Should I start Ogre Kingdoms?

original thread ↗

Hi there, I just have a quick question for you Ogre players :D

I'm playing Wood Elves atm and I'm looking for something completely different so I can vary my games. Would you say Ogres are fun to play in this edition? From what I've understood they are quite powerfull aswell now so I won't have to deal with being underpowered to a huge degree, would you say that's true? I would quite like to play a more traditional game of warhammer where I don't rely on shooting and evading all game :D

I quite like the models that Ogres have, and I was thinking about giving them a wood theme. Something along the lines of "A traveling band of Ogres tried to enter the forest of Athel Loren but was beaten back by angry forest spirits and elves. Now they try to copy their tactics and employ "camouflage" (some leaves on their heads etc)"

Also, do you find that Ogre's tend to gravitate towards a single "Best" list, or is there room to experiment and do different stuff and still be strong? I kinda hate it when every single list turns out to be more or less the same ;)

Thanks for your input, I hate having to make these choices :D

EDIT: If this is in the wrong subforum, I apologize!
The cool thing about Ogres is that in spite a rather liited selection of models, they have a lot of diversity. Want to go all CC? Not a problem - high nr of attacks, high str, decent toughness, lots of extra attacks with impact hits and stomp, and do not forget allocation strategy and wound denial. Want to go all shooty? It's easy - leadbelchers, maneaters, ironblasters are not only good, they can fight as well as shoot.

Of course you have other options like lots of magic schools, dirt cheap chaff, sneaky play with gorgers and scouting maneaters, and decent monsters compared to a lot of other armies. I rank Oge core as some of the best in the game for the points, and who can deny how fast the army is to paint?
My hood is my castle...
I would definitely recommend you start playing Ogres, if not from a playstyle point of view, but from a themed list / conversion point of view...your "camoflage" theme sounds cool and will give you hours of pleasure creating an ogre list that is uniquely yours and different from the rest.

The ogres are a fun army to play and give you so many different options of playstyle so deffo give them a go  :)
Ogres are fun if you like movement and combat, that's their game. They are fast and hit hard but don't always grind very well vs large blocks. Coming from woodies it should be a nice change for you.

There are certain units generally considered to be suboptimal, but there's nothing especially weak in the book except for gnoblars, and even those can have their uses. As far a best lists go there are several styles that work well, horde deathstars, MMU, leadbelcher gunline. Any of them can be made to work.

As a bonus OK are probably the least expensive army to collect. Low model count and lots of bitz commonality means you can pick up a few battalions and as long as you have bodies you will have plenty of arms, etc. to finish them. Then of course you paint maybe 30 models and you have a completed army.

Ogres are very fun to play.  I have never gotten bored and I still come up with lists that I think are unique.

Their core is awesome.
Bulls - Better than most core, die to elites.
Ironguts - Crush most anything.
Gnoblars - Weak, but they're dirt cheep and their trapper upgrade has won me MANY games.  I always take 3 units of 10 with trappers.  It's 150 points and it REALLY messes up your opponent.

Special choices have a tone of variety and you can mix and match how you want.

The rares are also very good, but people tend towards ironblasters because they wreck anything big.  That doesn't mean you can't use the other stuff, it's just that the ironblasters are so awesome that people usually prioritize them.

Lords and Heros.  Some of the best in the game for their points.  The slaughtermaster is probably the best caster out their for his value.  They have access to one of the best lores out their, they heal themselves, and they have the ability to be heavy duty combat lords as well as mages.

Ogres are all around fun and they are very different from elves.  I say go for it.
The enemy of my enemy is my double enemy.

Gut magic:  The art of eating what nobody else wants to eat, just to see what happens.
There's no absolutely set 'best list' due to some of the amazing choices we can fit in Special in particular, but I'd be lying if I said builds didn't gravitate towards a few key elements. That said, there are very, very few outright bad units in the book - there are some that are outclassed by the competition, but there are some books out there that would really like even stuff like Yhetees, widely disregarded in favour of Maneaters and Mournfangs.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

Go with your gut.
Ogre Maneaters frequently look strangely dressed thanks to their experiences. There's bound to be a couple of Wood Elf based ones (I think there's a few online conversions) and I imagine some Ironblasters rocking giant bows would be a cool conversion.

Ogres can do a lot - the reason people tend to think otherwise is because a lot of people do run relatively basic lists, where it's just charge and smash. But you can do a lot - explore the Special Choices as much as possible. That's where the crazy lies.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
Surely the question should be why shouldn't you play Ogres?
