Tough break with the DE. At one time, not so long ago, I avoided playing them at all costs as they were virtually an "auto-win" army. By the time the second hydra was out the box my ogres were packed up and I was half way home!

Thankfully times have changed! Good luck with this weekend war. I hope the ogres represent for you.

Having had to play 4 hydra dark elves a few years ago I keenly recall the futility of trying to beat them at that time.

As you say, times have changed, they are no longer an auto-win, and I don't remember the last time I saw a Hydra on the board.

Well I don't usually post in my Gnoblog about armies other than my fledgling ogres but i had a great day yesterday with an unusual bretonnian list and thought I would share.

It was a three game tournament at GW: Aberdeen. 16 players on the day, and I managed to come 2nd (my best showing in any sort of tournament environment in years).

Here is what I had.

Bretonnian Lord with Virtue of Empathy and Holy Icon (So he is on foot and has magic res 3)
Level 4 Life Prophetess with Fozzriks Folding Fortress (For dwellers)
BSB with Empathy and Banner of Discipline (So also on foot and gives +1LD)
Level 1 Beasts Damsel with Prayer Icon (For wyssans and gives main unit the blessing)
Level 1 Beasts Damsel with Silver Mirror (wyssans scroll caddy)
200 Men at arms with Halberds and full command (To go in Folding fortress)
2 Trebuchets

2000 Points, three drops plus characters, everything bar the trebs sits in the fortress and I hope for a good treb shot or dwellers to win the game.

Game 1 was Battleline against a friends empire, he had 3 cannons, 2 steam tanks, a cavalry bus, 10 outriders and 10 handgunners.

First turn I dwellers the outriders, kill 5 but lose dwellers to the miscast (lost d3 wizard levels). Trebuchet fire kills the other 5 outriders. Over the next 5 turns I hide in my fortress while cannons blast me. I lose the trebuchets to a misfire and a charge from a lone character. Game ends up a draw when he realises  that firing his cannons/steam tanks is a futile exercise that would only result in handing me the game if her misfired and blew up.

Game 2 was blood and glory against skaven, I elect not to start in the fortress but instead deploy. Turn 1 I move forward and cast dwellers on hiis main unit of Seer on Bell with BSB and stormvermin. His general and BSB die and I win. This game lasted approximately 60 seconds. (Move, cast, roll strength test, win.)

Game 3 was a 40k style mission, battleline plus 5 stationary objectives worth 500 VP's each. I was against some chaos warriors of Tzeentch. I killed three skullcrushers, some dogs, a chariot and a hellcannon, losing only the prayer icon damsel in return. We each ended with two objectives, so i won by about 600 VP's.

Winner of the tourney was a beautiful skaven army. Really nice.

Turns out there is not a lot that will kill 200 men at arms with the blessing, magic res 3 and a fortress.  :D

I don't think I would do it again though. Too many odd rules queries come up with this style of list and I imagine it would get very dull very quickly.

It was a mega game. My 50 Man Gnoblar unit were stars, a couple of buffs on them and they are golden.

Just wondered what buffs you give the gnoblars.

The battle reports are really cool, haven't played a game with ogres yet so picking up some great tips :)

Thanks Ogre_Matt. Glad to be of service.

I find that if you can get the plus one toughness spell and the regeneration spell on the gnoblars at the same time then they are very very tough. 50 T4 dudes with essentially a 4 up ward as long as no-one sets fire to them.

In my experience so far, these are the two best spells in our lore anyway, cast on ogres they are very good spells, cast on gnoblars they will surprise people.

That sounds like a phenomenal tarpit unit. I suppose people are less likely to expect you to buff the gnoblars. And also possibly more likely to let it through worrying about other spells.
