Terrain, Ogres, Procrastination (Warrior of Khorne, Warband Pics 4/27/2014)

So I decided to transfer my OK terrain project here, seeing as it seems like a perfect excuse to start a gnoblog.
To get started, I'll throw out some wip pics of my maw pit, although I'm likely going to just scrap this one and start again, as I'm modelling it after the tutorial in WD 301, and I'm not satisfied with the resemblance.

...although I'm likely going to just scrap this one and start again, as I'm modelling it after the tutorial in WD 301, and I'm not satisfied with the resemblance.

You could make a few modifications and turn it into a large hut of sorts, eh?

I was positively surprised to see the size of the pit. Much bigger than expected and even if you put it on hold, it could be a nice later addition as an old volcano/crater.

Are you going for some overall theme or color scheme in the work?.. eg. like greyish wasteland.

I plan to start work on the newer version tonight. My main reason for dumping this one is the fact that ogres like to stand around the edge of the maw pit to watch. My edges are WAY to small for an ogre to stand on.
As for my theme, I was planning on making it snowy. The mountains of mourn are snowy, winter is my favorite season, so snow is pretty much essential for me.
I would use it as a volcano, but the person who made the chaos dwarf player already made one, which is somewhat annoying.
On a positive note, I finally found a store that sells hardboard/masonite, which is much better for terrain bases than foamcore is. I also hope to post a pic or two of my bsb conversion. (Yay actually ogre models!)

Painting the bsb this afternoon/night. If I get it done I'll post him. Banners though: tough to paint, since it's hard to emphasize the recesses because they're so broad. I'll give it a shot though.
I ordered a firebelly model last night. I'm looking forward to painting that fire.

You were asking in the original thread for undercoat ideas so I thought I would share what has worked for me recently.

'Gesso' available cheaply from any art store works as a good undercoat for terrain. Takes overnight to dry but is designed to take paint well and as it is generally and acrylic base it won't melt foam. You can then use craft acrylic paint with a large brush like you would normal paint. I think you should be able to spray over it too but I haven't tried.

Thanks, Motley, and welcome to the forum! If I can get out to the craft store tonight I'll see if they have Gesso but I also need to pick up some Lahmian Medium (I applied 'ardcoat to my bsb, thinking it would only protect the paint, but it made it shiny instead.

) Nonetheless, I will post pics of him tonight if I get him finished, shiny or no. I'm also working on a pair of sabretusks, so I might be able to get those done too. Oh, and some Black Orcs I painted for fun, just because I can...
The maw pit mark 2 is almost ready for basecoating, I just need to seal some cracks with spackle and add some sand. I don't think I have any atm, but my neighbor up the block is doing some landscaping so I figure I'll just run up there and snatch a bag of sand (He's got a pile almost 5 feet tall, I think he has enough)

Remember to bake the sand before use - Kills anything fungy that may be living inside : )

I'd thing you could even mix the sand into the gesso to save one step in the process....

Yep, in the oven. The primer should do it. but I am just cautious with stuff I pick up. There is always sh!tty stuff on sand so I'd bake it... 200 C for about an 30-60 min and you should be good... As long as you keep the stuff dry afterwards you should be fine but better safe than sorry desidering the effort you are putting into this : )

I think I'm set to prime once I add some sand.
Also, I'm almost done with the bsb (yeah I said that yesterday) but I got the lahmian medium, which worked amazingly well, there is not shine anymore. It also had an additional side effect of blurring the color transition on the skin, which is a very welcome side effect, since it makes the transition smoother and thus more natural.

IMO the stance doesn't look too awkward from the side, but I will most certainly post a side pic!

In addition, my store called and my Firebelly came in! Can't wait to start painting him, even if the fire looks quite tricky to get right.

Haven't posted in... (2 days) But I have progress to report. My maw pit is almost complete! All I gotta do is seal it and prime it and I'll be ready to paint!
The firebelly is proving to be the pain I imagined, though...

