warhammer army.
A friend of mine advised me to take the fencers blades and the glittering scales for the SM, should be a powerful build. Also thought about using the crown of command on the bsb.
Furthermore I should convert a butcher as a scroll caddy, imo beast lore would be quite good. Should give him a dispel scroll.

Also dragonbanner on the mournfang sounds like a great idea!

Tommorow I'm gonna make some time to sit down and make a better, touched up 2400point list.
I'll create a new topic for it in the Armylist section. I'll provide a link when I'm done.

Depending on where the Mournfang are in relation to the BSB, the Gleaming Pennant might be a better Standard choice. I've lost units before from panic tests, and it really hits your plans hard to see an expensive unit run around in circles.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I look at it this way.

If my Mournfangs have failed a panic test, they've probably taken major casualties and aren't much use for me anymore.

Besides, if you give them a Musician they're effectively ld8 to rally which is pretty good odds. I'd rather save that valuable banner slot to improve their damage output.

All it takes is one nearby Sabretusk imploded, or another Sabretusk to free through them, or 25% of the unit gone. Those Mournfang are 4 strong, so if one dies they could go, and that's a valuable unit gone.

Plus, Gleaming Pennant is cheaper than the Dragonhide Banner, and could save your bacon. The Dragonhide Banner is a bit 'Win More' I feel. Plus, you could give that Banner to the Ironguts, who'd get some good use out of the re-rolls and ASL aura.

Both good points imo. Shall try out both a few games. Also it it worth considering to leave te mournfang inside the bsb bubble? That would pretty much solve the fleeing mournfang problem...
Well, it depends how your army is laid out to be honest. You do have a lot of units at 4 strong, which means it's only one model down for a panic test, that's the thing. But then I fail an unnatural amount at panic tests, so take my paranoia with a pinch of salt.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
Isn't the fact that only one model has to go a good reason for running the Mournfang Cavalry as a unit of 3 models? So two have to go before any test? Running two units of three is what I was thinking of doing.
Actually that doesnt change anything. Losing 1 out of 3 models is 33% so you have to test anyway. At 5 models you need to lose 2 in order to test.
Thanks for that I thought it was 25% - still reading the rules  :D
It's also why people never run Sabretusks in units higher than 1 (unless a Hunter is involved). Since they're Ld4 and can't get the BSB/General benefits, any panic test is them pretty much gone. So it doesn't really matter if you're 1 strong or 4 strong, one model dead and the unit's a goner.
