Starting up Ogres

Hey everyone,

Just recently realized that I have troubles painting small miniatures but I wanted to get into Warhammer. A friend introduced me to Ogre Kingdoms and the models are just the right size. I was planning on starting with the starter box. Would this be a good idea? Also, is there anything I should be aware of when I buy my first models?

Ohhh I want to focus on an army supported by magic or led by a firebelly.

The battalion box is great, all the units in it are very viable and if you pick up a pack of 20mm bases you can actually squeeze out another unit - there's lots of Gnoblars in there which are supposed to decorate the bases of the big fellas. A Firebelly can serve as a solid general in small games, though as you scale things up you'll be looking at getting a Slaughtermaster if you like magic. So yup, battalion and a Firebelly is a really, really good start.

I started with Ogres just recently with a Firebelly, a Batallion Box and 2 Boxes of Mournfangs (not mandatory).

The Batallion Box is awesome! There are no useless miniatures in there and plenty of options. There are plenty of bits so I decided to get Ogres and Ironguts only out of the box. Two bodies I used to convert them to a BSB and a Slaughtermaster with some minor effort. Actually, I'm thinking to get another box soon.

You've chosen a great army and we are blessed with a very cool range of miniatures where the original models are great but you can also use your creativity and make awesome conversions.

For the battalion box, I have to agree with what has been said. It's a great box to buy. Also, since the 3 units share the same body (Ogres, Ironguts, Leadbelchers), it's easy to build the box the way you want if you look for bitz on EBay.

A Firebelly is a great general in low point games and many builds use 1 or 2 Firebellies at higher points so it's hard to go wrong if you buy that model. It's also a gorgeous model.

Otherwise, buy the book and read it to see how you want to play. We have really good internal balance with most units being very good with just a few choices being fluffy rather then competitive. Besides some Special Characters, you can play anything in the book.

The Ironblaster/Scraplauncher kit is probably one of the must have of this book (built as an Ironblaster most likely).

Don't be shy to ask other questions if you need some more advice but remember that you should first buy models you like the look of since you'll be spending a lot of time painting your fatties!

All of the above sounds very good! Yeah, I know I am not adding much to the topic, but if anything the guys who posted above me are not crazy ; )

So things to consider after getting a firebelly and a battalion (in no particular order):

A second firebelly (if you go for fire-based magic)
2x packs of mournfangs
Ironblaster
A second battalion
A pack of normal ogres (or the ones from the battalion) to convert Man eaters and characters (you will get bits from the mournfang boxes).
A pack of Sabretooth pack (Or equivalent: I used giant wolfs from the goblin wolf riders - they are cheap)

Without counting the points you should be able to make several good and hard lists.