The maw pit has sand basing all over it, it has been sealed, primed (And it didn't give off lethal fumes!) The watered-down glue worked like a charm, with the primer on, the sand is as hard as rock! Tonight I will bring it to my FLGS to show the TO my progress, to see if he approves. Oh, and I'm almost done with the firebelly. All I need to do is do the straps and I think I'll be done.

The TO approves! I'm almost done painting the maw pit as well as the firebelly, but I've hit a problem with the former. I've drybrushed the whole thing in successivly lighter shades on gray, which looks great, but also quite bland to look at. What I'm saying is, what could I use for snow to spice this thing up, and where should I apply it so it looks realistic?

I like the Mawpit a lot, but as you said yourself, it could use something to add more interest into it. Like snow, blood, bodies, weaponary, torches or a pyre, crows, rats. Depends on how crowded you want to make this nice piece of terrain.

Tips for snow? There's a dozen snow basing topics on this forum and hundreds more if you try google, here is link to some ogrestronghold topics:

Thanks for the help! I have searched the interwebs pretty deeply and failed to find a tutorial that suited me. Most of them required a six or more ingredient mix with very particular portions.
That said, the GW thick snow method looks awesome, as it only requires 2 ingredients. But what really was bugging me was that I was unsure as to where to apply it to make it look realistic. But since then we've had a solid amount of snow around these parts, so I can just look outside for snow "physics". But any advice here would be just as appreciated.

Oh, and the Cannon on the Ironblaster is done, as is the rhinox, the carriage needs one more paint for its wood, and the Ogre's skin is done. It's almost done! Good thing too, the tourney I need it done for is on the 14th.

I see. As I said I have never tried doing snow basing, but I can always look pictures and think out loud.

If that makes any sense..

First thing that I notice when looking some snowy rocky pictures is. Remember to keep your Maw's slopes relatively clear of snow and add snow mostly on the top and bottom. Makes sense?

Second thing. If there is not much snow and the area does not have much trees or any plants, it will most likely be windy. And snow likes to fly with wind, which again will keep many rocky parts clear of snow and the snow will pile up somewhere not-so-windy place. This would actually mean that there should not be so much snow on top of your Mawpit either. And that the snow could more likely pile up in the foot of the Mawpit walls.

Third thing. Snow falls from the sky. This means it won't appear under any cover.

So trying to keep all these things in mind, I would probably end up doing something like this. (Sorry for using your picture, I can remove it if you like

)

The amount of snow inside the pit and at the entrance depends a bit on how much traffic there will be in your pit

Because the pit is like a bucket actually and it would probably "collect" a good amount of snow in it..

And if you want heavy snow. It is even more easy! Just cover everything else but the Mawpit walls in snow!

(This will of course make waste of all the drybrushing you did..)

Just some thoughts of mine, feel free to disagree.

No problem, by all means keep it there! This is actually quite helpful! I was thinking that the snow wouldn't match the rest of the Ogre Kingdoms terrain for this Saturday's tournament, but in hindsight, it wouldn't anyway. Most of the OK terrain being used mostly "dirt" flavored, in that those pieces have lots of brown and not a lot of blacks, whites, and greys. So I will probably do the heavy snow trick, since it's easy...

Oh which type of terrain? That's a tough one

All maybe?

Some Dwarven brewery, smith's cottage or some ruins covered in snow, would go nicely along with snowy/rocky themed ogre pieces. Maybe ogres had a nice feast on dwarven flesh.

Warriors of Chaos terrain: Some black/green and gold armor pieces and desolation is always nice to see

Honestly I don't know what kind of terrain I would make for WoC so this would be very very interesting to see!

Beastmen: Oh I love forests and druidism and that's exactly what beastmen bring to my mind.

Skaven: Well Skaven terrain could be interesting. Some wicked warpstone laboratory about to explode?

Orcs: This is not for me, I've seen too much of it

Everybody makes orc themed terrain always. And normally it will be just something like leather tents, huts, spikes and a watchtower.

Update time! Here are the first pics of the ancestor-statue to-be!

