Being the Kingmakers but not the King

original thread ↗

I've been hearing alot about Orcs and Goblins and Warriors of Chaos winning tournies quite frequently while it has slowed down for ogres. Now in my personal experience those armies are an uphill struggle for us. It's no coincidence MFC fell out of favour with the rise of fanatics and armies of chariots. Now ogres are an insanely tough flexable army with loads going for them and with units that really scare people yet I don't see many ogres winning events.

So what would you say if I said we were the kingmakers, the final boss at the end of a level. That by turning up with ogres you impact who can win but because of some builds being really hard for us we simply won't win overall.

If there was a Warhammer sporting movie the bad guy who wants to use the prize money to turn YOUR gaming club into a carpark would be playing Ogres.
Really? Is this  really what we are talking about?
I agree. T3 armies cry deeply when they see ogres across the board. But Ogres are not favorites. Probably too fat.

Its the same with Dwarfs. They win lots of games, but struggle to get full points, so they never win tournaments.
Great weapons make Great weapons.
NEVER YIELD!

Fricking Chuck Norris...
*reaches for pizza*
Well, like in such movies, there's always a mountain to climb for the protagonist to defeat. Ogres, by and large, are not "protagonist" material, and make for an excellent (and quite literal) example of the 'obstacle mountain' to defeat or overcome.

Sure, the epic fight scene has the good guy taking a lot of beating, but in the end, they manage to outmaneuver/outwit their opponent into achieving victory. And again, literally and figuratively speaking, an Ogre would be easier to outmaneuver or outwit :P

Outside of the movie parallelism, honestly, I think it's that Ogres have been a major highlight of 8th edition in a lot of clubs/tourneys; as such, more exposure to Ogres has produced a more effectively experienced anti-Ogre battle plan for many armies. Simply put, they're used to battling Ogres, and have learned the best ways of countering/defeating them in most situations. We just have to step up our game and realize that we're no longer the shiny-new material (over a year now) and that people are used to our mainstay shenanigans.

aka NO MORE INTERNET EASYLISTS FOR US :O lol

New book WLD: 21/10/3 - Haven't kept up on this! Solid win, followed by a good training-game tie!

Ogres have adjusted the paradigm more than any army in the game, even 7th edition Daemons.  Hellheart, wide access to properly costed Monstrous Infantry, and broadening access to cannons all made huge changes in how other armies have been built.  There is also the MFC to consider.  People have reacted in the same way that they did to DoC, which is people are loading up on Ogre specific counters and adjusting how they play with the book in mind.  A fall off was inevitable, especially when 90% of the ogre playerbase runs the same basic list.

Thing is, it is still a strong book and I still believe that all other armies should be set at the same strength (and many have) as the Ogre army.  Win or lose, the army generally gives a fun game for those involved and is rarely a "I table you and lose nothing" kind of game that the current WoC netlist creates.  As the metagame evolves, I think that Ogres will be in a really solid place, where good players with well crafted/painted armies are always in the hunt for the top spot.  You can't ask for more than that out of a book, honestly.

Yeah, outside of the Hellheart I've rarely seen any complaints about OP Ogres. I find most people settle down after seeing the WS3 I2 kick in and throw combats horribly. There's nothing that really stands out as downright broken or overpowering.

I think it's also because Ogres are less 'Evil' or traditionally powerful. Vamps and High Elves always had that sort of rep, and DE and Demons did punch their way in hard. Ogres... always sort of sat around as a rather cool novelty army, and no-one was expecting them to come out on top.

Though, it was very nice when 8th began and the old Ogre book pretty much blossomed.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
