Basic Tactics for a new Tyrant

original thread ↗

*Belches violently* Well, that was a mighty fine introductory feast you set out for me, but sooner or later, we must get down to business!

....*guffaws* Business that isn't food? I crack myself up. *leans back on a protesting chair*

I recently took over a tribe, consisting of 15 bulls, 4 leadbelchers and a thundertusk... While their tyrant was tasty, I am unsure of how to field my underlings against the local Darkly attired pointy ears that plague my territory, and indeed, in general. ((pun intended.))

Will my fellows help me out?
Dark Elves, joy...

Slaughtermaster! That is your next choice good sir. For the correct buffs can keep our guys lasting against all their bloody combatty murderousness, and you can't get much better than a bloke who can take it in the front lines too.

Thundertusk is definitely a good choice here - negating their re-rolls is HUGE, with ASL cancelling their ASF.

I'd personally consider getting another battallion, and using it to make more Ironguts than anything - you get 4 basic Irongut weapons, but the core bodies are the same as Bulls, so you can just outfit two of the bulls with the Irongut standard and Bellower, and have a 6 man squad ready to roll, as well as more Leadbelchers - whose shooting could really hurt Dark Elves. You can also convert yourself up some Ogre characters - Bruiser BSB, Butcher, Slaughtermaster... with some work you can do anything!

Mournfangs as well would give them serious problems, as they do most armies. 2 boxes of them is best, but also consider who else you're fighting - don't tailor yourself to one army too much.

Really though, outside of special characters it's hard to go wrong with Ogres. You have a healthy amount of Bulls, so some more Ironguts should help, and then you can round that lot off with whatever you fancy, really.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
Ah, I may have made a slight error... *backhands his memory gnoblar across the room... and the wall he hit.* I meant an Ironblaster, not a thundertusk.

I'm also looking for general tips on how to use Ogres as a force, but there seems to be no dedicated tactics forum...
As anyone can tell you, all you have to do is push your ogres forward and try not to drool on the table too much and you'll win.

But seriously

Generalized thoughts, you'll have to be more specific to get more ideas, dig through the threads here and you'll find useful stuff even if we don't have a dedicated forum for it

1) You want to get the charge, the impact hits are really helpful especially if you can get the ogre charge off - I deally, you want to combo charge
2) Our leadership sucks, get a BSB and try to manage a 9 somehow (either get a Tyrant on the field or the Slaughtermaster + banner of Discipline)
3) I suppose its possible for us to run a low magic army (hellheart + runemaw + dispel scroll = hilarity) but in general, Defensive buffs or Firebellies help us quite a bit.

I haven't seen the new Dark Elf book on the table yet, so I cannot provide much useful advice for them specifically
Welcome to he stronghold

As to your problem

Butcher or slaughtermaster will help with spells and their immunity to poison put witch elves at a disadvantage
Leadbeltchers will deal with any troops u don't feel comfortable fighting  ie executioners and blackguard. Str4+ap they get no save and you will cut them down like a buttery gnoblar roll

Bring a hell heart to the fight. Most likely you will be seeing 2 casters on their side

Other than that ironguts are strong enough to deal with anything else since dark elves lack anything past t5. Other than a dragon mount   If you need more help head to the thinling forum. I have a great write up for the dark elves new book and Ile be going into detail how best to counter some of their stuff

There are stickied threads at the top of feeding grounds page, one is a summary of different important threads that have been written, the other is a unit by unit, spell by spell analysis of the book. Good luck, I face the new delfs for the first time tomorrow, so I'll be reading Apothecary's post soon.
Game's the same, just got more fierce.