It was shaped from two pieces of polystyrene, which were glued together before a knife was used to cut the shapes to a desirable shape. I then sanded it with a sanding block. Once I manage to find my modelling putty I'll try and sculpt a face and beard onto the statue.

After a bit of a hiatus from this forum, due to the death of a family friend and intense workloads, I have returned (let the groaning commence)
Poor self-esteem aside, I really want to get this gnoblog back on track. In the near future, I hope to post pics of my Chaos Marauders Mordheim warband (functioning as a counts-as middenheimer warband, because the local campaign organizer is a total killjoy and only allows core warbands plus dwarves, brets, beastmen and greenskins (so no ogres

). I was gonna play O&G, but I was informed that half of the 20+ players in the league already play O&G. So I find myself coming to something I never thought i'd come to: playing regular humans.

Welcome back to the front line. Sorry about the bereavement man, stuff does come to try us.

On the subject of humans; I would actually be quite interested in seeing this force take shape. I have often considered doing a "man" build, but the other armies just so much cooler that I have always shifted away from the idea.
Maybe seeing another build will give me the kick in the butt I need to actually make a start on a Empire army.
Post away mate and lets see this build.

I'm back (again) This time for a while (hopefully). I was gone this time because I had to attend a wedding in Utah, and I did not trust any airline to keep any of my models safe. That said, I have been semi-busy, working on my budding WoC army (only have 20 Warriors, but I ordered an Avatars of War model for my Chaos Lord) But anyhow, Here's my list of projects, in rough priority:

1. Get my Mordheim warband painted, now it seems like a toss-up between Norse (Counts-as middenheimers, although there is an official norse warband

), and Dwarven Treasure Hunters.
2. Finish that friggin' waystone! If I can find the thing, at any rate...
3. Paint my Warriors of Khorne. I might even post a pic of my test model tonight. I really like the way he turned out.

EDIT: Maybe also use some unpainted ogres for Chaos Ogre conversions...
~~4. Find some thinner clipboard wood for future terrain projects, because the stuff I currently use is a bit thick and it warps considerably over time.~~
5. Build the Stonehorn I've had in a box for a couple weeks.

@G_H: Does Warriors of Chaos count as a "man" build?

@just-josh: Thanks! If you want to make your own terrain easy and fast, just follow a few easy steps:
1. Chop up some polystyrene.
2. Glue it to some clipboard wood.
3. Spray it with a 50-50 mix of water and Elmer's glue, and before the glue dries, sprinkle some sand on it.
4. Prime the stuff.
5. Paint the stuff grey, and you have rocks!

I adore Mordheim warbands. It's what got me into Fantasy in the first place instead of nasty old spacemen with guns, and my vote is for the Norse war band as I think that might be cooler for modelling prospects and conversions etc.

My second vote goes for warriors of chaos being painted.

There's definitely a chaos theme to my votes...

Update inbound tonight. Finished modelling the Norse warband and painted a couple warriors. I just need to get to my home computer so I can upload pics to photo bucket.

Those WoC really are nice rank and file models. A whole unit would look amazing I'm sure, I have never seen one IRL. Nobody at my FLGS plays WoC strangely enough

I've just got one paint left on my 1st batch of 5, so I'm well on my way to a full unit (I'm thinking no more than 30, since that would run 600 points with command options.)
My way stone came off its base so that needs to be re-glued.
I primed my marauders, and I am ready to wade into painting them tomorrow!
I decided to paint up those dwarves I mentioned too. As well, I found the thinner hardboard, so we can strike that off the to-do list!

(wow the sheer novelty of being halfway competent is making me giddy!)

Hello all,

After work I'm looking to get going on my second batch of 5 Warriors.
I also re-glued my way stone, so I can finish up painting that thing. Also, I should probably cut out its base, because right now the thing is glue to a 4' x 2' strip of hardboard, and that's a touch large for a terrain piece that's maybe 4" x 2".
I put some skin paint on a few of my marauders, but no other progress on them.
Let's hope tonight yields more progress than the last.
