What, in your opinion, should I add to my army?

original thread ↗

greetings fellow Ogre players!

Now when the summer is drawing to an end, yeah I'm just a litle pessimistic, and the autumn is at our doorstep and my season for playing warhammer arrives, I am looking over my collection of ogres and wondering what I should add to it.

Me and my friends are discussing going up to and try some 2000 points games, and i would be grateful for some thoughts about what to add to my army to prepare myself for those matches, just in general, in our gaming group we got almost all factions wich we decide on the spot what teams we are playing, so there's a chance to meet anything.

Anyway, here's what i own now:

Core:

Ogres: 13

Irongutters: 10

Gnoblars: about 60

---------------------------------------------

Special:

Leadbelcher: 8

Sabretuskpack: 2

Mournfang: 4

-----------------------------------------

Rare:

Gnoblarscraplauncher: 1

Ironblaster: 1

-----------------------------------------------------

Lords / Heroes:

Bruiser / Tyrant: 1 (Only have one model wich i use for both, depending on game.)

Butcher / Slaughtermaster (Only have one model wich i use for both, depending on game.)

Hunter 1

Firebelly: 1

-----------------------------------------------------

So yeah, any thoughts on what you think I should add would be appreciated.

With best regards, oblivionens.
I'd suggest 5 options if I were in your position and in no particular order here they are:

1. Another Ironblaster. They can be pretty unreliable at times so having a second doubles your chances of success. It's not required, I only use one but if you want a slightly more competitive list then go for it.

2. Another Butcher / Slaughtermaster so you can experiment with Lores of Magic other than Maw and Fire. Maw & Beasts work VERY well together and Death is also a favorite for a lot of players.

3. Maneaters!! They are so incredibly versatile and can be really good fun to play, especially against other Ogre armies who have Mournfangs. 6-8 Is an optimal sized unit for most of the common builds they have. These guys like the BSB I'll mention below are so easy to kit bash based on the spare bits you have left over from various kits.

4. A Stonehorn or Thundertusk. Neither are particularly competitive however they are both a royal laugh to play with and can add lots of fun to your games. Plus it's always nice to have a center piece in the army.

5. A Bruiser who is dedicated to being a BSB, this is SO incredibly important to low Ld armies like Ogre's, it gives us a tonne of staying power with the ability to re-roll all Ld based tests. I'd make this guy a priority and then go with any of the above. The great thing with these guys is they are (like the previously mentioned Maneaters) really easy to kit bash as we get so many banner variants and spare bits and with a little imagination you can make a really cool looking Bruiser BSB.

That's my opinion however, any of the above would be a good place to go based on what you already have.
MasteroDisaster pretty much nailed it with his suggestions, but I'll add in my two cents as well.

1) Bruiser BSB. Ogres really need that Ld re-roll, plus this is the only unit in the game that can be equipped with the Rune Maw magic banner. If you want to try out a Gutstar list it helps out a lot, especially if you don't bring in some powerful casters and opt for a Tyrant rather than a Slaughtermaster. As mentioned before, making a BSB from bits is fairly straight-forward. All you need is a beefed up Ogre holding a huge big banner. There are lots of pictures online of scratch-built BSB's.

2) Another Firebelly. These guys are awesome. For their points they bring a lot to the table, and with their use of the Lore of Fire, they give us some good ranged damage potential. Trying to scratch-build one of these guys can be quite tricky, but again, the internet is your friend; lots of inspiration out their.

3) Another Ironblaster. They're a bit unreliable, but awesome nonetheless. Str10 cannon, Multiple wounds, can move and shoot, str10 grapeshot, re-roll bounce and can hold its own in close combat. There;s 170 points well spent. Having two of these can be considered cheesy, but you can just call it competitive :P

4) Another kitty or two. Sabertusks are amazing for the low price of 20 + 1 potato you can cause a lot of trouble to your opponent. Redirecting his units, moving lightning fast and just plainly getting in their way. I usually run three of these guys in a 2k list.

5) Another Slaughtermaster/Butcher. Playing around with the other magic lore can be really helpful. Each of the ones available to us is useful in some way or another, so experimenting with them will allow you to discover which one you think works best.

6) More Ogres or Ironguts. The later will allow you to run a pretty decent gutstar list.  Also you can try out a horde from time to time. Plus, you can never go wrong with more bulls. 8)

Alright, thanks guys.

So another Ironblaster, one more slaughtermaster, a BSB bruiser, a sabretusk pair, a pack of ogres and Ironguts and a Thundertusk.

Are there anything different between maneaters and ordinary ogres except the equipment?
Functionally? Not a whole lot. If you want to avoid confusion, though (something I encourage whenever possible), Maneaters will tend to have more outlandish and exotic gear, something easily accomplished by raiding the sprues of your friends' armies for spare bits.

More Ironguts. Need at least 1 more box of these bad boys!
Great weapons make Great weapons.
NEVER YIELD!
Thanks guys for your suggestions, placed my order today.

And I ordered pretty much everything I said in my last post except the Thundertusk ( will get that when I get my next paycheck ^^), and another ogre pack to make maneaters.

And I feel I have enough units to last until we go up to 3000 points. :)

So yeah, it feels great to be "finished" with an army, unit wise, first one for me.

So cheers everyone, and thanks once again. :)
